Well done to our onsite Macmillan cancer support and information centre staff and volunteers who ran a very yummy coffee morning last Friday raising over £1,700 for Macmillan. Thanks to our staff, volunteers and local people who popped in for a cuppa and a cake.

Congratulations to our facial palsy team who shared their expertise at the inaugural Facial Therapy Specialists Conference this week in Birmingham. Co-hosted by our extended scope practitioner in facial palsy, Catriona (pictured centre), our consultants, therapists and psychological therapist all delivered talks to a room full of delegates from the UK, Ireland, France, Belgium, Germany and the US! As we run the UK's first and largest facial palsy service, treating patients across the country, this was a great opportunity to share our expertise and network with other like-minded professionals. Well done everyone!

Our peanut children's ward team recently received this feedback from a parent which we wanted to share with you: "Wonderful staff, friendly and informative. Excellent facilities for my son, put him at ease and made the whole experience less stressful." #MondayMotivation

As it's national eye health week our consultant ophthalmologist and cornea surgeon, Samer Hamada, shares some top tips for looking after your eyes:
Eat a healthy and varied diet. Good eye foods include carrots, pumpkin and sweet potato (beta-carotene); oily fish and flaxseed (Omega-3 fatty acids); kale, spinach, spring greens and eggs (Lutein); berries, broccoli and citrus fruits (Vitamin C); and almonds, avocados and kiwifruit (Vitamin E).
Rest your eyes. Try doing the 20/20.../20 rule throughout the day; every 20 minutes look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
Don’t let your eyes dry out.
Protect your eyes - wearing sunglasses all year round is good for your eyes (and the right pair can make you look quite fashionable!)
Have regular eye checks.

We're delighted to announce that actor Jack Ashton, best known for playing Rev. Tom Hereward in the BBC television series, Call the Midwife, has given his support to our charity - QVH Charity! Talking of his role Jack said: “I’m excited to give my support to QVH Charity to help them continue to raise money to support the hospital by funding ground breaking research, providing equipment not routinely funded by the NHS, and make sure patients have the best possible experience of hospital.” Find out more about this exciting appointment here https://www.qvh.nhs.uk/…/actor-jack-ash ton-becomes-hospita…/

Did you know we have an onsite Macmillan cancer support and information centre? It's purpose is to ensure people affected by cancer, and their friends/relatives, have access to good quality, comprehensive and appropriate information and support. The service is available to anyone affected by cancer, not just QVH patients.
And this Friday the team is holding its annual Macmillan coffee morning from 10am-2pm in the "Surgeon’s Mess" here at the hospital and all are invited. If you're free why not join us for coffee, cake, savoury goodies and a raffle?

User

Did you know the average time a patient waited to be treated in our minor injuries unit last month was only 26 minutes? Our team of emergency practitioners can see, diagnose and treat a range of injuries and ailments. Can we save you a trip to A&E? Find out more about the unit here: http://ow.ly/t7kK30lUVbv Open 8am-8pm, 365 days a year.

Last weekend QVH Charity supporter and super cyclist Mike Gwynn completed an epic cycling challenge from Land's End to John O'Groats (980 miles!) to help raise funds for our facial palsy service. Despite what he calls "relentless hills" totalling 52,000 feet to climb, he completed the Ride Across Britain and has raised just over £2,000! Find out more about why he took on the challenge and how it went here http://ow.ly/TU4130lUTuy
Thank you to Mike and everyone who has sponsored him so far. There's still time to donate if you'd like to at http://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/mic hael-gwynn2

Planning some weekend DIY? Do you have the correct materials as well as safety equipment? Our burns team treat 40-50 people a year with burns caused by cement - something you perhaps wouldn't expect to be as harmful as other sources of burns. Makes you think doesn't it? #BeBurnsAware #DIYSafely

We're always looking at ways to reduce our impact on the environment and one of the recent switches we've made is on our peanut ward which is now a plastic straw free zone. The team has also introduced recycled paper for all its admin and letters so if you receive any correspondence through the post please don't be alarmed if it's a little grey in colour - it's just the team helping to save the planet one straw and sheet of paper at a time! #70ThingsQVHIsproudOf

We aspire to always putting each patient at the centre of what we do so it's lovely to receive feedback like this about our Margaret Duncombe ward which we wanted to share with you. "I have been given wonderful advice to aid my recovery. Within this team there is an ethos of care in sometimes quite difficult circumstances. I have observed that the team all care for each other and work very much as a team. The patient and their needs always come first."

