About Anaphylaxis – the facts

• Food allergy occurs when the body’s immune system reacts to an ingredient that is harmless to most people. The food that causes the response is known as an allergen.
• Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction - the extreme end of the allergic spectrum. Symptoms may include generalised flushing, difficulty in breathing and can result in cardiac arrest and death.
• Common causes of anaphylaxis include foods such as peanuts, tree nuts, sesame, fish, shellfish, dairy products and eggs. Non-food causes include wasp or bee stings, natural latex (rubber), penicillin or any other drug or injection.
• Acute, severe food allergy is thought to affect half a million people.
• Research suggests that around one in 70 children across the UK are allergic to peanuts. A House of Commons report in 2004 suggests that the figure may now be as high as one in 50 – a quarter of a million children.
• Allergic disorders affect all ages, both sexes and all social and ethnic groups in the UK.
• Disease frequencies of the more serious and systemic allergies, e. g. anaphylaxis, drug and food allergy, are increasing fast.
• Numbers of deaths due to allergy are difficult to assess. There is evidence that anaphylaxis causes some 10 to 20 deaths per year but many of these are not recorded as such on the death certificate.

We've been advocating to the Department of Health, the pharmaceutical industry and other key stakeholders how the supply constraints of adrenaline auto-injectors (AAIs) is affecting people in the UK. We're continuing to raise with them the need for people living with severe allergies to have access to AAIs and informing them about issues and queries that you are raising through our national helpline. We have received a statement from the Department of Health about the current situation, which is available on our website here http://ow.ly/7aOa30lfJ27

Very well informed on food allergies , however it is also important to highlight the risks of allergic reactions that medicinal and cosmetic products can produce eg aspirin, skincare products etc.

User

This organisation has been invaluable during growing up with multiple severe allergies for myself and my family. I remember having the Cyril the Squirrel book and going to some of the helpful workshops when younger. Amazing work! X

User

Spoke to a lovely lady yesterday on the helpline who gave us some great advice really helpful and hopefully were now going down the right road to get our son some help.

I’m a new member but been following the campaign for some time. Thank you #anaphylactic campaign for keeping me updated with the most recent update, giving me access to vital information which unfortunately NHS doesn’t provide. I attended today the anaphylactic conference in central London where I was given all the information I’ve been trying to get to for 11 years. All the staff are truly amazing.

User

I'm 15 years old and have been diagnosed with idiopathic anaphylaxis from 3 months old I have never found such a useful campaign that can help me explain to other to help them understand what anaphylaxis is and how serious it can be x

User

I was diagnosed with idiopathic anaphylaxis a little over 2 years ago. I am almost 30 and have been in and put of the emergency room more times than I can remember. People need to be more informed and with this organization we can do that.

User

I have had a bout of allergic reactions over the past ten months and we couldn’t figure it out. It was getting worse over the months. As an Indian, there’s always mustard in my food in very small quantities so I wrote off mustard until I recently had a HORRIBLE (and now that I look back possibly fatal) reaction to it. I found your article online and it really helped me identify it and test it further. So thank you for possibly saving my life.

User

I have been a member since my daughter was diagnosed with a severe peanut allergy in 2005. The Campaign are able to give lots of advice and information, helping to increase your knowledge and give you the confidence to challenge those that 'think' they know! As my daughter gets older we will tap into the workshops available which will help her to manage the allergy herself.

User

I am really glad that I found this campaign site. AC is helpful, resourceful and gives practical advice and reassurance to many organisations. I find the advice well researched and easy to follow. AC strives hard within the industry and the media and their staff are so helpful to deal with. Great work all - please keep it up.

User

Hi very very good page. I am a sufferer with a nut and seafood allergy and wanted to know how I take part in the research projects that they are doing to make people immune to allergens. Please can someone message me or comment back? Thanks

User

Have been a member most of my life and the campaign is great, gives great information and has helped me find food that's safe for me!

User

Cannot thank you enough for your invaluable, practical advice and support. Living with anaphylaxis can be extremely stressful amd emotional; knowing I can ring and speak to someone who both understands and sympathises makes everything more manageable

User

You are supposed to be the voice of the allergic community. You are supposed to help us and take a stand for us. But you do not. I am hugely disappointed.

User

Very disappointed and sad at a missed opportunity for a charity I would love to support but sadly I feel falls way below and makes some serious mistakes. I do a lot of charity fundraising for multiple charities but hard to support this, a charity that I seriously question what they do and the lack of support and campaigning for issues facing people with anaphylaxis.

User

Wish the Anaphylaxis Campaign supported and campaigned for people with peanut allergy. I am so disappointed in the Anaphylaxis Campaign for letting us down.

User

Very disappointed with AC . I am livid that you recently shared post regarding air travel, allowing a 'journalist' a platform to mock allergy parents and trivialise the risks of airborne anaphylaxis, to which I believe he knows nothing about. I am even more furious at how AC have reacted to complaints and comments surrounding this matter. Blame a temp ! No apologies ! Going against the core of your being is not doing you any favours !

User

Allergies do not always equal anaphylaxis - anaphylaxis is a rare reaction to an allergen. You can have allergies that are not life threatening in fact the majority of allergies are not life threatening. Based on all of the recent comments regarding a nut ban on aeroplanes even within the allergy community I would say there needs to be education.

I had allergies growing up and had to practice food avoidance, my son has anaphylaxis and has to practice food avoidance but there is a huge difference in the outcome of coming into contact with the allergen. I came into contact with my allergens frequently and I live on pins trying to make sure my son does not!

Some people within this 'community' seem like they are just about trying to win an argument and I despair what all this means for the world my child is growing up in. I try to stay relaxed and not keep him in a bubble but this is seemingly impossible when what is now abundantly clear is everyone is out for themselves. There is no supportive community as part of the anaphylaxis campaign, I get more support from the allergy groups I'm in on Facebook.

Having witnessed my children both fighting for their lives several times I just want an easy life and NEVER want to witness anaphylaxis again. Whatever can be done to make sufferers lives easier can only be a good thing in my book and if that means introducing a nut ban on aeroplanes then fantastic. It's the start for recognising that something dramatic needs to be done in the way the world views allergens and how things are managed in public.

And after that, I'm out, what's the point in following this page when I actually end up more stressed about my sons anaphylaxis - I certainly wouldn't ask anyone here for advice or support.
