The beautiful mothering lotus mudra (hand gesture) is coordinated with the breath into a hand movement. It's a way to help us accept the many changes and the ups and downs we may go through during pregnancy and as we transition into motherhood.
Just one of the hand mudras we practice in our pregnancy yoga classes.

POSITIONS FOR LABOUR AND BIRTH
Being in different positions during labour can really help you feel more comfortable, help baby into the optimal foetal position (head down into pelvis, their back in your belly) and may quicken labour. Positions which allow your body to be upright, forward and tilted over can help babies head descend down onto the cervix and come into that great position for birth. So which positions are best? ... ๐ŸŒธStanding and leaning forward against a wall or birth partner, add in hip circles and sways for some comfort during contractions. Can also try a slow dance here too. ๐ŸŒธ kneeling up and over a birth ball, chair or raised head of bed to open your pelvis and help baby down into a good position - add cushions or blankets for more comfort. ๐ŸŒธsitting on your birth ball - hips higher than knees- sway, roll around, circle hips. ๐ŸŒธ side lying on your left with top knee bent ๐ŸŒธ lunge inbetween or during contractions with one foot on a chair or stool turned out.
Don't forget to add your Birth Breathing ๐Ÿ’—
Most importantly listen to your body and work with it, knowing your baby will be born in the way that is meant for them.

What a powerful documentary; Louis Theroux Mother's on The Edge shown last night. Did you watch it?
Even Louis who normally stays pretty neutral struggled to contain his opinion that the mum's must love their babies. New motherhood is the perfect storm (as the Dr described it) for mental health issues to appear.
... If you are struggling with anxiety, stress, overwhelm or more intense feelings of self harm please do reach out to someone; partner friend, gp, health visitor, family for support.

If you've given birth at the PRH in the last 6 months do consider filling in this questionnaire about the care you received.

Another great article from Evidence Based Birth which focuses on the evidence for birthing position for the second stage of labour which is when the cervix is completely dilated and baby is born.
Most of us know about active birth and staying upright through labour which helps baby into the optimal foetal position, allows the pelvis to expand and tailbone move back and gravity to send baby in the right direction.
This article explores the various studies done on birthing posi...tions and the benefits and risks of upright and supine positions.
Biggest take home for me was birthing in a supported side lying position may reduce length of active pushing, the rate of episiotomy and the use of forceps or vacuum when an epidural was given. Especially useful when change of position happened during the passive phase (fully dilated but before pushing) of second labour.