User

It’s not just surgeons who can do fine stitching here at QVH. Staff and and friends of the hospital are proud and excited to be working with textile artist Jamie “Mr X Stitch” Chalmers to decorate the Standen Christmas tree this year! Find out more here http://ow.ly/1evO30lQHGD

Our consultant ophthalmic and glaucoma surgeon, Gokulan Ratnarajan (pictured centre), won the prize for best paper at the prestigious International Congress for Glaucoma Surgery in Montreal - the biggest global meeting for glaucoma surgery! We're proud of all of our team who present their work and research both here and abroad, and are especially chuffed when they win a prize. Well done Gok! #70ThingsQVHIsProudOf

When Elaine first walked through our doors in the 1970s to visit a friend who was a patient, little did she know that years later she’d be back and also start a family trend! Our hospital is such an important part of the local community and also across the South East that it's not difficult to find someone who works or has worked here, has been a patient here, or knows someone who has. Find out more about why Emily and Elaine think QVH is a great place to work http://ow.ly/yaKr30lOZlj #70ThingsQVHIsProudOf

According to figures from the UK Sepsis Trust sepsis affects more than 250,000 people every year in the UK. It's a deadly reaction to infection which can lead to multiple organ failure and death. It's vital that it is detected quickly. Would you know how to spot it though? Please take just a couple of minutes to read these helpful graphics from the UK Sepsis Trust - it could really be life saving information. #WorldSepsisDay

User

If you're passing the front of our hospital soon you might spot something new - our lovely recruitment banners. Featuring pictures of our staff we want to encourage local people (and those further afield) to consider QVH as a place to work. We've a variety of permanent or bank (temp) opportunities in clinical and non-clinical roles so if you'd like to know more why not email the team at qvh.joinourteam@nhs.net

Continuing on our quest of #70ThingsQVHIsproudOf we couldn't forget our lovely hospital grounds and of course the expertise of our dynamic gardening duo. Come rain or shine (thankfully today is the latter!) you'll find them tending to our grounds to make them inviting for patients, visitors and staff. We get such lovely feedback for how pretty the hospital is - and how clever they are when it comes to things like this topiary Spitfire plane! We hope our grounds make you proud too.

We’ve visited QVH, as patients and parents, on many occasions, and have always left QVH feeling proud of our NHS system. The fantastic care can be experienced in Minors, X-Ray, Physio, and in the last few days, Peanut Ward and Theatres.

With our 10 year old son being admitted to Peanut Ward early Friday morning for orthodontic surgery, being warmly welcomed by a lovely lady receptionist gave a lasting first impression of Peanut Ward. Following that welcome, was the incredible care of Peanut Ward nurses, shown to us all. Despite being under great pressure at all moments of the day, nurses helped our son through a very difficult time. In Theatres, the care continued. His Recovery nurse was so very lovely and was clearly so great at her job.

Thank you to you all. You’re amazing, and a credit to QVH, and the NHS.

User

User

Thank you so much for all your care and concern for our son who was recently in QVH (7/6-13/6/18)for surgery to correct a problem on his leg stump. Nothing but praise for your care, the welcome by all the staff, the attention in helping him find the pain relief he needed and the food he delighted in showing us which other hospitals just have to aspire to! Nothing but praise as a visitor and I know our son was more than grateful for all your kindness. Well done and absolutely no faults found!

User

My son who is 9 and I visited the PAU and Peanut Ward on Wednesday 21 March 2018 to have a small lesion removed from his shoulder.

User

I would like to thank all the staff at the hospital today 15.6.18 for taking such great care of our precious Elodie. She needed to be put under anaesthetic for stitches to a nasty cut just above her eye. From start to finish the service we received was amazing, a superb welcome from the outpatients trauma team, thorough information & great dedication from the doctors and anaesthetists giving us such reassurance she was in safe hands, and fantastic after care from the recovery and peanut ward teams who truly made our experience comfortable and stress free. End result our daughter is back, running around already as if it never happened like the little soldier she is. And she’s named her bear “peanut”! Thank you all so much 👌💕😀

User

I went to the MIU on Sunday after injuring myself. I saw a lady called Gill who was absolutely fantastic! She knew everything she was doing and was so professional! Gill cleaned up my wounds and gave me antibiotics for an infection in my hands. I then had to come back the following day where Gill cleaned up my wounds again and dressed me in iodine. I was so happy with the care I got and have to say QVH has amazing staff!!!!!!! Thank you ever so much

User

I went to Minor Injuries on Tuesday 20 February with a burn to my face. I was in a terrible way and worried about my face. I was met by the receptionist Nicky who welcomed me and gave me reassurance that I would be seen by a nurse in the unit. My details were taken by Nicky who was a very calm first face to be welcomed by in the unit. Within 5 minutes I was seen by Gill the on call nurse. She was very gentle when looking at my burn and understood my concerns about any possible scarring. Gill took photos of the burns and sent them to the burns unit very quickly to check weather or not I needed to be checked in the burns unit. She put on some vaseline and gave me the tube to take home. The care I received was without fault even though the staff were working without toilets in the unit or running water. Many thanks for the great service.

