About Medway Council Stray Dog Service

Can you offer a new & loving home to one of our stray dogs? If you recognise any of our dogs as your own then please get in touch ASAP. The council operates a collection only service for stray dogs over the weekend.

Medway Council Stray Dog Service Description

There are many reasons a dog ends up wandering the streets, sometimes it’s simply accidental and they’ve escaped from their owners, other times it can be more sinister as dogs are deliberately abandoned.

One of the reasons why we are called to collect strays could be linked to owners finding it increasingly difficult financially to look after their pet.

Thankfully an increasing amount of dogs are returned to their owners each year because they are microchipped.

You may not know it, but the council can offer you free microchipping for your pet – giving you complete piece of mind should it go missing.

When we are unable to trace owners through a microchip, the future may not be as bright.

Once picked up by community wardens, they spend a week in the care of the council.

If the owner is still not traced or doesn’t come forward to claim their dog, the council then becomes responsible for the pet and will try and find it a loving home or rescue space. We also run a dog foster care scheme, this helps avoid undue kennel stress and can make a dog easier to rehome.

If an owner can’t be found or there are health or behavioural issues , the dog sadly has to be put to sleep as a last measure.

That’s a situation nobody wants to see.
