The Reading Society of Model Engineers established 100 years ago. Based at Prospect Park, 'Public Running' days are on the first Sunday of every month. We have a Young Engineers club and we cover a limited number of birthday parties (pre-booked)
Prospect Park Railway - Reading Society Of Model Engineers Description
The Reading Society of Model Engineers was established 100 years ago with the purpose of allowing individuals, who enjoy building and operating models of engines and machinery, to share their combined interest. Since then the club has moved from strength to strength and has now been based at our present home in Prospect park for over 40 years.
The society encompasses a large number of interests, being equally involved in the construction and operation of model railways as well as the construction of live steam locomotives, clocks, IC engines and all manner of other scale equipment
We have 'Public Running' days on the first Sunday of each month together with some Bank Holidays. Trains will be on track for rides at the times shown in the Future Events box. (may be varied in adverse weather conditions).
Birthday parties are really popular and get booked well in advance. See section on Birthday Parties for information, availability and reservation arrangements for that very special day

REMINDER FOR SPECIAL NEEDS AFTERNOON
Tomorrow, Monday 18th February, we shall welcome all those with special needs and their families / supporters along to our railway for some train rides. As the usual track is out of use, we shall be on the ground level railway and the lovely big club steam locomotive has been prepared to be running with other diesel(s) . Plenty of free car parking (entrance off Bath Road) and refreshments available as always. From 13:30 till around 16:00; no pre-booking needed.
Engines are getting prepared in the sunshine ! We intend to be on track by 1 PM

We're certainly hoping that our coaches will all be in action on Sunday, as the weather prediction looks ok although 'chilly' . Rides at 60p each or TEN for £5; plenty of hot drinks will be ready !
WELCOME TO 2019
Firstly, many thanks to all of you who came along to see Santa, the Saturday rain just did not put anyone off ! All of the lovely comments over the weekend and those on our email and facebook sites were very much appreciated, thank you. Now it's on to our first Public Running day of 2019 on Sunday, when we shall be there to welcome everyone again with plenty of train rides and refreshments. Tickets still 60p each or 10 for £5. Just one of our cheerful drivers in the rain on Santa Saturday is seen in the photograph !
SEASONS GREETINGS TO EVERYONE
Many thanks to all who came to our Santa event and made it such a great success again. We hope you all enjoyed it , even with the challenging weather on Saturday ! From all of us at the railway, enjoy the next few days and we wish everyone a happy and successful 2019.
SANTA AT THE WEEKEND
The whole weekend with us is for the visit of Santa. The pre-purchased tickets were all sold out very quickly soon after release at the end of September and we're looking forward to seeing everyone with those tickets.
We have an eye on the weather; cold and maybe a bit damp, so hats, coats and scarves needed !!
... Please use OUR CAR PARK entrance on the Bath Road and do take care as there will be lots of traffic movement throughout the weekend.
So...refreshments, train rides and SANTA, excitement building.. and for those on the 11am zone, arrive when you want, steam engines will be getting ready by 10am so plenty to see.

TRAINS ARE READY FOR SUNDAY
It looks as though we shall have some fine weather tomorrow for our last public running day of 2018. Trains should be on track for around 1pm and run until just before dusk . We hope to see you all for some rides and a cuppa; still 60p a ride or ten rides for £5.
THE LEAVES ARE HERE AGAIN !!
But we've cleared them sufficiently to let out trains run again on Sunday afternoon from around 1pm. You are all welcome to come along for some rides and refreshments, although don't leave it too late because it gets dark early !! Rides remain at 60p each or 10 for £5......bargain !! In the meantime, watch out for fireworks tonight.
WE'RE READY FOR TODAY
After some challenging weather on Saturday, we have a much better forecast for us today. The site is taking on an autumn look, but the trains will cheer it up and we'll be glad to see you all come along for some rides and the usual 'cuppa' Trains should be on track by around 1pm. Each ride 60p or 10 rides for £5.
PLANNING AHEAD FOR 15th / 16th DECEMBER
Once again, we shall be having a visit from the favourite in red and white and children will be able to meet him and say what they would love to have on the 25th ! They will receive an age related present and unlimited train rides. Accompanying families are included for the rides and there is a mince pie / hot drink for two adults. OUR PRE SCHOOL TRAINS TODAY
Yes; most schools are about to open again, childrens' summer holidays are nearly over ! ! . But we should have trains on the track for 1 o'clock for some more rides in what looks like beautiful weather all through the day. Engines have been cleaned and ready to go; rides continue at 60p each or 10 for £5.00 Refreshments available. See you later.
BANK HOLIDAY RUNNING AND OTHER EVENTS
We hope to have our trains running on Monday weather permitting and they should be on track by 1pm. Tickets continue at 10 rides for £5 or individual ride at 60p. Refreshments as usual. We shall then look to our Special Needs afternoon on Friday followed by another public event on Sunday 2nd September before school time starts again !! We look forward to seeing you .

