1. Avoid winter weight gain - In the colder months it is so easy to turn to comfort food, because its so satisfying and it makes us feel good, well for a little anyway, and then we feel guilty. Its so easy to become a hibernating bear! No wonder it’s known as the ‘winter weight gain’ period. The average person puts on up to 4 kg! The only way to make up for those added treats is to increase the amount of exercise you’re doing. Try and balance your energy in and energy out the...n the shredding of clothes in spring wont be such a shock!
2. Keep warm - Save electricity and an expanding waistline by heating your body up naturally with a workout. The rise in your body temperature, during a work out, has a soothing, calming effect on your body, not unlike a long soak in a warm bath or lying in front of the heater.
3. Stay healthy - Research has shown time and again that regular exercise strengthens your immune system so it can fight off bacterial and viral infections. This becomes particularly important in winter when colds and flu rear their ugly heads.
4. Beat the winter blues - Whether it’s the usual winter blues or the more serious SAD (seasonal affective disorder) putting a gloom over the colder months. A daily workout releases feel-good, de-stress brain chemicals, gives you a break from the daily grind and helps ease depression.
5. Detox your lungs - being cooped up with nothing but your central heating to keep the air moving means fresh air is much harder to come by in winter! Exercising gives your lungs a chance to breathe more deeply detox.
6. Be social - Try a new group fitness class, or workout with your buddies. It's more fun, and increases your chances of reaching your goals. It's a great way to keep you motivated. Exercise with someone around the same fitness level as you so you can spur each other on.

You've now managed to do what most gyms do and push all the weights down one end. Congratulation in turning a really good refurb it a total waste of time. My wife uses the weight racks and has even said it would push her to look for another health club.

Congratulation.

Addition to original comment:- Racks have now been moved into the plant room for storage?? All bumper plates moved to a dangerous position between 2 machines. Only a time before someone gets hurt in Roko.

After the comment about the issue of the floor load, it seems ok to flip a 100kg tyre from one and to another.

Building Control and the council would not allow you to build a mezzanine floor in a gym without carrying out a structural assessment on the load.

User

Yes I only done a weeks trial .. i like the relaxed feeling.. not intimidating .. yea happy all round

User

Would suggest this place to Anyone! Staff very polite!

User

So so happy with all the new equipment and how well planned the gym floor is looking Too many classes to choose from now it's brilliant. As an ex member of two local gyms its third time lucky for me. Been a member for 4 years and this is where I can totally chill out. SO much so that I don't want to leave sometimes....just about says it all . Happy Days

User

Recently joined the club and love it!! Classes are great and the instructors are motivating and help me reach my goal. Definitely would recommend the club to anyone!

User

Really enjoy this gym.. staff are really friendly and there is so much on offer with the spa and restaurant. Much better then cheaper gyms in the area.

User

One of the best gyms I have been too! Literally everyone is so friendly! Plenty of equipment to use! And lots of space! Excellent classes!! Great swimming pool sauna steam room and jacuzzi area!! Xxx

User

My wife and I have only been going to Roko for 3 weeks. On an average of 3 days a week. To be honest I'm not sure what all the complaints are about with the moving of barbell's and weight lifting equipment around the gym. We're more than happy at the layout but I can see what the long term members are coming from. We all get used to where certain exercise equipment is in the gym, when it's moved or stored away it is very annoying.

I'll see what happens within the next 6 months or so. If it doesn't come up to our expectations then we will not renew our membership for next year. Until then, I will give 5 star's simple because we haven't been disappointed yet.

User

Me and my wife have been training there just gone 3 weeks now and we're loving it. Staff are very friendly and very helpful. Good range of cardio machines, weight machines, free weights and basically anything else needed to get in shape. Does tend to get a little busy in the evenings but as I've said there's more than enough equipment to go round. I'd definitely recommend to others

User

Love it here. Become my second home! Made some great friends here and instructors here are some if the best. Amazing timetable of classes and great equipment

User

Last night I had my 21st party at roko! It was amazing, set out beautiful, staff amazing, reasonably priced drinks! Excellent venue so so happy

User

I spent my first day here today. I moved here from a "posh" gym mainly because I needed more free weights. This gym has lots of equipment which is perfect for my training. I then headed for the spa not expecting much but was really surprised by the outstanding quality of the steam room, sauna, jacuzzi and pool. It is by far a lot better than my previous "posh spa gym". I would highly recommend this gym.

