Did you know? Our Museum was once a working chalk quarry, run by the Pepper family until its closure in the late 1960’s.

Our resident steam loco Peter has now retired for this season, he is in need of a service and boiler repairs before he can steam up and ride our narrow gauge rails for all our visitors to enjoy.
Whilst Peter is taking a rest and we continue to fundraise for his work to be carried out, we are pleased to announce that an old friend of ours Wendy, who is part of the Hampshire Narrow Gauge Trust collection has come to join us for our 2019 season.
So come along to our Museum in ...2019 to see Wendy and take a ride on our narrow gauge railway. Wendy will be in steam on selected weekends, more information on these dates will be available on our website ready for our opening on the 16th February.

Can you help us win a gift of play? If you visited our Museum this summer you would have seen the wonderful blue bricks we had on loan from Imagination Play.
Please visit their website and nominate our Museum for the chance to win our very own set to keep. This would be a wonderful addition to our new STEM activity programme in 2019. The entry deadline is the 31st December 2018.

Thank you to everyone who has visited our Museum over our Christmas weekends this December. We have had lots of festive fun despite the unpredictable British weather. Father Christmas is now waving goodbye, and looks forward to seeing you all again next year.
We are also waving goodbye to Peter our Bagnall Steam Locomotive, who is going out of service, as he is in need of a service and boiler repairs. We need your help raising £40,000 to have the work carried out to have... him back in steam on our railway. We have raised 25% of our target so far, but still have a long way to go.
Visit our just giving page to find out more and help support our fundraising project: www.justgiving.com/campaigns/charity/ambe rleymuseum/peter
Also, a big thank you to all our volunteers, who have braved the wet weather over the weekends to help make your visit to our Museum special.

Since the museum opened in 1978 every autumn historic vehicles have gathered at Amberley Museum.
Located in the heart of the South Downs national park, our museum is dedicated to preserving the industrial heritage of the South East. With 36 acres to explore and over 40 exhibits to visit, you can discover the South’s working past.
Exhibits include a working print shop, which is the only one of its kind in the South of England. The BT Connected Earth exhibit shows the hist...ory of communications, with interactive displays for all ages to enjoy. Our lime kilns are scheduled ancient monuments, which date back to when the site was once a working chalk quarry. The Life of Lime exhibition shows the history of the chalk quarry and its importance in Sussex’s industrial working past.
Our museum is also home to traditional crafts people such as the blacksmith. There is also a pottery on site, where our resident potters will showcase their skills on selected days.
We have our own narrow gauge railway, which you can ride and explore around the site, with many different locos from steam, electric and diesel. We also have a historic bus service which takes you on a ride within our 36 acre site.

User

Wonderful day out for young and old alike. Lots of things to see and do especially for those itchy fingers that love to touch bells and buttons normally out of bounds!

Someone made a comment that the choice of food in the cafe was limited but get real folks it's one of the few places these days where you can take you own picnic with plenty of areas to stop and eat(in the open or under cover)

The volunteers are happy and knowledgeable and always smiling . Great day !!

User

We had the most fun here, doing crafts, printing, riding on an old steam roller, sending telegrams and the best riding on the train. Ann the driver was wonderful and told us all about the engine and made it really special for my girls. Big thank you x

User

Today we went here as a family day out , my daughters aged 5 and 2 had a lovely day out and the highlight of there day was going around on the old bus. All the staff are so friendly and know so much about the things that are there and to teach the children how things are different from now and then. We will definitely be back again soon.

User

That we love the museum is nothing new to anyone but yesterday we were lucky to host my son's 5th birthday party there and it was AMAZING! The combination of handling artifacts, private birthday train and private bus and much more fantastic surprises was a major hit with all guests. Each and everyone adored it and will be returning.

Special thanks goes to Caroline for dealing with my enquire so professionally and excitement and for her great support before, during and after the party. Thanks to Nikki for running around with us ensuring the group was safe and together at all time. To David, Chris and Alan, our dedicated volunteers, thank you for your time, knowledge and passion for the museum - you have made the day extra special.

To anyone looking for a very special day for your son or daughter, we can't recommend it enough. Thank you to all and see you soon, for sure!

User

It was our first visit and what a wonderful find - so many interesting exhibits and wonderful friendly and hugely knowledgeable volunteer staff to make the day a fantastic experience. If I could improve one thing it would be the choice/range of food available, but what we did have was excellent value for money. Will definitely be returning as there is so much more to see that we didn’t have time to on this visit.

I've been going with granparennts and 3 year old daughter for a couple of years. They do a teddy bears picnic or themed picnic in August which is lovely. The vinyage cars day is as good as beauley. Weekends they usually have vintage buses and steam trains out, girls love as much as boys. The have traditional arts and crafts practiced and workshops. So much more, fun and learning for children. My 3 year old loves it, second home

User

Had a brilliant visit everyone was so friendly and helpful they love to chat about their particular subject, sad that the pottery was closed was looking forward to seeing that. It would be lovely for the youngsters to be able to see a bit more about life in the 20th century such as a fully equipped kitchen with all the gadgets only people 80 and over would have used. We will definitely be returning.

User

Great day out. Will be returning with my grandsons. Some of the electricals made me feel my age. So much to see and do. Would recommend this museum to all ages.

User

Fantastic place to come for a family day out. Friendly staff, reasonably priced restaurant and lots to keep a train and vehicle mad toddler amused. Thank you!

User

Fantastic day out for anyone interested in the history of technology and industry. Fascinating exhibits curated by people with an obvious love of what they do. Give it the whole day; you won't be disappointed.

User

Been there a few times now so much to see a fantastic place ,the restaurant is great and the smaller cafe is just as good and serve a fab cream tea and both are fantastic value

Will be back next year at there classic car show AAAAA+

User

An excellent day out and good value for your money. My grandchildren had a great day enjoyed doing a bit of wood turning, making themselves a small toy each, they also loved the telephone exchange section and calling eachother using the old phones.

The volunteers were all really pleasant and friendly and were happy to share their knowledge, all the children got a few keepsakes of their tries at Morse code and printing.

The cafe is okay and reasonably priced for cooked lunches although snacks aren't as good value, however there's plenty of space if you take a picnic.

I would certainly recommend it for a family day out but children between 7-12 would benefit the most, although there is something for everyone.

User
