About Hms King Alfred

This is the official Facebook page for HMS King Alfred, a Reserve unit of the Royal Navy.

Hms King Alfred Description

HMS King Alfred is a Royal Naval Reserve Training Unit for the Southern region of the UK. Drawing in reservists from many of the bordering counties of Hampshire, as far West as Dorset, across to Sussex and southern Kent and even attracting Naval reservists who live and work in London but who wish to return to conduct their training on the South coast at the historic, home of the Royal Navy.
With HM Naval Base Portsmouth as a close neighbour, HMS King Alfred enjoys a fine view across Portsmouth harbour to the destroyers, frigates and in the not-so-distant future, to the new aircraft carriers of the Fleet where they will be berthed in the Dockyard when not at sea on patrol.

HMS King Alfred's personnel can also enjoy access to the outstanding sailing in the Solent, watersports and other sporting facilities available on site at HMS Excellent, at the City Centre's Combined Service facilities in Temeraire, HMS Collingwood and any military adventurous training opportunities across the entire country and locations abroad.
HMS King Alfred is fortunate to have the Royal Navy's Command Headquarters at close proximity - helping us to keep a clear focus on future plans for the Royal Navy and Maritime Reserves, while working together on the Future Force and Future Reserves 2020.

Thank you for all the interest in our post on the Commonwealth and Royal Naval Reserve personnel who served at the St Nazaire raid.
We’ve a particular connection with all in the Royal Australian Navy Volunteer Reserve, who in #WWII did the second stage of their training at HMS King Alfred.
Amongst them were Lt N. B. H. Wallis, RANVR, (Motor Launch 192) and Lt W Wallach RANVR (Motor Launch 270), both were awarded the DSC for their actions during the raid and S/LT P. W. Landy,... RANVR, (Motor Launch 306).
For more information on the RANVR and the Australian connection with HMS King Alfred, the Naval Historical Society of Australia has a number of good articles on their website.

It’s not long until the 75th anniversary of D-Day.
This week in preparation, all 122 panels and every name upon them at the imposing Naval War Memorial on Portsmouth seafront were being painstakingly cleaned and restored.
For the full story: http://ow.ly/mNxO50p41Fb
... Many of those of who served at D-Day (especially on the landing craft) were Royal Naval Reserve trained at HMS King Alfred and with that connection we’re looking forward to the anniversary.

Tonight's been a very special night for the unit! Not only have we had a visit from CMR and SO1 RNR (head of the Reserves and his staff), some of our Ship's Company received very prestigious awards 👏
One of our Permanent Staff was awarded a Commander Maritime Reserves Commendation for his selfless efforts in saving the life of a member of the Ship's Company last year.
And Cdre Quinn presented CPO Turley with his Certificate of Valediction, celebrating for his outstanding 35 years of service. You'll be missed!

We like a quick look at Royal Naval Reserve #history and today is the anniversary of the birth of Lt Alec Guinness, RNVR.
Commander of Landing Craft LCI (L) 124, he fought at the Sicily & Anzio landings and ran covert operations supplying the resistance fighting the Germans in Yugoslavia.
He is perhaps better known for his post-war career – Actor, Oscar winner, star of Bridge on the River Kwai and Obi-Wan Kennobi in #StarWars!

We've had an excellent time showing our visitors around and letting them have a go at some Seamanship skills. We hope you all have had as much fun as we have during today's Royal Naval Reserve Experience Day!

75 years ago today, on 28 March 1942, the #GreatestRaid of #WWII, #OperationChariot was drawing to a close.
The dry dock at Saint-Nazaire, Pays De La Loire, France had been successfully attacked by a Combined Operations Raid. The damage ensured that it could not be used by the German Navy for the rest of the war as a base from which their surface ships could attack allied convoys. At 02:30, after ferocious fighting, the allied forces withdrew with the mission accomplished.
...This one action resulted in the award of 5 VC; 4 DSO; 17 DSC; 11 MC; 4 CGM; 5 DCM; 24 DSM and 15 MM. Another 51 men were mentioned in dispatches, 22 of them posthumously.
Fighting alongside the Royal Navy & Royal Marines on the operation were sailors from the Royal Naval Reserve, Royal Canadian Navy (Regular and Reserve) & the Royal Australian Navy.
We will remember them.

Last night was a great chance for sailors from HMS King Alfred to train with HMS Mersey, one of the Royal Navy's very busy Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV).
We also took the opportunity to show the South East RFCA team some of what we do in the Royal Naval Reserve and some the fantastic sea-going opportunities available.
Brilliant also to catch up with some of the #Reservists working full time on the ship, including our friends from HMS CALLIOPE. A number of HMS King Alfred's ...sailors have worked as part of the team on HMS Mersey and it's been hugely beneficial.
Thank you to all of the team onboard & we look forward to supporting you!

It wasn’t just our MediaTeam training at the weekend, HMS King Alfred's Medical Branch ran a Team Building & Education Day at The Gordon Museum of Pathology, King's College London.
They didn’t plan to be colour co-ordinated 🤔 but it seems even the table joined in 😁
There’s a wide range of interesting and challenging medical roles in the Royal Naval Reserve and details are at: https://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/…/royal-na va…/what-could-you-do

Having a good weekend?
For HMS King Alfred's media team, we’ve had a great weekend! We've been training in #Portsmouth with the other Royal Naval Reserve unit media teams & catching up with some of our reservist sailors working full time in the Royal Navy.
Thank you to HMS Tyne, Alex & Sam from the Royal Navy Media team, the RN photo team, & the Royal Naval Reserve Media Ops branch for organising the training!
... If you'd be interested in working with the Media in your spare time as part of the Royal Naval Reserve, you can find out more at: https://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/…/royal-na va…/what-could-you-do
