Whitehall Valais Blacknose Sheep And Belted Galloways, Scotland
About Whitehall Valais Blacknose Sheep And Belted Galloways, Scotland
We are very lucky to have been the first breeders of Valais Blacknose Sheep in the lowlands of Scotland. We have successfully breeding them since they first arrived in the UK in 2016.
Whitehall Valais Blacknose Sheep And Belted Galloways, Scotland Description
Valais Blacknose Sheep, or Walliser Schwarznasenschaf originate from the Valais region of Switzerland and are bred for both meat and wool. They are unmistakable with their black faces, ears and long spiral horns. They also have black patches on their knees, hocks and feet. The sheep are extremely friendly and seem to love us as much as we love them!
Valais Blacknose Sheep arrived in the UK for the first time in Spring 2014 and we were thrilled to start having then on our farm in December 2014.
We also farm Aberdeen Angus Cattle, Texel and mule sheep and our new venture is Belted Galloway Cattle.

And this is what they look like under all that fleece. They are very happy not picking up every bramble or nettle as they walk.
We had such a great time at Blacknose Beauties. No bell this year but the sheep graded really well, Fearn came 5th in the biggest class of 33 entries. Eno 4th, Evie 3rd in the Young Handlers. Our ewe lamb Esther was sold for 2600gns (4th highest ewe price). Supreme Champion was the exceptional Highland Eric, Reserve went to Westmorland Dilly. The Highland Flock also had the highest three prices in the sale, the highest being 10,000gns for Highland Egbert. I am therefore very glad that I went Sheep shopping in the Highlands earlier on this year! (Fearn is from the Highland Flock)
It’s show time! This is Esther who is up for sale tomorrow 😢
If you like the Belties, you can get a calendar of them from The Scottish Belted Galloway Society. Next year’s cover girl is our lovely Beltie Bridget and her calf.
It is two weeks until Blacknose Beauties and it will be the UK's largest ever gathering of Valais Blacknose Sheep with 191 sheep entered and 74 up for sale. We have people coming from NZ, USA, Belgium, Sweden and obviously Switzerland. The Swiss Society Judges will grade the sheep (as they do in Switzerland) on Friday afternoon, followed by a BBQ (tickets available on www.valaisblacknosesheepsociety.co.uk ). Prize giving, young handers and the sale will happen on Saturday. We have some great trade stands so it will be a great day out for all, we hope that you can come and join us.
Very pleased with Foxglove, the lamb we bred who we dropped of to her new home in Inverness in May. 1st in her Class and then Reserve Champion. She looks so sweet with her owner Donald too. Torrential rain didn’t dampen their spirits.
We have two ram lambs which will be for sale at Blacknose Beauties Emmanuel and Furi, we also have one ewe lamb (not pictured).
We were practicing getting our sheep clean for next months Blacknose Beauties Show. There will be almost 200 Valais Blacknose Sheep there so competition will be strong! We still can’t get fleece as white as we would like, but he looks a lot better!
Did anyone get a selfie with Elfie (or Fizz or Eldorado) at the Highland Show? If not, Elfie will be at Blacknose Beauties in Carlisle on 24th and 25th August ready for selfies!
Come and say hello and have a selfie with Elfie.
These lovely lambs are going to the Valais Blacknose Sheep Society Show in August, are you....? If you love these sheep, it is great place to see them.
We may have sold some lambs this week and sent them to their new homes but we also picked up a couple of new ones from the Highland VBN.
Today we dropped Foxglove off at her new home in Inverness, I think she will be very happy there and very loved. Other ewes and lambs are off to Wales and England over the next week, we will miss them all.
I have been selling this fantastic pottery featuring Valais Blacknose Sheep and we are very happy that they will have a stand at our Blacknose Beauties Show in Carlisle in August. They will be there on Saturday 25th but the show runs for two days from Friday 24th. It will be well worth a visit to see the best of the British Valais Blacknose Sheep.
