Gallipoli Association Description

Numerous veterans' associations were formed in the years following the Great War (1914-1918) but surprisingly none existed for the Gallipoli campaign of 1915-16 until 1969 when on the initiative of Major Edgar Banner, a number of veterans established an informal group, meeting from time to time to exchange shared memories and if possible to recall not only their own experiences but also those of the units in which they served. Very soon they had started their own Association Journal, 'The Gallipolian' was initially cyclostyled but, as membership increased, it became a properly printed magazine published three times a year, in which articles of high historical, academic and literary merit appeared.

On This Day in 1915: "It is quite calm now and a fine day; thus we are given an opportunity of digging the mud out of the trenches and to work on a system of drainage. But we want roofing badly. Unlike " V " Beach, now a perfect harbour, safe against almost any sea, " W " Beach at the first heavy swell becomes impossible for landing any supplies.

Deputy Quartermaster General Walter Campbell, Headquarters, MEF - It took five long weeks from the despatch of Monro’s appreciation of the situation at Gallipoli, in which he clearly recommended evacuation, to his receipt on 8 December of the final decision of the British Cabinet taken the day before). At last a decision was made: Anzac and Suvla would be evacuated and the final date was set for 19 December.

On This Day in 1915 - Captain Peter Ashton, 1st Herefordshire Regt, 158th Brigade, 53rd Division - Although there were many gullies at both Anzac and Helles, the location of most of the trenches up on the ridges and spurs meant that they were spared the worst of the floods, though communication through the formerly dry gullies was halted. But at Suvla the wide open spaces of the plain were crossed by several streams that were capable of catastrophic flooding.

ANZAC - Private George Edward King, 19th Battalion AIF, 5th Brigade, 2nd Australian Division, ANZAC - King, in his diary entry for 25 November, unknowingly wrote about a new ruse that was going to help with the evacuation. Rumours were of course spreading at the time, but no one ever thought that Gallipoli would be abandoned.

A special morning at Ashton Cenotaph where Gallipoli Association member Mike Crane laid the wreath, a replica of the exact wreath placed there by the old comrades of the 9th Manchester Regiment all those years ago.