User

I was in the childrens ward on and of from 1965 till early 70s with 3rd degree burns to one of my hands got very badly burnt by a electric bar fire lets just say a bit of a mess

They managed to fix things up quite good considering the extent of what had happened they saved all my fingers and thumb and have all the feeling and movement in my hand which they thought would not happen theonlythngis i don't have the span

As i have all that most people dont even realise that my hand has been burnt

I consider myself very lucky i am a builder by trade and can do most things on site i also drive heavy machinery from 360 diggers/dumpert and telehandlers

I also ride motorbikes a hobby i love

If it wasnt for the great surgical team and nurses at QVH i may have lost my hand

Always as been and hopefully always will be a pioneer in surgical procedures and development

User

I was here 3 months ago with a swelling on my face and the Margret duncombe ward were very helpful gave me pain killers when needed and also got me back to normal thank you to all the nurses

I sprained my knee really badly and went to the MIU on Sunday 28th January. My husband went into the MIU and asked for a wheelchair for me because I literally couldn't move. After the initial check-in and a short wait, I was assessed by the head nurse Gill. Both my husband and I were amazed by her professionalism, her calmness, her caring attitude, sense of fun (judged because my husband I were laughing at my yelping in pain). She took my temperature and was worried because it was a little high. She checked my sprained need thoroughly, and worried about my high temperature, in case it was sepsis. She was convinced it was a sprain, but sent me for an Xray, they were also very kind and caring. My husband wheeled me back to the MIU, over a bump I squealed in pain, so when the doors opened, Gill said, I knew it was you coming back. She had checked my Xray, and gave wonderful advice on how to look after the sprained knee once we got home. She showed me how to use the crutches, then made sure I had a go, so I knew how to use them, as I've never had crutches before. My knee is slowly getting better thanks to Gill. I know it is her job, but when it is done so well, so thoroughly and so professionally with a bit of humour added, it was a horrible experience made all the better for her. Can you please thank her from us, we were so impressed with her. The NHS is amazing service thanks to people like Gill.

User

I reluctantly had to use the minor injury unit last night. The reception, doctor and X-ray guy where all fantastic and very kind. I didn't think you could have a nice experience at a hospital until now. Thank you to all involved.

User

I have had several procedures carried out and had lots of hand therapy so far in this small but excellent hospital and wouldn't want to be treated anywhere else for these conditions. Living near Maidstone the journey to East Grinstead takes well over an hour each way but it's worth every mile. I know that the care I receive from the medical staff at the QVH will be second to none. Everyone I've come across, from reception staff to the highly skilled consultants and surgeons who explain everything in terms I understand, really are some of the nicest people I have ever met in the NHS.

Maybe its the compactness of the QVH as opposed to the large and impersonal general hospitals that you can lose yourself in that makes the difference, or the wartime historic atmosphere of the place with evocative names of the older buildings like the Spitfire Restaurant or the Hurricane cafe. But whatever it is, the Queen Victoria Hospital is a true centre of excellence.

User

I had to take my little girl here last year to remove skin tags when she was just under 2 months old. I was so anxious and really reluctant to get it done as she was so little. The staff were amazing, the surgeon was so quick and really good with my little one, she barely noticed what was happening and the nurse was amazing! She even gave me a hug before and after to calm me down. If your baby or child needs a procedure here they really will be in good hands.

User

I am so impressed with the QVH Maxfax and Orthodontic teams. I had double jaw surgery two weeks ago and my life has already been transformed by the result. I am in awe of the skill of my surgeon, Ken Sneddon and the brilliance of my orthodontists Lindsay Winchester and Mary Yates who have got me to where I am now. I truly cannot thank you all enough.

User

Had to be ‘on the other side’ Sunday following a ‘footie accident’ and I can’t thank the Maxillo-Facial team enough. Having worked here for the past 23 years, I know we have the best staff ever, but I want to give a special shout out to Sharda, Mandy, Pam and Mike, who over 2 days ensured I received the most professional and caring treatment.....thank you so much my wonderful colleagues

User

An exceptional hospital with incredible staff - especially in Orthodontics. Miss Winchester and Mr Sneddon and their teams are amazing. We’ve been coming here for 6 years and the staff are incredible - knowledgeable, highly skilled, professional, warm, kind, friendly and reassuring.

User

An amazing team of people. Did everything they could to make me feel comfortable and less of an idiot for putting my finger in the blender. Very quick to see me and get me patched up. Wonderful people. Ha j you so much.

User

An absolutely amazing hospital been there for my daughters cleft palate repair and all follow ups many years ago along with ENT and visited minor injuries on several occasions with my children, a burn, broken bone, very bad cuts that required maxillofacial to assist along with a number of other injuries and although sometimes the wait has been long the care has always been fantastic and I couldn't praise the staff enough. I'm incredibly lucky to have this facility right on my doorstep.

User

Absolutely wonderful care of our Grandaughter Dahlia today on peanut ward. Thank you so much for everything. X x x

User

Wanted to thank Martin Jones and his amazing team, the anaesthetic team, the recovery team and all the nurses on the Margaret Duncombe Ward for their excellent care making my patient experience a happy one.

The whole process was extremely well organised. Every single member of the team we encountered was amazing - so kind, caring, professional, competent and they all explained everything thoroughly and put my son totally at ease as well as me. I cannot thank you all enough.

I have already called in personally to thank everyone and completed the telephone survey.
