Woolly Mammoth Fabrics Description

About Woolly Mammoth. . .

Woolly Mammoth specialises in bespoke, hand-woven soft furnishing products. All products are exclusively designed and made in the UK (Cardiff, Wales) and the local area. Our Limited Edition products are hand cut, sewn and woven.

The studio is lead by Emma Swinburne. Her designs are inspired by a combination of trend-led mood boards, photography and sketchbook drawings. Inspiration and ideas are often derived from places, seasons, travel and architecture.

A commission service is also available for commercial and domestic requests. Please contact us for commission enquiries.

Our philosophy…

As a small business, we are striving to be 'zero-waste', using sustainable resources to make minimal impact on the environment as possible. To help decrease yarn wastage and unnecessary off-cuts, we hand weave and hand sew our limited edition products to size - this allows complete control over the amount of wastage material produced.

Woolly Mammoth partners with local mills to weave select designs. Working with local mills helps to reduce our carbon footprint, enables a fully traceable weaving process and great friendships with our suppliers.

We use high quality sustainable natural wool to ensure textile longevity. Wool is renewable, biodegradable and has a natural resistance to dust-mite and bacteria - making it great for the environment and a perfect finishing touch to any home! At present, our designs are wool-based. As we continue to design and make new products we aim to translate designs into products which are fully biodegradable, using only the finest quality wool.

Our making process. . .

Limited edition, hand-woven designs are created in our Cardiff studio on a mechanical 24 shaft Dobby loom. Warps are calculated and wound by hand on a warping mill, the warp is then transferred onto the loom to be threaded up. Ancient weaving techniques are reinvented in contemporary colour palettes and geometric patterns, some of which use two warps that weave simultaneously to create durable fabric. Once the designs are handwoven, the fabric is then washed and sewn into products by hand in our studio. The use of carefully measured pattern templates minimise the amount of offcuts produced.

Woolly Mammoth also partners up with local mills to weave longer runs of select designs on industrial size looms.
