As part of Ryan's grade we've been working on Soul Man by the Blues Brothers.
The transition from the vamp section into the chorus section can be quite challenging for some, and Ryan has been working super hard to make that transition and today we finally nailed it!
... All we need to do now is complete this piece by learning the bridge and outro sections and tidy up overall and then we can move onto his next piece!
Wait a go dude!

Good Morning!
Last night I watched a video of the great Mike Mangini playing on some tins and buckets for fun, and It got me thinking back to a time where i didnt have a kit and i used to play on the pots and pans, on the table, even sometimes on the sofa.
It made me wonder what some of you guys may have played on before you got a kit?
... We would love to here some of the crazy ideas yous had; for those that don't have a kit at the minute, what are you using to practice.
Please discuss below. ππ₯

Everyone meet Daniel, Daniel meet everybody π
I am covering lessons for one of the teachers today and I have been working with Daniel on his double pedal technique whilst playing 1/4 and 1/8 note patterns on the ride and also with the backbeat.
This really takes effort as you have to build independence in all limbs.
... Seems Craig is doing some splendid work, as Daniel picked this exercise up very quickly!
Watch him below!

Hey guys check out this young King of Pop!
Me and Lennon have been working on Billie Jean in preparation for his Grade 1.
The most challenging part of this piece is a progressive open hi hat pattern into a Disco Beat in Section C and then to repeat the entire section.
... We managed to do this all the way through today AND Lennon even remembered the crash cymbal on beat one, as you can see from the video.
This kid is doing so well despite only being with us for a short time.
Now it's time to move on and look at a new piece.
Well done dude! ππππππ₯

Good Morning Troops!
Check out this cool chick!
We have been working on making our own little song, playing a basic rock beat groove and creating some fills using phonetic rhythms (Tea, Coffee, Lemonade and Coca-Cola) on the snare and toms.
... We finally got the rock beat sorted, and wanted to share her success with you today.
Next lesson, we are going to put them all together with the phonetic rhythms. Watch this space π
Have you heard of any other phrases to help teach different rhythm patterns? We'd love to hear them all, no matter how weird and wonderful.

Class.... New Drum Star
Great to see so many people enjoying drumming today....
Today Jack started the lesson with some reading of a piece weβve been looking at the past couple of weeks. Weβve been working on semi quaver sight reading and how groupings of them landing over the bar makes us rely heavily on counting and knowing where the 1,2,3 and 4 are. He is super keen and always shows up prepared after having practiced through the week.
Since he smashed through that we decided weβd rock out and learn some Guns βnβ roses. You can see he enjoyed it right...? π
Great job dude!! Keep up the great work! π π₯

Today we have Seb our fellow Blues Brother studying Soul Man in preparation for his Grades. He's really coming on as a Drummer since he joined us here at Drumstars. This piece focuses on 1/8th note grooves, moving the bass drum into different positions and today we finally cracked it!
Wait a go Seb lad!

Here's Dom working on some hand technique stuff at the weekend. We've identified the strengths and weaknesses of each hand and have studied exercises that make sure the weaker hand is getting the training it needs. Not only that, we are looking at how to apply this method around the kit to create new ideas for fills by having each hand work as independently as possible. Great work Dom! ππ₯
