Worked here for a number of years , in the bar , so service was obviously top notch , but also came down for a meal in July 2017 , great service , and food was lovely

User

Went today for lunch with the family....really impressed. The staff were lovely and charming and helpful and friendly. There was a lunchtime specials board....3 courses for 9.99 and the courses were very generous and very nice...i would certainly recommend!!!!

User

User

First time been here and I must say the food was lovely, but I did think it was a bit pricey. Staff was ok but not very talkative. I will return and see if any better

User

Went on recommendation although the Jolly Roger was a haunt of ours years ago when it was more of a 'local' rather than the pub-restaurant it is today. We had been advised to book so we did, but being a Tuesday evening wasn't busy so we virtually had the modern restaurant section to ourselves ! So after our mains (Steak and Kidney pie, Smoked Haddock, both good) we took ourselves off to the cosy, nautical bar for coffee and cheese board. Prefer the bar to the restaurant for atmosphere, at least on a quiet Tuesday.

User

Love the location. Food is yummy but very over priced for what it is. Sadly the staff let the pub down, they are rude and couldn't care less.

User

New waitress no clue, ordered curry of the day £9.95 and fish and chips £12.95. Curry was literally curry and rice, no naan, no popadum or mango chuckney. No homemade tartar sauce. When we complained basically got told was our fault. Really poor service. Won't be back for a long while.

User

Lovely chips here today, however have never been so cold in my life! No radiators working and when questioned, the waitress told us the heating system is ancient and the brewery won’t spend any money! Such a shame.

User

As locals we often visit the jolly but have been put off since visiting on Thursday. The pub was beyond freezing and the staff couldn’t have cared less. They were fine with their electric heater behind the bar! Never mind the people paying money to have a few drinks and meals there! I had an average chicken burger with a stale bun and we left early due to the freezing conditions. We’ve always been loyal customers of the jolly but thinking we’ll go elsewhere in future.

User

Went there Sunday evening, ordered drinks for myself and wife then when I tried to order food I was informed that they are not serving Bar food at the moment.Yet they were happily serving food to those in the restaurant, are we in the bar suddenly second class citicens? We used to be treated equally, we order from the same menu and we pay the same prices so, why are we suddenly being treated like plebs ? This is wrong so wrong. We went there regularly and spent upwards of £60 + per visit. They have lost our custom and hopeful some of yours too.

User

We visited Friday 11th, ordered three starters and four mains.

Starters:

Whitebait served with four pieces of bread with no condiment to accompany

Chicken goujons looked Iceland quality

Deep fried brie - no complaints

Mains:

Sirloin steak wasn't seasoned in the slightest, one of the most bland steaks I've ever eaten, accompanied by three dehydrated mushrooms.

2x tuna steaks both horrendously dry and plain, looked like tinned tuna moulded into a steak.

Bacon burger - no complaints

Truly a disappointment and looking at other reviews that confirm that the Jolly will no longer receive our custom.

We have been going into the Jolly to eat for years, especially for special occasions. This time was for our son's birthday, there were only 4 of us and neither the bar or the restaurant were very busy but these were the worst meals we have had. The starters were ok but nothing to write home about. The dim sums cooked out of a packet. Dry bread with the whitebait. The problem was with the mains, not just 1 or 2 but all 4. I had Lamb Shank which was so dry and really not very nice, the green beans couldn't be cut and the veg had obviously been heated in the microwave as the bowl they came out in was incredibly hot. The barracuda which my husband had was disgusting, I can't believe he actually ate it. My sons steak was meant to be a rare rib eye, he knows his steak and it didn't look or taste anything like rib eye and wasn't rare. His girlfriend had Mousakka which was really dry though apparently the garlic bread was quite nice. It will be a very long time before we go back again.

User

Totally agree with the last review, it was freezing today. The clientele are great as are the staff, but there needs to be a review of how it is being looked after. I love this pub and have been a loyal customer for 34 years. I’m so sad that it has come to this

User

No problem with the food but the pub was freezing cold. Radiators not working. When we requested they be turned on staff advised us the brewery won’t spend any money on the outdated boiler. My advice is don’t eat there until the spring/summer.

User

I had a velvet prawn starter, but when the starter arrived there were only 2 prawns on the plate. The starter was priced at £5.25. When I complained to the young waitress she couldn't care less and had the audacity to shrug her shoulders when I asked if she deemed this acceptable, and her attitude was absolutely appalling.

We decided to settle the bill and not stay for mains. Definitely wouldn't recommend this pub for food.

User

Dont even deserve this one star! Fly embedded in our one of our meals. Dry as a bone chicken, cold veg just to name a couple issues. Probably some of the most miserable looking staff. Will not be paying this place a visit again. Certainly gone down hill.
