Although worrying when your pet has to come in to us for surgery or treatment, be assured they might appreciate being in with us during this hot weather! We have lovely air conditioning units throughout the building. All the animals are enjoying the cool air in our kennel area.

Poppy came to us in May as an emergency. She was able to walk but very wobbly (ataxic) on her hind legs. She had an MRI scan and this showed she had extruded intervertebral discs in her lumbar spine. Intevertebral disc extrusion is a degenerative disc disease and it happens when a disc in the spine tears (or bulges) under the pressure of surrounding vertebrae. The extruded material causes compression of the spinal cord (and in Poppy's case some of this material was actually ...stuck to the spinal cord) and press on the nerves. This can cause pain, nerve damage and eventually paralysis.
Following surgery to remove this material from her spinal canal and decompress the spinal cord, Poppy recovered well. She was able to go home just a few days after her surgery.
Her owner has sent us this video of her out on a recent walk. As you can see, she's doing well and is very happy!

A message today from Tina's owner - 'Tina all well and into mischief again thanks to Angus and all his staff for their good work.'' Thank you Pam! It's lovely to hear about our patients. In referral practice, once the animal is signed off, we often don't get to know how they are.

Here's Harry, one of our night nurses dogs, enjoying cuddles with his physiotherapist (also one of our night nurses). Harry had neck pain and following an mri scan found to have an intervertebral disc protrusion (slipped disc) in his cervical spine. Angus Anderson operated on him and he very quickly felt much better. He came in for a check up today and was rolling on his back, wagging his tail and was back to being a happy boy!
We have two nurses at the practice who are veterinary physiotherapists. One is National Association of Veterinary Physiotherapists qualified and the other is Association for the Scientific Study for Veterinary and Animal Physiotherapy qualified. Both nurses also have their own businesses and can see clients outside of the practice too. Please contact the practice if you'd like more details.

We received a lovely message from a client yesterday (her message is below. Roscoe is a French Bulldog who had ruptured his cruciate ligament. This is the ligament within the stifle (knee) that helps to keep the joint stable. When the cruciate ligament is ruptured, or partially ruptured, the tibia is able to move forwards in front of the femur and the stifle feels unstable. He had a Tibial Plateau Levelling Osteotomy (TPLO) surgery. This involves cutting the tibia (shin ...bone) and rotating it to another angle - carefully measured prior to surgery - and then the bone is stabilised with plates and screws into this new position. Because of the new angle the joint feels stable and the tibia doesn't move forward.
"Rosco my French bulldog just wanted to say a massive thank you for operating on his back leg and allowing him to return to doing what he loves best!........running with his friends on the beach! He still has some recovery to go, but he is loving life again........thank you xxx"

Bella was referred to us by her local vets after she'd had a fall on the beach. She wasn't able to exercise for more than a few minutes, would become stiff on all her limbs and would lie down, not wanting to continue walking. Blood tests were taken and sent to the laboratory but the results for the particular conditions our vet, Miranda, was looking for were negative.
A diagnosis of Myasthenia Gravis (a neuromuscular disorder) was made following an injection of a myastheni...a gravis antidote. Myasthenia Gravis is usually an acquired condition and is caused by by a faulty immune system where it destroys the messenger to the nerves which control the muscles and the muscles are unable to contract properly, causing a weakness.
After Bella received the injection she quickly recovered and was able to continue walking normally. She will have medication similar to the injection she was initially given to help her with this illness and, as you can see in the photographs, she's back to enjoying the beach and licking salt off her nose!
