With the Season getting underway we caught up with Lucy McNulty as she looks forward to her first full season refereeing in the men’s leagues to see how she got involved and what her goals are..
How did your shinty career start off?
I first got into shinty when I was 4/5 years old watching my dad play. I was then old enough to play for a once popular Glenorchy kids team. From there I played with Glenorchy men's team for years and then carried on with women’s shinty, mostly re...cently with GMA and the Scotland team.
How did you get involved in refereeing to start with?
I thought about refereeing when I felt I had done all I could with my shinty career. I was aware that there was a shortage of referees within the sport. I enjoy a challenge and learning new skills so I thought I would get on the course and give it a bash! I passed the referees course which allowed me to become an official referee.
Are there any challenges in being a female referee in the men's game?
The biggest challenge I find in refereeing the men’s game is that it is very quick paced so you have to be on the ball and quick with your decision making. However from time to time you will get the odd player who seems to think that a female referee won’t pull them up for things. But to be honest most of the male players have been brilliant and very encouraging.
You've crossed over from playing to coaching and refereeing - how difficult was it to adapt?
The biggest adaptation I have had to make coming from playing to officiating is trying to keep an eye on the game as a whole. You can’t always get every call right and you can’t see everything but that’s refereeing and it is difficult. You want to keep everyone happy but it’s just not going to happen!
What are your goals for the future?
My future aspirations for refereeing are to try get more game experience under my belt. Due to work commitments it’s difficult to try get a Saturday off so I hope to get more experience, and by next season move up a league!
If you are inspired by Lucys story and fancy getting involved in refereeing you can get in touch with Stuart Reid - shintystu@hotmail.com or Graham Cormack - Graham.cormack@shinty.com for information on upcoming courses.
