Rochester Quakers

About Rochester Quakers

Rochester Meeting is part of "The Religious Society of Friends", aka Quakers.
We worship every Sunday at 10: 30. All, Quakers or not, are most welcome!

Rochester Quakers Description

Although we have our roots in Christianity, we find meaning and value in the teachings and insights of other faiths and traditions.

We do not share a fixed set of beliefs and you do not need to be a Quaker to share the silence with us at one of our meetings.

Quakers believe our faith is lived through action. We work positively and creatively with others to build a more just and peaceful world.

Quakers are committed to equality. We share responsibility for our work and worship and our life together without traditional structures or paid clergy.

If you are interested and /or would like to know more about Quakers or how meetings for worship work, please do get in touch! We would be delighted to answer any questions.

Our exhibition and refreshments in the Meeting House on October 7th, just before we welcomed visitors and heard a talk about New England Quakers. Note the white poppies.

I read about this in The Friend. It takes place at Horsham meeting house. I hope there will be more of these in future!

I urge you to let your mp know your horror at what the government is doing.

Fancy a sing along? At Yearly Meeting Gathering we heard about the following:
The Leaveners (1976-2016) 'Endings and Beginnings' 2.00pm to 5.00pm Saturday 14 October 2017 at Friends House, London.
... A celebration of 40 years of song, theatre and music-making, and also the launching of 'The Singing Quakers' encouraging local choirs to evolve throughout the Society and 'Quaker Music Network' - opportunities for instrumental players to join together.
Everyone welcome. Free. Confirm if coming - email alec.davison@btinternet.com

On September 2nd Daya Kans and her team opened the first permanent Hindu Temple in Manor Road, Gravesend. This is a historical day and comes after many years of having to share space. One of our members Annie attended. We would like to wish them well on their spiritual journey, may it be blessing to many others.

The University of Warwick has been the venue for Yearly Meeting Gathering which is drawing to a close today. Quakers from the UK and across the globe have come together for business sessions in the Butterworth Hall, and across the campus there have been sessions on dance, singing, poetry, craft, discussion and information on Quaker activities in the UK and worldwide. This event has been a wonderful opportunity to connect with one another, build a community and find replenishment on all levels.

Three people from our meeting are attending Yearly Meeting Gathering at Warwick University; Amanda, Anne and Angela. We are finding the week nurturing, inspiring, overwhelming and enlightening. The theme is how we live our Quaker lives today focussing on using our heart, head, hands and feet as tools for change.

Once a month on a Tuesday evening we have a Meeting for Worship in a member's home in Gravesend. Last night 13 of us came together for a Meeting, followed by a discussion and tea and biscuits. This is a nice opportunity enjoy a peaceful Quaker silence but also to get to know one another better.
If you'd like to join us sometimes and are not already on our mailing list, just email Angela Davies and ask to be added.

Careful listening is fundamental to helping each other; it goes beyond finding out about needs and becomes part of meeting them. Some would say that it is the single most useful thing that we can do.
