This Atoll is not one you may have heard of or seen. Thilafushi is the Maldives waste management solution. Where mixed waste and plastics rot and burn and emit a thick toxic sludge into the surrounding waters🥤🔥🏝 -
With over 1million tourists visiting a year, these beautiful Atolls simply do not have the infr...astructure or waste management policies to keep up with the average holiday makers 3.5kgs (per person) of rubbish they produce a day and so Thilafushi has been on fire for over 20 years in a bid to handle this waste🤦🏼‍♀️😢 -
Examples like this, where regions have limited infrastructure, technology and resources are exactly why we created OP1. As if that statistic isn’t shocking enough, if you consider it alongside the fact 17million barrels of oil per year are used to make the bottles and that it takes twice as much water than what is in the bottle to actually make it, surely the conclusion is that they make no sense. 🥤❌ -

What an interesting read the UK’s Climate Change Report makes 📖🤔 -
Reducing the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050 is apparently “necessary, affordable and desirable”. Setting the target will be their easy bit we imagine. -
... The element that confuses us the most is regarding electric cars and electrified heating. If they imagine diesel and petrol vehicles and gas central heating to be a distant memory, as they are superseded by electric options, where are the thinking electricity comes from? ⚡️🤔 -
Currently the production of electricity ranks number 1 on the top 10 climate change villains list at 30% , where as transportation (current methods) is only at 14%. 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏻‍♂️ -
We love their plan to plant more 🌲s as they aim to convert a fifth of all farmland to tree planting. But where are all the new crops going for the planned increase in plant based diets in light of the 20% reduction in animal consumption ?🐄 🐑 🥛 -

Whilst @qantas impressed us earlier this month with their commitment to replace single use items with sustainable alternatives by the end of next year @etihadairways have taken it to the next level and on 22nd April (Earth Day in mind) were the first major airline to make a long haul flight with no single use plastic on board 🥤❌👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 -
They utilised blankets made from recycled plastic bottles and edible wafer coffee cups. Where suitable replacements could not be sourced, th...e items were not loaded. In this exercise they have discovered they can remove 27million single use plastic lids alone. -

Qantas has pledged to replace 45 million plastic cups, 30 million cutlery sets, 21 million coffee cups and 4 million headrest covers with sustainable alternatives by the end of 2020 👏🏻👌🏻🇦🇺 This Australian carrier has already removed plastic wrapping from headsets, blankets and pyjamas and replaced plastic straws with paper ones.

Anyone else confused with what goes in what bin? What you can recycle, what you can’t? What to compost, how to compost? and what to do with new ‘biodegradable‘ single use items ?🤷🏼‍♀️🤔 FYI Vegware/ biodegradable single use items decompose anaerobically producing methane making it much more ‘damaging’ than a regular coffee cup if it ends up in general waste and thus land fill. 🤦🏼‍♀️ They are not compostable in a home compost / food bin but only in commercial facilities, which... very few Councils offer ....so where do we throw them 🤷🏼‍♀️ - Sometimes even with best intentions, solutions to existing problems create new ones. 🌍🙏🏻 - The USP of the OP system is that it deals with all waste, negating the need for complex separation processes and giving it a second life as a valuable resource and commodity. - Together we can can change our habits and be part of the solution 🥤❌🌊🌍💙 #innovation #wastetoenergy #revalue #oceanconservation #cleanourocean #bepartofthesolution #bigbluemovement #passonplastic
