An honour to be named in The Telegraph top tips of places to visit as part of a stay The Master Builder's at Buckler's Hard - as Fiona Duncan picks the best from 20 years of reviews. Our pretty chapel and sails on the Beaulieu River both get a special mention https://bit.ly/37UQDbG

Did you know...the saying ‘Your number’s up’ may have originated at Buckler’s Hard.🤔
In the mid 18th century, ships at the village were built using teams of workmen. Each team was given a number and was carefully monitored by Master Shipbuilder Henry Adams. If he wasn't happy with their work, the team’s number would be displayed outside his office and he’d summon the unlucky men by shouting ‘Team 4, your number’s up’.
They definitely didn't want their number to be called!

As skilled craftsmen, shipwrights were in high demand during wartime, which meant they earned an above-average salary. Look out for luxury items such as decorated tableware as you step through the door of the reconstructed Shipwright’s Cottage. 🧐

Have you ever been ‘taken down a peg’ or given a ‘clean bill of health’?
Did you know both of these terms may have originated from nautical terms?⚓️😲
Pegs were used to control the hoisting of the flag on ships, and a vessel would be given a certificate to confirm that no crew member carried contagious disease.
... If you know any more examples of nautical terms being adopted into common usage we’d love to hear them!
