We will be changing our exhibitions over in just a couple of weeks.
It's your last chance to visit our WW1 exhibition. The exhibition talks about the fantastic ongoing Archives project to learn more about the men from Sandwich who fought and lost their lives. It also talks about the act of commemoration.
The Court Room is also playing host to our There but Not There figurines and our soldier made of poppies.
... Don't miss this exhibition before it closes!

As we are well into the season of works Christmas parties we thought this photo, donated to us earlier this year, is a great depiction of a works outing.
The East Kent Brewery was based in Sandwich during the late 19th century and the nearside passenger is thought to be a Mr Symmonds, possibly the manager at the time that this photograph was taken.
Why there is a clown on the front of the car we can only guess!

We are delighted to announce that our World War One exhibition has opened today in the Court Room and will run until the end of January.
The exhibition is about the fantastic project that is in process by the Archives volunteers researching those servicemen who lost their lives from Sandwich (funded by the HLF) and also exploring the importance of memorial and commemoration and the ways in which this is expressed.
We are also hosting a figure made of poppies and There but No...t There silhouettes to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War.
We are open as usual Wednesday-Sunday 10.00-16.00 and entry is free.

Last week we went to visit our Fire Appliances at the fantastic Dover Transport Museum. They recently had a wheel makeover with the spokes being repaired after they were damaged by historic woodworm!
We also indulged in a slice of delicious cake from their onsite cafe and had a great tour from their knowledgeable and enthusiastic volunteer team.
We would recommend a visit to see the fire appliances and also the treasure trove of historic travel which can be found at the muse...um. This weekend is one of our favourite weekends of the year!
Heritage Open Days is a national scheme which encourages museums, heritage sites and historic buildings which aren't normally open to the public to open their doors for free on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th September.
As the museum is already free to enter we will be providing free craft activities for children.
... There will also be tours of the Guildhalls historic rooms at 11.00 and 14.00 each day of the weekend and meeting in the Guildhall entrance hall. These are held on a first come first serve basis.
We hope to see some of you there.

St Bartholomew's Chapel in Sandwich is a must see! This 11th century hospice provided shelter for the elderly and poor of Sandwich, in return they would work on the fields and the upkeep of the so it could serve as a place to stay for pilgrims travelling to the shrine of Thomas Becket.
Much of the money used to build the chapel on this site was from ransoms in relation to the Battle of Sandwich in 1217. To commemorate this, every year on St Bartholomew's Day, local children r...un around the chapel and given a bun which is specially baked and marked for the occasion. This is supposedly one of the oldest annual traditions to take place in this country.
The Bun Run is taking place on 24th August at 12pm and all are welcome to join in.
Tours of the chapel are also on offer to the public and can be booked through Sandwich Tourist Office on 01304 617565.

We popped in briefly while visiting Sandwich and the volunteers were very friendly and took plenty of time to talk to my husband who is fascinated by places/things related to the justice system.

User

Very good set up! Been following the Facebook site , visited the museum must go again soon

An excellent little museum full of fascinating items. Everyone in Sandwich should go and look round and see their history at first hand, and visitors to the town would see all about where they are.

User

A tardis of a museum, I could happily spend hours there and I do.

A gem not to be missed on a visit to the historic town of Sandwich. There is a wealth of information and nicely presented displays of artefacts.

The old court house is interesting too like stepping back in time. Used I believe for weddings now.

A bit eerie as I guess many a man or woman would have been sentenced to the gallows in this court in medieval times.

The volunteer curators of this museum are all friendly and knowledgeable wanting to make your visit special.

Thoroughly recommend
