Good Morning all, well it must be marathon training season as seems to be so many people out running at all times of the day. Its cold and wet at times but remember whatever sport you do stay hydrated and do stretch, especially on the day after sport its so important for injury prevention. I see many injuries preventable with the correct stretching. If anyone wants any advice at any time you can always message or send me an e mail.

Well with June well among us and the weather greatly varying, we all need to be aware of dehydration and cramping. I often get asked, " Why do I get cramp in my legs at night?" There are several reasons but most commonly among sports people is dehydration and lack of trace elements in our system when going bed. It is believed that about 75%! of the population go to bed dehydrated. So try to drink more fluids throughout the day and evening. The most Important elements to preve...nt Cramping are Sodium chloride, (table salt, celery, potatoes, beetroot and canned fish) Potassium (bananas, sweet potato, dried apricots), Calcium (cheese, milk, yogurt white beans and spinach) and Magnesium (most whole grains, peanuts, cashews); all available from electrolyte drinks or even in tablet form. However and essentially, a good balanced diet as well. If you have any queries or questions do let me know and I will try to reply as soon as possible. Enjoy the warmer weather without suffering!

Well its just 3 days to go to the London marathon and I will be there all day as a volunteer Marshall for the Kids mini marathon and then the main Marathon at about 23 miles. Its going to be warm so do remember if you are running the marathon or doing some sport at the weekend to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen and a hat/cap. Don't be to concerned about drinking to much (hyponatremia) you are far more likely not to take on enough. Pouring water over the face also helps to cool the body. If you start feeling thirsty then you really should of taken on fluid earlier so do it straight away, and re-hydrate well after. Good Luck to all the competitors and especially to all my patients running, we have manged to get you all to the start line, rehab can be hard work, but it does pay off.

Clive has enjoyed the winter Olympics so much he has taken up a new sport.

Looking forward to warmer days but if you are training outside at the moment, keep the extremities warm and remember you still need hydration . I see a lot of injuries due to lack of warming up and stretching afterwards. Enjoy but be careful out there.

Busy as ever in the clinic lots of sports injuries and also work related disorders. These are often a build up of poor posture at the desk. Sitting twisted and slumping in the work chair all contribute to back and neck pain. Remember every 20-30 mins to stand and stretch and sit back down with good posture, keeping the lumbar spine supported and not rounded in the shoulders. Make sure your work station is ergonomically set up for you.

So, Dry January didn't quite work out and the gym membership is a bit of a white elephant. No worries! It's a brand new month, the days are getting longer and hopefully warmer. Just a short walk a couple of times a week is a good start to being fitter. Any questions before starting exercise for the first time or after injury. Call 01582 454397 or e-mail me at admin@physiofit.uk.com and will be happy to help 😀

I see a great variety of injuries but especially runners at this time of year training for London amongst others. Injuries can often be easily avoided, I have seen 3 injuries this week related to poor footwear. Please remember trainers last 6 months or 500 miles and never put them in the washing Machine! They lose their cushioning over time and straight away if washed.