INTRODUCING OUR NEW CARRIAGE NUMBER 5
It's been eight weeks in the making, but finishing touches were added on Wednesday to Number 5 and it is now off the table and ready for action on Sunday. Yes, Sunday 3rd June; it's our Public Running afternoon, and we shall have some trains on track by around 12:30. You are all very welcome to come along with the children for some train rides, when very warm weather is forecast.
TANKS AHEAD
Following on from a splendid sunny afternoon on Sunday when our trains for the public running were kept very busy, we turn our attention to this coming weekend. Everyone is welcome to come along to a display of model tanks ( and a few model traction engines ) which are being brought in by members of the Tank Club and public. No charge or booking. 11am till 4pm both days and if anyone else has a model to bring, please let us know (message/phone)
SUPER POWER
We struck lucky with the weather on Sunday and thank you to all who came along to share it with us. The two 'Baldwin' locos provided plenty of power on one of the trains. Now, on to Friday with more good weather promised for us to provide entertainment for those with special needs. Trains will be on track by 1.30pm .. we look forward to seeing you.
A FEW DAYS MAKES THE DIFFERENCE
On the same day as the Half Marathon was snowed off, so were our parties ! But now, we're ready to go tomorrow, Sunday 1st April and it looks as though we shall be ok with the weather for our Public Running afternoon. You are all welcome, but care needed in the 'watered' car park. fantastic afternoon yesterday celebrating our Girlguiding rainbows district 30th birthday party, lots of happy little red people and adult leaders. amazing guys, the girls' had a wonderful afternoon. Would highly recommend for parties. Thank you again.
We had simply the most amazing time here for a birthday party. Volunteers were amazing and we had a blissful time enjoying ourselves with the engines and rides. Thoroughly recommend and will definitely be seeing you all again soon.
We had our sons 5th birthday party here today. Peter & the train drivers were fantastic. Very organised & happy to go with the flow. Facilities were great. My son and I got to drive one of the trains which was a nice surprise. All the kids had a ball as did the grown ups. Thank you.

There were some children (and parents!) who would happily have ridden your trains all day. You'd thought of everything, and the gazebo and train-seat-drying service by Peter was especially welcome! Little hidden gem.....my son and his daddy loved the whole afternoon of steamies yesterday and we also went for the first time to the Special needs event the previous week. Friendly and knowledgable staff, great little tuck shop and brilliant value for money train rides at 60p per person. Will definitely be back again.
Just had our 7 year old sons party here. He and 19 friends had a wonderful time and a big thank you to all the team to making this such a wonderful and enjoyable event. We did think initially that a 2 1/2 hour party might be too long, but we were certainly wrong. The kids and 'big kids' kept wanting more and more rides round and the time just flew past. The room was nicely laid out with plenty of space for the party tea. The provided tablecloths, tea, coffee and squash were more than adequate.
What was nice was that the team were keen to explain and demonstrate what was going on behind the scenes before the train running got under way.
All the kids left very happy and the adults too were pleased to have discovered the railway, so there might well be a few extra bookings coming down the line.
Would highly recommend and already our younger son wants his party there next year.
Once again thank you for all your efforts and making it a super day.
Just had my sons 3rd birthday party hear, cannot recommend highly enough, such a forgotten gem. Even with the snow and cold temperatures the people that ran it for us were so brilliant and friendly. The really toasty room with tea's coffee's and squashes already laid out was brilliant. A massive thank you for braving the cold !
I was one of the Big Kids attending Mike Stumps sons party. It was really great and everyone had a good time. Because there is so much space it doesn't seem like there's 20 children around and they all queue up so well waiting for their turn to have train rides. My thanks to the volunteers who made the day run so smoothly.
Had my sons 4th birthday party at the train club in March and he had a fantastic time as did all his friends, including the mum's and dads! It was really well organised and all the guys who volunteer were very friendly and welcoming. Would highly recommend it for birthday parties, something different. They also hold public running which my son loves to go to as well. A hidden gem.
Had my son's 3rd party here and was a amazing experience for him and all his friends. Volunteers were lovely and friendly, and had endless hot drinks and biscuits for parents plus squash for children. Everyone had a fab time even the grown ups! �
Had an amazing 4th birthday party for my son who is obsessed with trains. Brilliant couldn't ask for better staff with the trains and the day as a whole. Very accomodating very fun and friendly place for a party. My son got to drive the train which made his party. Thank you to all staff for making it a wonderful day. Also weather was lush that day xx
Had a very pleasant afternoon at the railway for there January public running day. What a delightful little place. Plenty of trains, a welcoming atmosphere and hot drinks aplenty to ward off the chill of the weather. Great club, well worth a visit!!
Fantastic little people party venue. Our three year old son and his guests had an amazing time. Club house worked out great for sit down meal. Only difficultly was persuading kids to part with trains for 1/2 hour. Staff/club volunteers were great - very friendly and only too happy to help. Our only regret was having too much fun and not remembering to taking more photos!

