Back Pain and niggles during Pregnancy is a common complaint our patients present with in clinic.
Pregnancy is a time of great emotion and also a time for great change too. Many women experience a joyful pregnancy without too many challenges, but for others this is simply not the case.
During pregnancy there are a huge number of postural and hormonal changes that your body goes through and these put a huge demand on your body. Normally your joints, muscles and ligaments will... all adapt as your body changes and your baby grows. Some people will however experience difficulties and pains during different stages. Many women will experience this in their lower back or pelvic areas. Studies have shown that between 50-80% of women can experience low back pain for example, and this is where an Osteopath may be able to help.
Osteopathy is both safe and effective as a treatment choice at any stage of pregnancy. Many women will attend the practice for help with back and pelvic girdle pain, others due to associated pregnancy symptoms like indigestion. Treatment will be appropriate to your stage of pregnancy and your osteopath will generally look to provide both hands-on treatment and provide you with self-help ideas too. This may involve the use of support belts, exercises and postural advice.
After birth, Osteopathic treatment can help you get back in to shape and ease tensions built up through pregnancy and whilst caring for your baby. An Osteopath can also assist to help your baby settle too!

If you are experiencing back pain whilst breast feeding, try these 5 simple tips from the team.
Back pain or neck and shoulder pain is a common complaint we hear from patients. Try these simple tips to see if they help ease those aches and niggles.
Keep your baby Close
... This may sound obvious, but keeping your baby as snug to you as possible, so that as much of their body is in contact with yours, makes a huge difference. This will lessen you having to lean and twist to meet them, thus reducing the strain.
Try different positions
Mix up your positions. Try a side-lying posture for night feeds so that you can rest up as much as possible too!
Make friends with pillows
Make sure your pillows are working for you. Are they supporting you along your whole back? Do they support your arms and your baby? Play around with pillows and invest in some different shapes and styles to see what works best for you.
Feet Flat
Keep your feet planted on the floor, so they are flat and supported. If you need to, put a box or a book under them to achieve this position. Your legs and body will relax more if your feet are flat.
Sit Bones
When sitting, can you feel your weight through your sit bones? Can you feel your weight evenly on both bum cheeks? If not, jiggle around until you feel an even weight through both sides. Sitting twisted or unevenly will put more strain on your back and pelvis.
Relax those Shoulders
When you are comfortable and baby is latched on, try and focus on your neck, shoulders and jaw. Are your shoulders relaxed or wrapped up around your ears? Breathe in and out as you try to relax. Many women experience pain at times with feeding and often have troubles getting babies to feed, all this can lead to tension, but things will get easier with time. Focus on your breathing and try to relax those shoulders down.
If you are still experiencing problems, call our team to speak with Gemma Radmall one of our Osteopathic Team at BOP. Don’t suffer in silence, call 01903 820206.

People often worry that as their pain is bad then the damage done must also be bad. This is so often not the case. Pain is a way of stopping us doing something or alerting us that something is not right, but it is often not a measure of the damage done. The key in understanding back pain and other painful conditions is understanding pain and what is causing the pain you are feeling. This is where an osteopath could help you. Osteopaths are trained to understand you as a perso...n and how you are functioning on all levels. They look to see what has disrupted normal function to create your pain. This could be a physical injury, a change of behaviour or routine or something else. They then look to address the cause and educate you to help yourself, with their help, back to You again. Medication can often help symptoms of pain, but will often not help the underlying cause of it. It has an important role, but not all the role for everyone. Speak to an osteopath about your pain and see if they can help you too. #osteopathy #pain #painmanagement #worthing #BOPOsteo #broadwaterosteopaths #sussex #backpain #sciatica
