Summer preparations for our Pharmacy students gathered pace last week as they strolled to a convincing football victory against the staff. With temperatures reaching upwards of 25°C, a depleted staff team took to the pitch looking to build on recent successes. Staff preparations had not gone according to plan with late call offs through injury in key positions. Dr Cottrell aka Felix the Cat, Dr Bizley aka The Terminator and Professor Stephens aka Midfield Dynamo were huge los...ses to the team, but those that turned up were certainly capable of holding their own (for five minutes at least!)
As the game kicked off, the tempo reached fever pitch and the staff knew this was going to be a long, drawn out physical and mental battle. The students quickly adapted their game plan to find holes in the staff’s defensive strategy. It wasn’t long before the students made a breakthrough, as some clever tippy-tappy left the staff chasing shadows and a clinical finish put the students in the lead. The game continued in a one-sided manner up until half time. The staff regrouped and, despite losing Dr Al-Obaidi through injury, felt that if they could score at least once then this could mark a comeback reminiscent of Liverpool in Istanbul. Dr Lewis must have been listening and scored a wondergoal that deceived the student goalkeeper, who looked more shocked that the ball had come his way than anything else! This goal could have led to great things…but it did not. The students soon had the upper hand again in the second half and scored a few more goals (and then a few more). The staff willed the final whistle to blow and when it did it was a massive relief.
The score in the end was irrelevant as it was all in aid of Parkinson’s UK (http://bit.ly/2ENu537), but staff training will need to improve for next year’s clash.
Well done to the students, and to the staff for letting the students win………
