New parents across Reading and West Berkshire are being urged to take part in a global baby bonding initiative.
As part of the Kangaroo-athon, healthcare teams are encouraging new mothers and fathers to record the hours of Kangaroo care they give their babies during the month of May.
Kangaroo care is skin to skin contact between parent and baby and has been shown to deepen the bond whilst keeping the baby warm and calm and cutting the risk of infection.
... Teams from the Royal Berkshire Maternity Hospital, Community Midwifery, Health Visitors along with local voluntary organisations including Maternity Voices, The Breastfeeding Network (BfN) and the National Childbirth Trust (NCT) are helping support this fun event.
Local parents are being encouraged to count the hours of Kangaroo care over a 24 hour period, starting from 14:00 on Friday 10th until 14:00 on Saturday 11th May, and post their pictures and times on the RBH Maternity Facebook page - Royal Berkshire RBFT Maternity.
Claire Carter, the RBH’s Infant Feeding Lead, said: “we joined the Kangaroo-athon last year and it was a big hit with new parents and also with the staff here. Kangaroo mother care originated in South America where it was shown that kangaroo style skin- to-skin cuddling can have enormous benefits. It boosts brain development and immunity in babies and also plays a vital role in the bonding process.
“It’s also a lot of fun and is important for new mums and dads to have this special time with their new babies,” she added.
Parents keen to get involved can find more details on Facebook at Royal Berkshire RBFT Maternity.

Juliette Ward, Rainbow Midwife Specialist at the Royal Berks has won a prestigious national midwifery award for going above and beyond in the care and support she provides for families who experience pregnancy loss.
The Mariposa Trust, the national charity that provides services and support for people who have lost children at any stage of pregnancy, at birth, or in infancy, presented Juliette with the coveted Archie Award at a special ceremony in London on Saturday 6th April... 2019.
In partnership with actress Kym Marsh, one of the charity's Ambassadors, the Archie Award is in memory of her son who sadly passed away during pregnancy. The award is for a midwife who has gone above and beyond in the level of care they have provided.
On receiving the award Juliette said: “It is a huge honour to receive the Archie Award - especially this year which marks Archie's 10th birthday. When parents suffer the tragedy and heartbreak of baby loss it is important that they receive the best possible care and support not only during this very difficult time but also throughout any future pregnancies.”
The Rainbow service at the Trust was launched in October 2018 after members of the maternity team worked alongside parents to understand the unique challenges bereaved parents experience in a new pregnancy. The Rainbow Clinic Team offers tailored specialist antenatal support in pregnancies after loss and has been developed with parents at the heart of the service. I am proud to work as part of a team that is not only committed to offering the very latest medical expertise and knowledge but also kind, compassionate, family-centred care.

A special piece of artwork has been given pride of place at the Royal Berkshire Hospital thanks to the artistic talents of local school children.
Pupils from St Joseph’s College, Reading, created the oil painted panels, which all feature hot air balloons, and it’s now adorning the walls of the radiology department, brightening up the visits for patients having ultrasound scans.
Earlier this week the youngsters, from St Joseph’s prep and secondary classes, visited radiology to... hand over the artwork, which is made up of 18 individual pictures, and help staff hang it in the waiting area.
The pupils decided to create the artwork for the Royal Berkshire Hospital because their school is a close neighbour and some of the youngsters have attended the hospital for scans. They wanted to create the artwork to showcase their talents and brighten up the space for patients.
Sarah Heaton Lead Sonographer at the Royal Berkshire Foundation Trust, said: “we have worked closely with the students at St Joseph’s College on a previous project for our paediatric scan room. It has been a pleasure to see the results of this project as the students chose the theme themselves so it was a complete surprise. We have had a lot of positive feedback from both our patients and staff. It has made a real difference and greatly improved our waiting area.
Mrs Gillian Bailey, Head of Art at St Joseph’s College: "The pupils were so happy to see their work up in a public space. It really made them feel like professional artists. It was also fantastic to see their artwork in the corridors of the hospital - we got to see an exhibition we were not expecting!
“Our close links with the hospital tie in with our school’s commitment to wellbeing and this was recognised in the Times Educational Supplement Independent School Awards who shortlisted us for their Wellbeing Initiative of the Year 2019.
The links between teachers, parents, pupils and our wider community, including the RBH and the staff there, form a partnership that prioritises the wellbeing of each child. We understand how important it is to have the right support and encouragement during all stages of a pupil’s education. The College ethos encourages everyone to develop responsibility and to care for those around them,” she added.

A local power cut has caused our IT system to fail. While we are working to resolve the problem, we are asking non-emergency patients to seek alternative health services.
We have a robust process in place and patient safety is our priority.

I was admitted in Sonning ward last July 3 for an operation and I received the best service from all of the staff, especially from the best anaesthetist and from my surgeon. A big thank and well done to all of you who looked after me.

Great staff, professional, polite, friendly and all have gone out of their way to make us feel welcome however please can someone fix the buzzer to the door for Buscot Ward so I don't have to disturb the Midwives who are busy in the nurseries to walk 2 minutes down the corridor to let me in to see my boys! Thank you!

User

Sort your parking out! When the car park is full, stop letting people in. The resulting stress turns people into morons who drive like lunatics and park where there isn’t a parking space which resulted in me being blocked in for three hours so far! I’m still here....
