Are you looking for driving lessons? If you are then you need to research and do it early. Look for a driving instructor who's professional, qualified and is always updating their skills. Ask for a home visit before booking. Good driving instructors are very busy at the moment. That's good for us but bad for you. We turn away new starters every day because we can't fit anyone else in. Once you are booked in, don't be changing your bookings because we may not be able to acc...ommodate. You know when you're going to turn 17 so plan ahead. Book 3, 4, 5 or even 6 months in advance. Yes it's true, you'll always find an instructor at short notice but ask yourself why they aren't busy. Finally, don't book on price alone. I'm not happy taking a pay cut so please don't ask me to. Cheap and good aren't two words that go well together. Good luck, plan ahead, work hard and achieve your goals.

My mate passed her test after 20 hours. My dad passed his test after 10 hours.
Put 30 young pupils into a classroom for a lesson. The teacher will present the lesson, at the end of the lesson, not all of the pupils will attain the same level of understanding or grasp the concepts equally. Do we judge those pupils who take a little longer or need a little more help in grasping the concept or topic they are learning? Of course not. Everyone is an individual and learns at their... own pace. If you consider a running race of mixed abilities. The elite runners will pass the finish line quicker than those who come last, all will cover the same distance but some will take a little longer.
So when you learn to drive the formula is the same. You will learn at YOUR pace. In reality, the instructor can only facilitate learning at a pace that suits you. Please don’t try and compete with others when you learn to drive. It’s not a race and it’s important to grasp the basics that form the foundation for a lifetime of safe driving. I push people hard in the car, but how hard I push is based on how quick they learn.
Take your time. Get it right.

As well as being a qualified and approved DVSA driving instructor, I'm also a driving assessor / adviser at Hertfordshire Action on Disability. At HAD, we help many different people with either learning to drive, returning to driving, continuing and sometimes retiring from driving. Here's a short video about just a small part of what we do.

There is an often voiced opinion that elderly drivers should be retested due to their tendency to drive a bit slow, take longer to negotiate junctions etc. But here is a fact, when people are learning to drive, they do things slower in the car. They take longer to negotiate junctions and they are doubtful in busy situations. When a person gets older, many find their reaction times diminish, so the brain in an attempt to preserve their safety instinctively tells them to slow ...things down. There is a lesson to be learned here. Most accidents happen because the driver was going too fast to react to the situation. Don't depend on quick reactions to save you. Whilst you might get away with it a few times, you may get complacent and start depending on quick reactions too much. A car will always go quicker than you can think or react, so match its speed to a comfortable reaction time. Don't try to react as quick as it will go because it will always beat you!

You carry them for 9 months, you love and protect them and keep them from danger for 17 years. As driving instructors we want to make sure they stay safe for the rest of their lives. Learning to drive is the greatest responsibility a 17 year old takes on, please allow them to learn at a steady pace. We care about your children, we want them to be safe drivers, we can’t bring them back if they get it wrong, but we can do our best to teach them to keep themselves and others safe. Good instructors usually have a waiting list and are more expensive, there is a very good reason why.

As a Driving Instructor, there’s something that has always annoyed me. How old do you think your children are when they start learning to drive. Most of you will say 17. Wrong. It’s from the age of about 3 or 4. Yes that’s correct. They are your passengers. They often watch what you do, say and act. So they are forming attitudes about road safety from a very early age. Where are these attitudes coming from. When they are 17 you entrust them with us to help them pass their tes...t. BUT, it’s not just about passing their test. It’s about developing safe and careful drivers. Between the ages of 17 & 25 they are most vulnerable due to the brain not having matured fully. This age group make up a small percentage of the nations drivers but are involved in over 20% of the nations fatal RTC’s. The biggest killer of teenage girls in this country is probably their boyfriends driving. The majority of this is down to attitudes that are formed over many years from that young age. Yet a lot of parents are more concerned with the cost of lessons and how many their child will need. Many are not interested in the safety aspect of learning to drive. Just the cost. What price a life or lives. On average it cost around £1500 to learn to drive. For some it’s more and for some it’s less. So for that price you would like us to create safe and considerate drivers. And many of us do. I’m proud of my record. So let’s say we are talking about 40 hours on average. In that time apart from actually learning to drive correctly and safely, we also possibly have to try and change an attitude to risk that has built up over at least 10 years. This attitude generally comes from you. So the next time you drive too close to the vehicle in front. Do a dodgy overtake Exceed the speed limit Be an amber gambler Run a red light Start moaning and swearing about the driver in front. JUST THINK FOR A MOMENT. This behaviour and attitude is rubbing of on your child. And they will see it as normal behaviour. So please help us to help you children become safe drivers.

“What makes you most nervous about learning to drive?” Student: “Other drivers, because I know how annoyed they get with Learners" “How do you know they get annoyed?” “Whenever I’m in the car with anyone, they always get annoyed and curse Learners for going too slow" “What, you mean they get annoyed because the Learner doesn’t break the speed limit, or because it takes them longer to do things?”... “I suppose so” The phobia Learner drivers have about other drivers is put there long before they start learning to drive. As a driver, what you do, what you say, how you behave will have an impact on how a Learner driver takes to lessons.
Just one sort of conversation Instructors have every day. As instructors we have to control the nerves, keep them calm as they try to deal with situations, please be patient.
