Shinkendo UK would like to congratulate everyone who successfully tested yesterday. You're a credit to your martial art.
Special credit to Yasmin Orme, and Toby Benton for achieving your first instructors rank.

It typically takes around 2 weeks to forge a Japanese Samurai Sword. This time period includes the actual forging of the katana from a selection of steel called tamahagne, the preparing of the various steels used in the lamination process, and the final heat treatment process. Once made, the Sword is sent for polishing, which can take a further 2 weeks to complete. The forging process can be expedited, but under current Japanese law, a forger (tosho) is limited to making no more than 2 swords (daito) per month.

You may have heard it said that all Japanese martial arts originate in the sword. This is true given that the primary weapon of choice in battle was the sword, with unarmed techniques being fall back techniques used in the event that the individual's sword was either lost or broken. To fully understand Japanese martial arts, it is imperative for the practitioner to study to sword.
This is in contrast to Karate, which was an Okinawan martial art, not a Japanese martial art.

Unfortunately the historical art of Daito-Ryu Aikijujutsu is all but lost to the modern practitioner. The rise and dominance of Ueshiba Style Aikido has unfortunately diluted the original school into obscurity.
It is difficult to find anyone who can show us what the original school looked like. However, attached is a clip of Takeda Tokimune, descendent of Takeda Sokaku, demonstrating the Hiden Mokuroku.

Originally a complete newbie to martial arts, I have enjoyed training in shinkendo and aikibujutsu immensely. The tuition is of a high calibre and the friendly social atmosphere is what keeps me coming back each week. Recommended!

I started training in Shinkendo and Aikijujutsu at the beginning of 2016, having previously trained in Lau Gar/Wing Chun kung fu and traditional aikido (before taking an extended break and allowing myself to become seriously unfit and inflexible!). I find both Shinkendo and Aikijujutsu with Shepherd Sensei and the other instructors really enjoyable, the classes are always good fun (but hard work!) and there's always a friendly atmosphere. I particularly enjoy the practical emphasis on the Aikijujutsu training!
