Lomond Equine Salt Therapy

About Lomond Equine Salt Therapy

Salt therapy brought to your stable. This benefits performance horses, as well as those with respiratory, sinus, or skin issues.

Lomond Equine Salt Therapy Description

Salt therapy (or halotherapy, from Greek halos, meaning salt) aims to replicate the microclimate found in salt caves. It was observed by a Polish doctor in the 1840s that workers in salt mines did not develop respiratory conditions. Dry salt particles are kept at a constant concentration in the treatment room or stable, which the horse inhales and absorbs through the skin. This treats respiratory conditions, skin problems, and mineral deficiencies. Performance horses with no specific health problems also benefit from increased lung function and improved overall wellbeing.

Dry salt aerosol creates a microclimate similar to that in salt caves, at the beach, or a waterfall. These are known for promoting positive moods and feelings of wellbeing due to their abundance of negative ions. Negative air ionisation treatments have been associated with lower depression scores in humans, and negative ions also have bactericidal action. Replicating this ionised environment is a key aspect of salt therapy treatments.

Initial salt therapy packages consist of three daily sessions to kick-start your horse’s treatment. This usually does the bulk of the mucolytic work and skin cleansing, clearing the airways and soothing itchy areas. This package also includes your horse’s initial consultation, following which we will develop a treatment plan.
We usually recommend regular sessions following this initial treatment. Pre- and post-competition treatment packages include two or three daily sessions, which should be schedules within a couple of days of competition.

πŸŒŸπŸ¦„ Mud Fever Case Study update: Rosie πŸ¦„πŸŒŸ
Top left to bottom right: Day one, Day three, one week after treatment, two weeks after treatment.
Rosie's near hind was swollen and covered scabs. After soaking away the scabs, she was treated with three salt therapy sessions over three consecutive days. This was followed by one additional session after a week (at the time of third photo).
... From the first few days, the sores visibly began to dry out. The infection was killed off, causing no more pus. After a week, the mud fever was almost entirely gone, and healthy skin now visible where the sores were. A week later, these areas are all healed, with hair regrowth.
In total, we washed the leg to soak away scabs with warm water three times, and didn't apply any creams or barriers. We managed to avoid the need for antibiotics or even hibiscrub - a win for Rosie's natural microbiota!

All horses can benefit from cleaner, clearer airways. Whether they have a respiratory problem or not, salt works as an expectorant and breaks down mucus in the lungs and sinuses, which helps to clear it. Saline is used in nebulisers to assist in delivering medications, but the dry salt aerosol we use can reap many of the same benefits in a natural and noninvasive way.
These horses have healthy clear, runny mucus, but in many cases when treating horses with COPD, asthma, sinus...itis, or allergies, it can be thick and opaque.
In our experience, when treating horses with a build-up of mucus from their respiratory condition(s), salt therapy treatments over several consecutive days are the best way to clear this mucus. Once the build-up is removed, and we are on top of the problem, these conditions can often be managed with a top-up session every two to six weeks.

Fact: the more white hair your horse has, the more they are drawn to swamp monster life.

πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ Why use salt therapy? πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ
Because it works! Check out how we treated Rosie's mud fever - it was almost completely cleared up in a week.
Left to right: day one, day three, day ten.
... Rosie only had four salt therapy sessions during this time - three at the beginning, and one on the last day. The infection is gone, so now it's just a case of waiting for the new skin to heal up and for hair to grow back! We managed to avoid antibiotics, and only washed the leg with warm water three times to soak away scabs and infection (no hibiscrub!).

✨ How does salt therapy work? ✨
Salt therapy works differently from visiting a salt cave or staying at the seaside. While these natural microclimates are excellent, the simulated salt cave delivers salt in a more useful way, at an appropriate dose. This is because of the research and technology behind it.
More than 80% of the particles (dry salt aerosol) produced by the halogenerator/salt machine are smaller than 10 micrometers in diameter. For reference, a strand of hair is ...50 micrometers across!
This means that the salt can be absorbed more readily, and it can reach the upper and lower respiratory tract. Sea air (because of the moisture) and larger salt particles only reach the upper respiratory tract. Larger salt particles and too high a concentration of salt can also irritate the mucus membranes in the airways.
The concentration of dry salt aerosol is maintained by this little red sensor. It picks up the concentration of particles in the air, and switches the grinder and fan of the machine on and off to keep it at the correct level.
These tiny particles, ground to the right size, and used at the right concentration, can treat a myriad of equine health problems. Initially used for racehorses and horses suffering from respiratory problems, it was soon discovered that it also helped with skin conditions such as sweet itch, mud fever, ringworm, rain scald, and more. It can even be used to assist healing of wounds, and recovery post-surgery.

✨🐴 This is a typical salt therapy session with Nemo, an Irish sport horse gelding with COPD. 🐴✨
Each session is 20 minutes long. We need an enclosed space, which can be a stable with a top door, or a trailer or horsebox. See comments for pictures of some set-ups. We also need a power supply, but don't worry, we bring our big blue extension lead!
Some horses are more comfortable being loose, some are calmer with their owner at the end of the leadrope to tell them it's ok to ju...st stand.
During the session, the halogenerator or "salt machine" grinds salt to a fine powder and blows it out of the white funnel at the front of the box. The concentration of salt particles (or dry salt aerosol/DSA) in the air is measured by a sensor, which then switches the machine on and off to regulate the dose delivered to the horse.
The salt lands on the coat, and is inhaled. You can see here that the salt is breaking down mucus in the airways, helping clear it. Most horses get a runny nose during their treatment, and many have a good cough and snort to shift this mucus.
Nemo started out being quite suspicious of having a stranger and a funny box in his stable, but now he enjoys the benefits of this noninvasive treatment while munching his hay.
Please get in touch if you have any questions about how salt therapy works, what is involved, or how it could help your horse - we are always happy to have a chat!
