Icklesham Village Description

About our village:

Icklesham is a village located along the A259 Hastings to Rye road in East Sussex, England.

The village offers beautiful views of Rye, the coast & Brede valley. Located in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. With walks along the 1066 footpaths, woodlands & fields. Visit windmills, wind turbines, oast houses, rivers, the coast & country pubs.

Icklesham's historic roots can be traced back to 772, when it appeared as Icoleshamme in a land charter signed by Offa, King of Mercia. Strategically located on the River Brede, it was a prime target in the Norman invasion of 1066. 700 years later, evacuation plans were prepared in case of an invasion by Napoleon. The 12th-century parish church is dedicated to St Nicholas. The windmill on Hoggs Hill was built in Pett in 1781 and moved to Icklesham in 1790. It is the only existing post mill in the UK retaining a roof mounted fantail. Today it is the recording studios of Sir Paul McCartney.

In 1833 John Parry, in his book 'A historical & descriptive account of the coasts of Sussex' wrote. . . "A country from hence to Ickleshaam, is of the most ornamentally wooded & pastoral aspect imagineable, varied by frequently recurring hill and dale. Here, if ever, the poet might exclaim. . . . Pallas her hand hath built before us, all things of the wood! . "
