Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division Saturday 01 September 18 Crawley Green FC 1 v Colney Heath FC 2 Crawley Green were edged out in a hard fought game as they lost 1-2 to unbeaten Colney Heath.
... The first half was a tight affair with no side really dominating the play. In the 9th minute Heath should have been awarded a penalty when Crawley's Sam Willett clattered Harry Lewis in the box. Amazingly the Referee waved play on and on the break Crawley were awarded a free kick which Aaron Morgan fired wide.
Willett then has a cross which was spilled by Liam Gautier in the Heath goal but the ball was cleared to safety. Crawley's new signing Tom Silford followed with a great run down the left but Jermaine Hall sliced his cross wide.
Just after the half hour Heath created the best chance of the game. Doug Edmee played in skipper Spencer Clarke-Mardel but his shot was well saved by Bart Pedrycz with his legs. Dan Fitzgerald fired wide from the following corner and shortly after Clarke-Mardel had another shot blocked and it finished 0-0 at the break.
In the second half it was Heath who started to dominate the game. Crawley's Mark Bunker conceded possession on the left and Pedrycz again saved well to deny Joe Newton.
Crawley replied with a long range effort from Hall which was easily saved by Gautier before Newton had another effort which crashed against the Crawley bar and the ball was cleared by Kyle Lincoln.
After making 3 good saves Crawley's Pedrycz had an Alisson moment just before the hour mark. He called for a ball which was going out for a goal kick and lost control. The ball fell to Harry Shepherd who managed to hit the post in front of an open goal but the rebound fell to Newton who tapped in to make 0-1.
Crawley pressed forward and after 67 minutes they were back in the game. Silford played in Sam Pemberton who made a strong run into the box and smashed the ball past Gautier to make it 1-1. Crawley's substitute Graham Clark then fired wide after being set up by Tyler Ingham.
Back came Heath and seven minutes later they re-took the lead. Clarke-Mardel was put through down the right and he drove the ball Pedrycz to make it 1-2. Pedrycz then saved another effort from Clarke-Mardel and Josh Humbert had a shot go wide.
Crawley were reduced to long ball tactics as they chased the game in the closing stages. Clark had another effort go just wide but Heath defended their lead well and they ran out worthy 1-2 winners.
Crawley Green Reserves started their season with a 0-3 defeat against last seasons Champions Shefford Town & Campton.

he Emirates FA Cup Preliminary Round Saturday 25 Aug 18 Crawley Green FC 2 v Aylesbury United FC 3 Crawley Green bowed out of The Emirates FA Cup with a 2-3 defeat against Aylesbury United from the Evo Stik League who now progress to the 1st Qualifying Round with the chance of winning Β£6,000 prize money.... Although the scoreline was much closer than it should have been in a game bossed by the visitors, Crawley came close to forcing a replay when two goal Graham Clark thumped a pile driver against the bar in the final minutes of the game.
The Ducks started well and they took the lead after 20 minutes in controversial circumstances. The Referee wrongly (refreshingly his admission after the game) over-ruled his Assistant to award a corner to The Ducks which was cleared by Crawley. However when the ball was crossed back into the box from the right and an unmarked Jack Wood dived in to head into the bottom corner to make it 0-1.
Crawley replied with a penalty shout against Tyler Ingham which was waived away by the Referee and followed up with Aaron Morgan shot which went wide.
The Ducks came back with effort from Sonny French which was well saved by Bart Perdycz in the Crawley goal. Crawley's Oluwanimilo Ajigbolamu then went through and Archie Davis in the Duck's goal scrambled the ball clear.
After 40 minutes the Ducks doubled their lead with a goal from another corner from the right. Greg Williams near post header was cleared off the line but the Assistant immediately flagged for a goal and the Ducks went in leading 0-2 at the break.
At 2-0 up and cruising the Ducks then hit the woodwork three times in the second period, before they were shaken when the Maroons pulled a goal back after 64 minutes. Substitute Graham Clark converted a cross from the right after Davis lost the ball to make it 1-2.
The Ducks responded well to their set back and they restored their 2 goal cushion again after 80 minutes. Jake Bewley broke down the left before finding the net for his first goal in nearly two years to make it 3-1.
Crawley refused to lie down and with six minutes remaining they grabbed another goal. A long clearance was collected by Clark who cut inside two defenders to drive the ball past Davis to make it 2-3.
In the closing minutes Crawley took the game to the Ducks and were only denied a replay by the cross bar. The visitors held on for a worthy win but credit must go to Crawley who battled to the final whistle.
Next week Crawley are back in League action when they entertain Colney Heath on Saturday 01 Sep 18. Crawley Green Reserves also open their league campaign on Saturday with an away game at last season's champions Shefford Town & Campton FC.
