About Stonor Park & Gardens

Stonor Park & Gardens - Home of the Stonor Family for over 850 Years - A Great Family Day Out in the Chilterns an hour from London

Stonor Park & Gardens Description

Welcome to Stonor - one of England’s oldest manor houses, situated in one of the most beautiful settings, owned by the same family for over 850 years. Recently listed as number 7 on Visit Britain's list of the Top 25 most magnificent stately homes and manor houses and now home to Wonder Woods, the fantastic new adventure play park.

The house contains a remarkable collection of portraits, beautiful stained glass, old Master Drawings, European Bronzes, an early 19th century wallpaper of Paris.

The House, Chapel, Stonor Pantry Restaurant and Gift Shop are open on Sundays from April until the end of September, and some additional days during high season. Please see website for opening times. Wonder Woods, Stonor's fantastic new adventure play area is open from Wednesday to Sunday each week from March until the end of October as is the adjacent Chilterns Pit Stop Cafe which also offers a stopping point for walkers and cyclists exploring the Chilterns.

The park, with its famous herd of fallow deer, is also open by way of a public footpath throughout the year, from where there are stunning views of both the house and surrounding countryside. The footpath is part of both The Chilterns Way and Shakespeare's Way.

Stonor is closely associated with St. Edmund Campion, martyred in 1581. He was a Londoner, and a leading Oxford academic of the day, ordained a Catholic Priest and Jesuit on the Continent who had answered the call of the Pope to volunteer to work on 'The English Mission'.

Already known to the Stonor family, he was given refuge here in 1581 to print in the greatest secrecy a pamphlet describing 'Ten Reasons' why the historical Catholic faith should be preferred over the teachings of the newly Established Church. The rooms used to print this work can be seen, along with an exhibition describing St. Edmund Campion's life and death.

What a fantastic day out. We stumbled across this amazing gem of a place by accident today and are so pleased we did. The grounds and house are stunningly beautiful and everything is so clean and well maintained (even the toilets!). The children had a ball playing in the Wonder Woods and we were able to sit back, relax and enjoy the sun in blissful surroundings. The Easter egg hunt was genius and enabled us to walk around the beautiful gardens whilst the children were kept occupied looking for the clues. Every member of staff we came into contact with was polite, courteous and very friendly and the cream tea was gorgeous. Well worth the entrance fee and we will certainly be back again!!!

We visited this place in 2000, while we were living in London for the year. We drove out onto the country roads and actually found the place. They were having an Open House that day and there were many people there. We met the Lord Camoys himself and he and his wife were very gracious. We saw where the famous Edmund Campion was "holed up" during the priest-hunter days of the English Reformation. So much history and the fascinating story of the recusants. We hope that we can visit again sometime when we take another trip to England and meet the Lord and Lady, who wouldn't remember us. It is a beautiful house and chapel and grounds.

We visited this home after visiting a Christmas fair. You need to allow 1 1/2 hours to look round. I was enchanted by the staging of this home and loved the festive floral arrangements.

Really super!

Great day out. My daughter loved the wonder woods, such a clever thought out design with enough to entertain all day. Gardens are great too. It would be good if the house and the pantry opened earlier as 12 and 1.30 are quite late if you get there first thing. Will definately be back.

A stunning house in the most beautiful setting. Well worth a visit!

User

A beautiful house with a lot of history -- amazing to see how the family and house survived the anti-Catholic period in England. The rooms are all beautiful and unique, and there are several paintings by well-known artists (Van Dyke, Rubens, etc.). There are volunteers dotted around the house who are so lovely to chat with and answer questions. The gardens are lovely to walk around and sit in. There is also a nice children's playground -- admittedly I went on the zip line, and it was fun!

Overall would highly recommend a visit, great way to spend the afternoon!

Over priced!!! We paid £18 for 2 adults and 2yr old to basically walk round a small garden and play on a park which is almost identified to a free park near us. House, chapel, shop and cafe were all shut. Yes there was water pumps and sand in your park but so many parks offer this for free. A whole section of the garden was closed off due to the rain we have had, while I appreciate you can’t control the weather you can change your prices accordingly.

You may claim that your prices are in line with other stately homes but you aren’t offering the same experience as them or the same scale. We are national trust members and visit many stately homes and can say we were truly disappoint with what was on offer today. I am also amazed that your cafe and shop are hardly ever open.

On the other hand my 2 yr old loved the Easter trail and you do have a beautiful place to show off. The staff in your visitor centre were lovely and very welcoming and you possibly have the best and cleanest public loos I have ever been in . I think you just need to consider offering winter prices when you can’t offer as much as you can in the summer.

We will come again in the summer when more is happening and hope to have a better review to give.

Went to stoner thought it was rip of 6 rooms for 12 pounds and a cold tearoom called the pantry which again was not cheap thought we were paying for the family's Christmas