Staff are brilliant, they provided the hot drinks and squash for adults and children (there were a LOT of us), two and a half hours of unlimited rides on the trains and use of food hall which comfortably sat 24 children and they had set up the tables and chairs for us, along with seating and tables outside. Great value for money and such such good fun for both the children and adults. I highly recommend this wonderful place to celebrate a birthday.
Absolutely fantastic and affordable day out for the kids!! The tracks are long and go all around the site, and the locomotives go really fast! So much fun. Very friendly crew, they'll happily answer any questions and are even happy to let kids blow the whistle! Also fantastic club house with model trains, tea and snacks. Thank you RSME!

Just had my sons 3rd birthday party hear, cannot recommend highly enough, such a forgotten gem. Even with the snow and cold temperatures the people that ran it for us were so brilliant and friendly. The really toasty room with tea's coffee's and squashes already laid out was brilliant. A massive thank you for braving the cold !
I was one of the Big Kids attending Mike Stumps sons party. It was really great and everyone had a good time. Because there is so much space it doesn't seem like there's 20 children around and they all queue up so well waiting for their turn to have train rides. My thanks to the volunteers who made the day run so smoothly.
Had my sons 4th birthday party at the train club in March and he had a fantastic time as did all his friends, including the mum's and dads! It was really well organised and all the guys who volunteer were very friendly and welcoming. Would highly recommend it for birthday parties, something different. They also hold public running which my son loves to go to as well. A hidden gem.
Had my son's 3rd party here and was a amazing experience for him and all his friends. Volunteers were lovely and friendly, and had endless hot drinks and biscuits for parents plus squash for children. Everyone had a fab time even the grown ups! �
Had an amazing 4th birthday party for my son who is obsessed with trains. Brilliant couldn't ask for better staff with the trains and the day as a whole. Very accomodating very fun and friendly place for a party. My son got to drive the train which made his party. Thank you to all staff for making it a wonderful day. Also weather was lush that day xx
Had a very pleasant afternoon at the railway for there January public running day. What a delightful little place. Plenty of trains, a welcoming atmosphere and hot drinks aplenty to ward off the chill of the weather. Great club, well worth a visit!!
Fantastic little people party venue. Our three year old son and his guests had an amazing time. Club house worked out great for sit down meal. Only difficultly was persuading kids to part with trains for 1/2 hour. Staff/club volunteers were great - very friendly and only too happy to help. Our only regret was having too much fun and not remembering to taking more photos!

Celebrated my son’s 5th birthday here! Absolutely amazing! Staff are brilliant, they provided the hot drinks and squash for adults and children (there were a LOT of us), two and a half hours of unlimited rides on the trains and use of food hall which comfortably sat 24 children and they had set up the tables and chairs for us, along with seating and tables outside. Great value for money and such such good fun for both the children and adults. I highly recommend this wonderful place to celebrate a birthday.
Absolutely fantastic and affordable day out for the kids!! The tracks are long and go all around the site, and the locomotives go really fast! So much fun. Very friendly crew, they'll happily answer any questions and are even happy to let kids blow the whistle! Also fantastic club house with model trains, tea and snacks. Thank you RSME!
