We aim to raise and increase community awareness and understanding of dementia within Newtown and surrounding areas.
Dementia Friendly Newtown Description
In June 2016, a group of like-minded individuals, working in collaboration with Newtown Town Council and Alzheimer’s Society, held a public meeting which explored the idea of making Newtown a Dementia Friendly Community.
The interest generated was such that a Steering Committee was formed made up of carers, committed individuals, health and social care professionals and a range of other community and voluntary organisations.
After a further meetings, Karen Rodenburg, Dementia Friendly Communities Coordinator, Montgomeryshire & Radnorshire, announced on 19th July that Dementia Friendly Newtown (DFN) had become the third community in the area to achieve “Working towards” status.

For the second year in a row, Dementia Friends Newtown, (DFN) received fantastic support from the people of Newtown and surrounding areas at the Newtown Food Festival. The stand, manned by team of volunteers, who gave out information and leaflets to people and their friends and families affected by dementia. We heard many uplifting stories and were able to assist many other looking for advice and support. [ 44 more words ]
