Chichester Fire Station Description

Chichester Fire Station (Station 42) is an immediate response station consisting of 5 wholetime (W /T) duty 'watches' (A, B, C, D and E), and 1 retained duty system (RDS) watch. The station was constructed in 1964.

There are 5 appliances:
- 42P1 Water Tender Fire Engine (WrL) - W /T (Crew of 5)
- 42P2 Water Tender Fire Engine (WrL) - RDS
- 42R1 Heavy Rescue Tender (HRT) (Crew of 3-5)
- 42S1 Breathing Apparatus Support Unit (BASU) (Crew of 2)
- 42M1 Off-Road 4WD (L4T) (Crew of 2)

Each W /T Watch has 5 personnel and work a standard 12hour shift pattern of 2 days (7am - 7pm) and 2 nights (7pm - 7am), between. This allows the Fire Station to be immediate response 24 /7.
Retained (RDS) personnel respond to alerters (pagers) 24 /7. They must be within 4 minutes away from the Fire Station to respond to emergency calls.

Chichester Fire Station also has an onsite heat and smoke chamber and vehicle servicing workshop / engineer.

On the incident logs you may also see some abbreviations:
HR = Hose Reel. Water jet used for smaller fires
BA = Breathing Apparatus.
PPV = Positive Pressure Ventilation. Fan used to disperse smoke
Hyd = Fire Hydrant

Chichester population estimated 2011 = 113, 800.
Total fire ground area approximately 303 square miles / 78, 632 hectares. The station ground is one of the largest in the country, and is a mix of rural, semi-rural and urban areas. Since the Closure of Bosham Fire station, Chichester also covers the former area of this station.
