*MAKER TAKEOVER* Cathy Timbrell @cathytimbrelljewellery : Day 4. Enamelling copper bowls. The first three pages (swipe) show a variety of effects you can get with just a few enamels. I tend to work with bright colours. You enamel the inside and outside separately. The copper can be protected by a layer of clear transparent flux for the first firing, giving a beautiful golden colour (third page) on top of which more enamels can be applied - re-firing each time. Unprotected cop...per oxidises to black copper oxide - which will interact with white opaque enamels to give wonderful effects of different colours, greens, pinks and turquoise. You can use the technique of sgraffito, scratching through one layer to expose the lower one to good effect as well. The bowls are first coated with a fine mist of dilute wallpaper paste and the enamel sifted on, evenly, dried on the kiln, then fired at 950 degrees C for 45 seconds - 2 minutes. I fire the bowls many times - complex ones up to 15 times, the simpler ones on the third page were about 5 times. Finally the bottom and rims of the bowls are cleaned to expose the copper, and the bases signed. *MAKER TAKEOVER * Cathy Timbrell @cathytimbrelljewellery: Keum boo is an old Korean method for adding a thin layer of pure gold to metal - in this case, silver. This is the way I “do“ the technique - others do it differently! I design the shapes of silver and gold foil I will use, cut them out, bring pure silver to the surface of the silver by heating and quenching the piece of silver 8-9 times, then place the gold foil on the silver - with spit! The silver with the foil is p...ut on a hot plate and VERY carefully rubbed with a steel or agate tool (a burnisher) to put pressure on the foil. As it changes colour, you can see that it has fused to the silver. I then put the pieces of silver through a rolling mill, in this case with art paper, to texture it. The piece is then assembled adding ear posts, hooks and stones. Finally, by oxidising the some of the silver black, chemically, the gold additions are highlighted! The stones in these earrings and necklace are citrines or red sapphires set in 18 ct gold. Here are some of my sparkle gems range. I love the deep gem like colours encapsulated within chunky clear glass and draped in a layer of sparkling bubbles within the crystal. ... I heat solid rod colour and shape and blow it over a number of stages on a blowing iron to form the inner gem. Over this I gather one or more layers of clear glass from the furnace at 1149C. I shape the piece then create the bubbles by taking another gather of clear molten glass and after slightly cooling it I roll the piece on a metal bubble plate which is profiled to give many regularly spaced indents in the surface of the glass. Again, after allowing the piece to cool slightly I gather more clear glass over the top. This traps air in the indents which gives the sparkle veil effect floating over the gem. More gathers can be taken if desired. Each gather significantly increased the weight of the piece making it harder to handle. Some of my pieces are 7.5kg which I have to very delicately manoeuvre on the end of a 5 foot blowing iron. The glass is blown and shaped, puntied if it is to be opened into a vase shape and then annealed. Again, It all sounds so quick and easy but each step is only able to be achieved at the correct temperature and can involve many stages of reheating and shaping as working with glass is always a balance between too hot and it drips off the iron and too cold to work when I risk it cracking. As soon as the glass is the right temperature I have to work quickly before it cools too much to work. These are some of my constellation range. I love pieces with intense colour encapsulated within chunky clear glass and the bubbles seem to float on the surface. ... I pick up a piece of solid rod colour heated to 525C on the end of a blowing iron, heat it further, shape and thumb it to create a bubble. I then gather clear glass from the furnace at 1140C over it, shape it with wet newspaper and blown a little more. Then I take a further gather and hold the piece down into a grooved optic mould. I then score the grooves further by hand then cool the piece and gather again. This traps air in the grooves. The piece is reheated and shaped with a paper pad. My turning of the iron in the glory hole delivers the twisting bubbles which elongate to tear drops. After the thrill of the hot shop, then comes the cold working - grinding, cutting, polishing and a whole host of other techniques to play with....! But whilst the hot shop work is very intensive the cold working takes hours.... or days.... but the results are worth it.

There are some basic principles and techniques of glass blowing that are pretty much common to all pieces. But that makes them sound easy! I’ve been told by glass blowers that when blowing every day it takes 20 years to learn!! On that basis boy I’ve got a long way to go. It certainly needs practice. Also even if i have planned my piece and how to make it, once I start I can’t stop until it’s finished. There’s no opportunity to p...ut it aside, have a cup of tea and think about it. Once started I must continue and complete the hot work until it’s finished. That can be gruelling! But the risk is losing the piece by it smashing on the floor or dropping into the glory hole. Glass also had a will of its own so my plan needs to flex and adapt to the will and performance of the glass. I find swirling patterns intriguing and love creating this effect in hot glass. Inspiration can come from many places in the natural or everyday world. I love polar regions and ice. The colours are astounding in the ice ranging from pure white or crystal clear through aquas, turquoises to aqua marines and the colours constantly change with the light. Much of the surface of ice is textured by the effects of both the massive compression during its formation and the action of the sea and melt water that causes striations and dimples. ⭕️ MAKER TAKEOVER ⭕️ Alison Vincent Glass I mentioned in my last post that I love the fire that spontaneously burns at points during the process. Here are some images. Glass blowing is for me thrilling and very rewarding but it can be frustrating and very physically demanding - especially as I favour making weighty pieces up to 7.5kg - and it can be either overwhelmingly hot near the furnaces and glory holes in summer or freezing in winter!
