About Glossop Labour Club

Glossop Labour Club is an independent social club home to people who share a progressive outlook on life.

Glossop Labour Club Description

Events and community

We are at the heart of a vibrant community in Glossop. Regular activities at the club include a Folk Club on Tuesdays and an informal music session on Fridays. We are home to a walking group, a reading group, a women's group and a knitting group. The Glossop Folk Train visits us once a month and we host Glossop Record Club for all you Vinyl junkies. We are a community space and we host a number of groups including the Glossop Guild, Samba Band, a Creative Writing group, Zumba, Peace Group, People's Kitchen and many others.

History

The club was founded in 1906 by some of Glossopdale's leading trade unionists, co-operators and suffragettes. They were young and enthusiastic socialists and were extremely active politically in the valley. Throughout our history we have been home to people from all the various traditions on the left and to people with no party political affiliation.

Membership

Whilst many of our activities are open to the public, we are a members club. To become a member pop in and collect a form from the bar. Our normal membership is called a 'social' membership and costs just £5 a year. Once you've been a member for a year you can apply for full membership which entitles you to vote in elections and to stand for committee.

Principles

We are proud of our socialist history and expect members to abide by our principles of equality and liberty for all. We do not tolerate sexism, racism or any form of hatred towards minority groups.

Our next Defiance Sessions live music gig. Tickets on sale behind the bar.
From New York City, Steve Suffet describes himself as an old fashioned folksinger. His repertoire is a mixture of railroad songs, trucker songs, coal miner songs, cowboy songs, union songs, old time ballads, blues, ragtime, Gospel, bluegrass, topical-political songs, Woody Guthrie songs, and whatever else tickles his fancy. .
In the 1960s, Steve appeared at several of the legendary Broadside hoots in ...New York City and performed at the various pass-the-basket houses in Greenwich Village, and on warm Sunday afternoons he could be found partaking in the music making around the fountain in Washington Square Park.
In the intervening 50 years Steve has played at political rallies and demonstrations, campgrounds, schools, day care centers, weddings, parks, pubs, and pick-up jam sessions. He's accompanied the legendary Pete Seeger and played his songs at the Occupy Wall Street demonstrations in 2011.

EVENT: UNIVERSAL CREDIT IN THE HIGH PEAK: WHAT WILL HAPPEN AND HOW SHOULD WE RESPOND ? Monday 3 September, Mason’s Arms, High Street, New Mills from 7pm. Universal Credit is going to be rolled out in the High Peak to all new claimants from September 12. It will not affect existing claimants at this stage UNLESS they change their circumstances. The roll out of Universal Credit is continuing to take place across the country despite the huge amount of criticism from all ...quarters and the call to stop implementation until the problems have been fixed. Charlotte Hughes and Colin Hampton will be talking about the impact of Universal Credit has had in Ashton and Chesterfield respectively. There will be a report on the support currently in place in preparation for Universal Credit and a discussion on what else members of the community might be able to do to help. All those with an interest in this issue or want to explore ways in which they may be able to help are encouraged to attend.

This framed and signed 'Daily Mail' cartoon was acquired for the Club at yesterday's Democracy Road show with Chris Williamson, MP and Tosh McDonald, recent President of ASLEF. Tosh (standing with his arms folded) auctioned the signed copy to raise funds. Great that the 'Daily Mail' is helping to fund such a good cause!!