User

I enjoy all the pilates, yoga classes. Whilst using gym too. The spa area and changing rooms are always spotlessly clean and I thoroughly enjoy my commitment to staying fit and healthy.

User

I don't use the gym. But the spa side is great. Thank you guys for a lovely day. Would be nice if you only done a membership for swimming pool.

User

Great staff fantastic equipment just a great place to get yourself fit wifey and I love it

User

Generally I’m not known for my ability to be pampered! However after a neck, shoulder & back massage I can truly appreciate the therapeutic benefits and felt so relaxed afterwards. I will definitely be back

User

Enjoyed my first visit. Had a class and went on treadmill. Theres a lot to choose

From. Gym, spa, sauna, pool and many classes. Also theres a Costa there.

User

Brilliant x excellent Gym facilities, good choice of classes, and the Spa treatments to die for, highly recommended.

User

After losing my wife of fifty years to a brain tumour in February and sitting indoors just watching the TV, I joined the gym and it has given me a new lease of life, it’s not just the exercise but the whole social aspect at Roko and watching how hard all the girls work is a real inspiration to me and makes me feel less than my age!

User

Absolutely love Roko. Staff are always friendly and helpful. Classes are great and the timetable is absolutely jam packed with a variety of classes for everyone. Best gym i have ever belonged to

User

Very clean and we'll laid out .only thing lacking is a water dispenser in the sauna /steam room area

User

Love my Pilates with Lou and Nicola Kidney, great class with candlelight Thursday gone. Relaxed and I never feel intimidated being of a certain age as I have done in other health clubs.

User

I've been a member of this gym for over ten years and have seen them make many changes some for the better and some for the worse. But I am pleased to say that if you're unhappy then they do listen to you and value your opinions. I would definitely recommend this gym to everyone.

User

Been going to ROKO for about 9 years. Have seen the equipment change & improve. Sad to see Fitlinxx go & struggle with Internet connection there & now my iPhone won't play my music, but it used to.

Always something needs repairing, usually jacuzzi, sauna or steam. Now it's the sauna door constantly rattling & the swimsuit spinner in the ladies hasn't worked all week. Not good enough for the amount charged per month! But on the whole, I enjoy it & have seen big improvements with gym equipment.

User

Xmas party last nite cold in there and not impressed bar staff wrong drinks glasses etc

User

Too many kids swimming lessons on Saturdays means I can't do my hydrotherapy. Jacuzzi is quite frequently out of action for maintenance. Opening at 8am on a Saturday is rubbish as well. Why can't it open at 0630 like Monday to Friday?

User

I've been going to Roko for 9 years now and have been happy. Especially when they started getting more free weights and squat racks, so us ladies didn't have to go to the men's weight area, which can be really intimidating, so it was really nice to work out without the stress, but now someone has decided to take them all back to the men's area for some reason and their definitely not thinking of all the ladies. I think if it doesn't change I'll be having a look across the road when that opens.

I am glad to say that after talking to Roko they have put all the weights and squat rack back to where it was and we can all use it without any hassle. So I'm a very happy gym member

User

Well joined the gym well before Xmas after going 3 times had an accident and till June did not go .so been paying the gym for nothing.and not even one single phone call to see why I have not been there.however sent my daughter to cancel the gym they quickly phoned me not to ask why but to show them a letter from my doctor that I can't do gym.what a joke.

This Is ROKO In GILLINGHAM.have to go to hospital roko is the last thing on my mind? Get a life.

User

Men's toilets are disgusting, no locks on doors... tables and chairs in costa area need a clean... having to brush popcorn and other stuff of the chairs before can sit down... members of staff just standing around chatting by costa

User

I’ve been a member for a year - had to have a break and have been back in the past three weeks. To say it is looking tatty and tired and unclean is an understatement. Just today:

Jacuzzi ‘closed for maintenance’ - third time in three weeks.

Steam room closed for the next two weeks - after having been out of operation for at least three days on and off over the past three weeks

One shower cubicle closed for maintenance - 3rd week. Another shower cubicle, no rack to put shower gel bottles etc in.

One rowing machine out of order due to battery run out - like that for 3 days

Men’s toilets - one cubicle has a pile of toilet paper left on top of the dispenser, the other the roll is rolling around on the floor. No one can be bothered to fill the dispensers clearly

Drinking fountain on gym floor out of order - has been for two weeks now

New shower gel in the dispensers is like a mixture of washing up liquid and acid - pretty much unusable unless you’re looking for dermabrasion during a shower.

