Dressage At Hickstead

About Dressage At Hickstead

The South East's premier dressage venue

Dressage At Hickstead Description

Dressage at Hickstead was founded in 1993 after four years of preparatory work by International trainer Dane Rawlins and a small group of financial supporters, on a site of land at Douglas Bunn’s All England Jumping Course in Hickstead, West Sussex. Its first year coincided with the demise of the fantastic Goodwood dressage venue. Within the space of only a few years it grew to become Britain’s premier venue for both International and National dressage competitions

Dressage at Hickstead has promoted Britain’s status in the sport of dressage and is now considered to be a world class dressage venue. It is highly regarded on the International scene, voted by riders as hosting the 3rd best International show after Rotterdam and Aachen.

The venue has also contributed greatly to the opportunities available for our own British riders. In 1998 we had the privilege to be selected by the FEI to host the Junior and Young Rider European Dressage Championships, a great honour not only for Dressage at Hickstead but also for Great Britain. This event was made even more memorable when the British Junior Team took the Bronze Medal.

In 2003 Dressage at Hickstead was the home to the enormously successful FEI European Championships at which the British Team took the Bronze Medal behind Spain and winners Germany. Previously it had appeared that Team GB (comprising Emma Hindle with Wie Weltmeyer, Emile Faurie with Rasher Hopes, Richard Davison with Ballaseyr Royale and Nicola McGivern with Active Walero) would not qualify for the Athens Olympics but thanks to the Dressage at Hickstead team, and the wonderful home support, our four team members secured the Olympic ticket.

Dressage at Hickstead continues to grow. It was with great pride in 2009 that we welcomed the Exquis World Dressage Masters Series and Moorlands Totilas, who made history at Hickstead. He was competing for the first time abroad at Grand Prix level and scored a new World Record in the Kur. Laura Bechtolsheimer also scored a new personal best. It was an unbelievable show.

There followed a break in 2011 due to the Olympics but in 2013 the FEI recreated the CDIO Nations Cup and four venues were chosen to trial the new format – Vidauban in France, Rotterdam in Holland, Aachen in Germany and Hickstead. We were honoured to be the last of the series in 2013. Germany won the overall Nations Cup combined from the above shows. Seven Teams competed at Hickstead with the Nations Cup being decided in the Freestyle Competition, this made for exciting viewing with Great Britain winning the Hickstead leg.

Gorgeous sunny day for our penultimate show! 🌞🌞

Wow; what a super Premier League and so well run. Improved parking even had it rained; it did not! Super surfaces; fantastic smiling nice staff from the gate to the office via the stewards!!

An excellent few days and made me and my horses enjoy competing again.

A note from me has to include a note on the loos. Having been rather rude about these some years ago I can offer nothing but praise and gratitude for the upgrade! Dane Rawlings I missed you to thank you in person!

User

Very well run show with an extremely helpful team that are always on hand to support.

Marvellous venue. Weather not great but arena surfaces are still super and all that can be done to mitigate the mud problems, has been done. Friendly, helpful crew.

User

It has been a while since I competed myself (2004), but competing at CDI*** Hickstead is a memory for life. Excellent organization, super venue, super nice people. Everything a rider needs to "peak-perform". Also my clients love to go there.

User

I love Hickstead. Loads of space to park and warm up. Always very well run. X

I have just been to the premier league at Hickstead for the first time - what a well run show, friendly people and lovely stables! The high roofs and overhang on the stables meant that the sun did not shine directly onto the horses & they stayed much cooler than the normal temporary boxes. My horse was very happy and relaxed! thank you Hickstead team, I will be back next year!

Hickstead Premier League: We felt so sorry for the organisers of this event. It is a summer show, and so one would just not expect that amount of rain and the effect it would have on the lorry park and stable areas.

No one can control the weather. Rain makes puddles and floods!

They constantly worked to get competitors in and out as efficiently as possible given the conditions.

The stewards and organisers worked quickly and efficiently, times were out quickly, rosettes were lovely and everyone was helpful.

The arenas had puddles in them yes, but they weren't over deep. Probably worse at Sheepgate last week.

Watched Matt Frost and Paul Friday doing their Grand Prix tests in the worst of the thunder storms today - both achieved impressive scores despite the conditions. That's professional.

User

Fantastic just one of the most brilliant venues we have in the south-east run superbly we are very very unlucky people always feel privileged to be competing judging or helping clients at this wonderful venue

User

Fabulous venue with such lovely people all around making you feel welcome even if a small fish in the big sea so to speak.

Can't wait to do my freestyle tomorrow.

User

Brilliant venue - fantastic warm ups - the ladies that run it and work in the office are lovely, so helpful and encouraging! Judging is superb - dressage at Hickstead is a 'must go to competition' and always feels special.

User

As a spectator I found the venue was really well organised, parking was easy, and shopping area was varied. Plenty to see and do and the food stalls were clean, the food was good and the staff very polite. The horse dressage was amazing deceptively light footed they danced wonderfully. I really enjoyed our day out and have to thank Beverley and Haley for making it possible.

Another fabulous weekend at Hickstead International. The team are just amazing and the atmosphere was just brilliant x

Amazing venue

User

Always such a fabulous show, everyone is super friendly and helpful and nothing is ever a problem, no matter how much help I've needed in the past! A truly great team who put in so much effort to help competitors relax and enjoy the show. :-)

User

Very dissapointed, we had bought grand stand tickets, and we were probably in minority, no checking of tickets coming in and where was the grand stand? Nice touch with the bistro overlooking the warm up, but there again, where were the stewards, people hand walking their horses in the middle not paying attention to riders warming up. Last but nor least, no real prize giving for the Grand Prix. Hopefully next year????
