ANXIETY. A feeling of fear quite often associated with something that doesnŌĆÖt actually pose a real threat. It can escalate in intensity to a level we call a panic attack where your heart races and it can be difficult to breath. A dental anxiety is unfortunately very common and prevents a portion of the population from visiting the dentist even when they are in pain. Here are some steps to follow if you are one of these people: 1) accept and allow the anxious feeling, fighting... it will only make it stronger. 2) make the phone call to your dentist and book your initial visit. 3) talk to your dentist about your anxiety. 4) avoid caffeine on the day of your visit and drink plenty of water. 5) discuss any specific causes of anxiety with your dentist and work out a plan of action. Eg. Fear of injections could be eased by holding the syringe and feeling in control, practising breathing techniques, topical numbing gels to ease the feeling of the injection etc. 6) practice mindfulness based meditation. Nurse Anna with her friend Mr Croc on a recent visit to the local preschool group. During this visit we discussed the importance of brushing their teeth and some helpful and fun instruction on how best to brush, we also went through some good and bad foods with them and then they all had a practice on Mr Croc. November is fast approaching which means mouth cancer awareness month. In aid of supporting Mouth cancer awareness we at Oaktree will be raffling off a brand new colgate electric toothbrush, all proceeds will be going to the chairty that organises the event. We will also be organising some more exciting things through the month of November so stay tuned for more information.
The most imortant message we want to get across to everyone is please 'if in doubt get it checked out'. Hi everyone, this Friday at Oaktree we are excited to announce we are hosting a Macmillan coffee morning! With the help of our wonderful team here at Oaktree we will be providing cakes and other delicious baked goods as well as tea and coffee to anyone who would be kind enough to drop in to donate to the fabulous charity Macmillan cancer research. Had a tooth out yesterday, felt a little light headed afterwards (was in a rush in the morning and hadn't had enough to eat), the staff were very professional and let me wait around until I felt better and then later in the day called me up to make sure I was alright.
