Sculpture By The Lakes Description
Described as one of the most beautiful and unique sculpture parks in the United Kingdom, Sculpture by the Lakes marries the soft beauty of nature’s wild river landscape with the more formal presentation of monumental outdoor sculpture. It is that combination of art and landscape that inspires Sculpture by the Lakes. Whether it is work on a monumental scale that relates to its environment, or smaller works, the sculptures of Simon Gudgeon are prefectly placed in the delicately nurtured natural landscape to visually enhance their surroundings.
The effect is a balance, a harmony of form and context where the experience is central. Without walls, without interpretation, each person can engage with the art and the ever-changing environment.
Through light-handed management we keep our impact on the natural environment to a minimum, creating dramatic planting rooms and views within that environment to frame sculptures and place them in unexpected settings.
Like all of nature, this is a landscape that is constantly evolving and we are continually experimenting both sculpturally and in our planting and design. Apart from a few more mature trees, we started from scratch only three years ago so many of the trees and shrubs are still very young. We hope you enjoy exploring and although there are paths throughout the park there is no set trail to follow so we encourage you to take your time to search out the hidden gems.

FRUIT TREE PRUNING WORKSHOP with Thomas Stone MCI Hort MPGA
Saturday 26th January 2019 10.30am - 3.30pm
Making sure your fruit trees are fruitful and healthy depends so much on the correct type of pruning, and done at the right time of year. In this one-day workshop we will be looking at the tools required for pruning and how to look after them, pruning cuts and angles will be explained and more importantly the different types of wood that the fruit trees produce. After lunch... we will go out and take a look at the practical aspects of pruning on the fruit trees that grow in the garden at Sculpture by the Lakes.
Thomas Stone has been gardening since leaving school in 1989. Based in Hampshire, he is a creative, seasoned and innovative horticultural expert with specialism across roses, shrubs, pruning, gardens and wildflowers. Starting as a YT student at Mottisfont Abbey Gardens, Thomas went on to join The Sir Harold Hillier gardens, returning to Mottisfont a few years later where he advanced to acting head gardener. As Head Gardener he has also redeveloped private gardens in West Sussex and Hampshire. A member of the Professional Gardeners Association, Thomas is now a freelance horticulturist specialising in roses, pruning, including topiary, border care and wildlife gardening.

SILVER JEWELLERY MAKING FOR BEGINNERS with Kathryn Arbon
2nd February 2019 10.30am - 4.30pm
On this one-day course you will get a feel for what it is like to work with silver. You will use silver sheet and wire to form shapes for pendants, bangles and rings, and also learn about soldering, adding texture to silver and using the piercing saw to cut out your designs. By the end of the day, you will have a finished piece of jewellery to wear and enjoy.
... Tutor Kathryn Arbon has been designing and making jewellery for twenty years. For the majority of that time she was resident jeweller at Walford Mill Crafts in Wimborne. Now having settled in West Dorset she is focusing on teaching and developing new collections of jewellery.
The cost of this one-day course is £100 and includes lunch and tea/coffee. There will be an additional charge for materials of approximately £20 - £40 and this will be paid directly to the tutor on the day.
This course can be booked in conjunction with the second Silver Ring and Bangle workshop on 2nd March for the discounted price of £180 for both.

... Looking at traditional techniques of making a full-size tassel for interior decoration, learning basic techniques such as how to roll a wooden mould with cord, cover it with yarn and include ‘stripings’.
