As a consultant with my own limited company, and a very good record of paying my mortgage with my bank over 15 years, I was shocked to discover that they wouldn’t provide a new mortgage for my wife and I when we decided to move to the coast. The house in Cornwall we wanted to buy was identical in value to our old house in Hertfordshire. However, after leaving full time employment by choice, my recent income through my company had been unstable - some good years, some less good (with bad debts) - and so the bank decided that I wasn’t worth supporting.
