VALENTINES, Real or tosh... As a Jeweller I’ve often wondered about the history behind Valentine’s Day. And through the wonder of Google I find that it’s one of the oldest celebrations we have!! One story is that it all started back in roman times when Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers and banned marriage. Valentine defied Claudius and married lovers in secret. But he was put to death and hence became a saint! Around A.D. 270 the Christian churc...h decided to place St. Valentine’s feast day in the middle of February to “Christianise” the pagan fertility celebration of Lupercalia. Which apparently was a bit of scandalous affair. It came into favour here in the UK in the middle ages with esteemed poets like Chaucer writing about it. It grew it popularity and by the 18th century, it was common for friends as well as lovers of all social classes to exchange small tokens of affection or handwritten notes. In a modern world it’s nice to show our love for at least one day a year isn’t it? To help your other half choose something special for you, you can use our “Wish List”.
