#DDay75 : From the Dorset County Museum Photographic Archive - Transport Captain U.S. Army with driver, Victoria Park, #Dorchester for embarkation to France.
US troops were massed at various locations in the South of England ready for embarkation, to the extent that it was joked that “it is a wonder Britain hasn't sunk under the weight of the tanks and guns”. Dorset was one of the key areas and Dorchester played its part in hosting the troops until the time came for them to ...set off from Weymouth. According to the records, parts of the 18 Infantry Regiment were located in Dorchester, as were the 701st Ordnance Light Maintenance Company and the 1st Quartermaster Company. Other troops were based in villages around the town.
This made quite an impact on the town. Army trucks lined the streets. Soldiers were made as comfortable as possible. They camped out in gardens, and made use of empty garages to brew up coffee, play cards and listen to the radio. Some troops were seen sitting on the garden walls waiting for the call to go to the railway stations to take the trains down to Weymouth.

Its #volunteersweek - We like to thank our volunteers who have collectively given thousands of hours of their time to support the museum over the years and continue to be involved in a wide range of activities at the museum as it goes through its transistion. From documenting, curating and conserving collections to working at Brewery Square and recently our touring Inflatable Museum.
Here Flora our volunteer in the Fine Arts Department explains why she became a volunteer and the collection she is currently working on
