To mark the 108th anniversary of the one of the nation's favourite cinemas, The Dukes will be screening Carl Theodor Dreyer's seminal silent masterpiece The Passion of Joan of Arc from a rare 35mm print. The film will also be accompanied by a new original live score by musicians Heliopause & This Ship Argo, who will be using layered vocal loops and electronica to emphasise the film’s unusual cinematography and portrayal of Joan's emotional state of mind.
This landmark of cine...ma, made in 1928 with this year marking it's 90th anniversary since release, depicts one of history’s most captivating women, played by Renée Jeanne Falconetti in her only screen role, but one that has gone down the annals of cinema as one of the most astonishing performances ever committed to film. Receiving visions as a teenage peasant girl, Joan of Arc managed to convince the King of France to let her lead his armies in order to drive the English from France. After several successful battles, she was subsequently captured, held to trial and burnt at the stake, only aged 19. The French film focuses on the transcripts of her trial in 1431 as the French clerical court tried to discredit her claim that she was sent on the mission by God.
Presented in association with Scalarama, a national celebration of cinema organised by everyone, for everyone, every September.

Went to Duke of York's yesterday to watch My Generation, a look at the 60's narrated by Michael Caine and coincided with his 85th birthday. The seats were lovely and comfy, the sound was fab there is a bar where you can take drinks into the auditorium (and food) they serve gorgeous pizzas there or if you'd rather, tea and a lump of cake and they looked yummy , the only small gripe was the length of time 2 girls took to serve behind the bar but maybe if they had 3 this would help. All in all I can't wait to go back there

User

This is a great place to go the staff are fantastic the kids adore it good variety of kids club films

User

The Dukes is my favourite cinema in Brighton or anywhere & just about my favourite place generally. So friendly, so cosy - & such great cake.

User

My first visit and I loved it! It is unique, the staff are friendly, the picture house is clean and well maintained. Comfortable seats and plenty of leg room. I will definitely be going again... in fact the Duke of York's may have changed the way I go to see films for the better. Thank you for the friendly welcome and a wonderful evening.

User

Mamma Mia was superb, who can’t be cheered by ABBA 😊😊😊

User

Lovely art deco cinema, always a good selection of films & great wine to match! They even have fleecy blankets if you like to get all snug while watching a movie...

User

Love sitting up on the balcony sofas enjoying a delicious pizza and beer, while watching the film... It makes going to the cinema a real treat!!

User

It was a little bit special, the extra touches of having comfy squishy seats and blankets and hot chocolate just made such a difference. I was wondering why my friends had chosen to drive down to Brighton from Lewes but all made sense when we got there. Lovely, touch of elegance and class.

Hello, I would just like to say how wonderful E**** is who works for you. We come every week for toddler time and she truly makes our visit with her exceptional customer service! Not only is she super friendly to both the kids and the adults but being a bit harassed most weeks due to having toddlers in toe she makes our visit more pleasant by always greeting us with a smile, remembering our orders and generally delivering exceptional customer care to us. She is an amazing member of staff and you are extremely lucky to have her at your front of house with her great reception. Please feel free to pass this onto her as I think she deserves to know how valued and amazing she is

User

Great venue, friendly staff, all the films you could possibly want to see and to top it all, grown up food and drink to enjoy while you relax on a squishy sofa!

User

Great cinema showing some of the best 'alternative' films. Good choice of drinks catering to lots of different diet, same goes for the food. Blankets if you get cold. Great atmosphere and friendly enthusiastic staff. Love it!

User

Fabulous hospitality for the one-off screening of Twin Peaks, Fire Walks with Me, complete with cleverly dressed window, free coffee and doughnuts, (but not cherry pie!) for all patrons. Friendly staff, passionate about movies. I will return soon.

User

Absolutely love coming here every week for the Little Screamers viewings with my 5mo. Service brilliant, coffee super and really good access (better than Dukes @ Komedia but that's understandable due to its location). Could subtitles please be considered during these performances so that if the little ones lock off we can still follow the film?

User

A brilliantly production of Julius Caesar live from The Bridge .

User

Lovely cinema, very comfortable seats, lots of leg room.the only negative was on a very busy evening, the queue for drinks etc was out the door, and it was but chaotic with people not sure if the queue was for tickets, just to get in , etc. All staff friendly.

User

Great place, intimate, great snacks, great sound system and got to watch the next Start Wars movie. What more could a girl want!

User

American Honey is in the great tradition of 'losers' on the road, revealing the divides in American society and the resilience of those close to the bottom of the social heap. A kicking sound track and a great cast mean 3 hours! pass quickly if not always easily.

User

Went to watch the Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday 13th May. Unfortunately people were encouraged to dance on the stage during the songs so I couldn't see the screen for the majority of the countries. ( I was sat on the front row). Not worth the £21.50 I paid.

User

Really disappointed to hear Cineworld have decided to make all the Picturehouse projectionists redundant.
