Technique coaching session in the gym with Ruth today, working on some new strength & conditioning movements to help her improve posture, control & power in her paddling. Being able to ‘self Coach’ is vital to her ability to reproduce the same technique- and so keep progressing -when I’m not around.

The start of a new year- or decade (!) - is a great time for goal setting, getting excited about all that is to come in the new year. But in a society where we’re used to instant download & next day delivery, achieving goals can be tough: progress takes time, and in some cases, lots of it. This is a great article with some tips to help you achieve those goals, whether they be fitness related, or getting better at kayaking. Enjoy...

First day of another long term program today, this time with a difference. Matt & I will be collaborating over the next two years to help Andrew develop the control & confidence he’s aiming for in dynamic water. Today served as a lovely way to set the scene before we get going in earnest next weekend.

This is an excellent little piece of film. A lot of paddlers struggle to understand how swell period, or wave period, affects how the sea state manifests itself: the longer the period, the more energy in the waves. Here, you can see two 3ft swell days, in the same place, turning the same piece of coastline into a very different proposition.

Falls of Lora in gentle mood today, for long term student Ruth, looking at angle, speed, and exploring the environment through play.

I recently wrote an article on a subject close to my paddling heart for the Scottish Canoe Association magazine, Scottish Paddler. However, many of you aren't in Scotland! So if you weren't able to read the paper version, here it is... https://www.zoenewsamcoaching.co.uk/blog/ we-do-it-for-flow

Would you like to feel in control in the surf zone in your sea kayak? Perhaps you've had a taste of how much fun surfing a sea kayak can be, and would like to learn more? Or maybe you'd just like to be able to look after yourself in the surf, launching & landing in style?
Matt & I will be running our Surf for Sea Kayakers courses again this winter, with a choice of dates & venues:
Moray Coast:... January 4/5 February 15/16
Lothian/ Fife Coast: March 7/8
Special Offer... Book both a Surf for Sea Kayakers course, and a Falls of Lora course, and receive a discount off the total cost!

Have you considered working towards the British Canoeing Personal Performance Awards? I've been thoroughly enjoying helping clients on their journey towards achieving them since their inception in January. I'm very pleased to now be able to deliver all levels of the Sea Kayak personal performance awards: the Sea Kayak Award, Coastal Sea Kayak Award, and Advanced Sea Kayak Award.
I'll be scheduling courses for all of these in 2020: watch this space, or get in touch for bespoke dates.
