Viseup+

ViseUp was established in March 2020 to address the pressing demand for protective equipment for front-line staff during COVID crisis. Focussing principally on the protective visor, ViseUp is a collaboration of businesses, schools and organisations around Scotland: The Innovation School at Kelvinside, SWG3, Loft Office, Badaboom, Clydeside Distillery, Hydro-C, City of Glasgow College, Intelligent Façade Engineering, Glasgow School of Art, NHS Scotland, Rock DCM, Urban Office Architects, Peter Drummond Architects, Larbert High School, Caldervale High. In a matter of weeks, ViseUp + scaled from 0 to 60, 000 units of PPE delivered to 800 separate healthcare settings across Scotland and the UK. We demonstrated how, in a fast-prototyping environment, creative solutions can be found to address pressing real-world needs, and in the process, showed that social value, learning and potential commercial opportunity can all productively co-exist. Through collaboration with partners in health, engineering and design, and harnessing agile design methodologies and processes, our aim with ViseUp + going forward is to continue developing products and solutions with social, ethical and commercial value. With the threat of COVID reduced and hopefully, in time, banished, we want our young people to join the story. Pre-COVID, there was already at the Innovation School a significant appetite for innovation and product development. To build on this passion, ViseUp + will be seeking partners across a range of sectors, from industry, science, arts and academia. With their input, students will be guided through a variety of product development projects from engineering to music technology, from aviation to EdTech, and from fashion to healthcare. In the process, ViseUp + aims to become a blueprint for how young people can learn the skills necessary for Industry 4. 0, and develop the habits of mind to succeed in an increasingly uncertain world.