Left a comment card on Monday with contact details and reporting all of the above asking someone to call - it’s Friday now, still waiting for a call.

Makes me wonder how much The Avenue gym over the road has hit Roko’s business and whether there is drastic cost cutting going on. I’m calling The Avenue now.........

User

I love Roko! I really do. The classes are great, and so are the instructors. Why only two stars then? Sadly the air conditioning is so sub-standard and noticeably bad for a "premium" gym I really can't give it any higher. I've been a member for a few years and it always goes wrong (or it's more noticeably worse) in the warmer summer months. This affects the quality of your workout if you are feeling uncomfortably hot when working out. After all, everyone could get non air-conditioned workouts in community venues. As for the stench of sweaty classes when you walk in after another class. EUGH! Its sadly like the old school gym; although even some school gyms are more air conditioned than Roko now. Whilst a new lounge area will be nice, its such a shame that a premium gym is more interested in investing money in its secondary business (the coffee shop and lounge area) than its primary business of being a premium gym. I look forward to the day when the management sorts out the air-conditioning properly, once and for all, so that it works every day of the year.

User

Been a member for a while now 2nd stint and the spa which is what I use the most has something out of action on a regular basis usually the steam room or jacuzzi or sometimes the sauna but last night I went there needing to chill out after a hard day and the jacuzzi and steam room both out of action phoned today to be fold it should have been fixed but wasn't, I don't think I will be renewing my membership again it seems very frequently things are not working same for machines in the gym and u can get gym membership for 30% of the cost elsewhere

Come on roko get your act together

User

When you join they skim over the fact you have to give THREE MONTHS notice to leave. I paid more to have a 6 month contract as was unsure if a knee injury would flare up. However I would have needed to decide after only 3 months if I wanted to continue. I ended up paying for 9 months. Of which 5 I did not use due to knee. It's actually not that nice of a gym for the price either.

User

Can't believe new management have made a decision to move all Olympic bars from the huge open space so we can't train effectively or safely as we have to cram into the free weights area that the men use when. Nice to be informed about the changes and what a great way to make lots of dedicated members happy!

User

At this moment in time it sucks that I have now had to get up this early to book for next weeks classes when I only finished work at 01.30!!!!! Going back to when it opened!!!!! Put more classes on as if I don't book this early I end up anything from 7-14th on waiting list

User

After the refurbishment I'm angered that Roko have moved the free standing squat racks into the main weights area, stopping members being able to do a circuit. What's added to my anger even more is, rather than listen to your members (the people who aid in the running of the gym) you have done the complete opposite ans antagonised us by putting up a sign and locking them in a cupboard, I forgot we weren't at school anymore!? Very poor Roko! Clearly the new manager has never worked out or understands what is needed in a gym! Do your homework and listen to your members!!!!

User

After attending this gym for almost a year, using the free weights, training with my son on the Olympic lifting I have been informed that the use of barbell weights have now been banned, apparently this is due to floor stress! Surly a risk assessment was carried out prior to these being implemented in the first instance, if so what has changed? If the assessment wasn't carried out then surly someone hasn't carried out their duty of care. I know that this will not get s reply just like the complaint I made about the way my son was spoken to by a senior manager some weeks ago, i do not think my family membership will be Renewed, I can just about tolerate the spar out of service on frequent occasions and the substandard showers, but this is the final straw. I will not recommend this gym to any of my friends anymore!

A very unhappy customer!

User

Absolutely disgusted. After a week of moving the freestanding racks into the weights area, they have now been "locked away so we can't move them". This means that we can now not complete workout set by personal trainers at Roko due to not physically being able to fit mixes or mats into the weights area.

When explaining his to the manager he said he "agrees with us and there's nothing he can say".

Yet again wasted another morning of not being able to do the workout we wanted. Will 100% be leaving if this is not sorted within the next few days. Fed up of being treated like children. Was the perfect gym until a couple of weeks ago and it's now ruined my morning every day since.

User

You've now managed to do what most gyms do and push all the weights down one end. Congratulation in turning a really good refurb it a total waste of time. My wife uses the weight racks and has even said it would push her to look for another health club.

Nice to be informed about the changes and what a great way to make lots of dedicated members happy!

At this moment in time it sucks that I have now had to get up this early to book for next weeks classes when I only finished work at 01.30!!!!! Going back to when it opened!!!!! Put more classes on as if I don't book this early I end up anything from 7-14th on waiting list
