Corinn (first picture) has been volunteering with us for 3 months now and has helped us in many different areas within the house and garden. We asked Corrin; "What do you think, in terms of skills (or anything else valuable) volunteering with has helped you with?" "Volunteering in the house has been great for confidence and being able to talk to everyone that comes in and educate them on the house. The gardening side has been helpful for learning lots of new skills with tools, plants and general gardening processes."
We welcome everyone to apply to become a volunteer with us, email sally@sulgravemanor.org.uk and click to find out more

It's #SulgraveSelfie time for the team! Today, meet Emma
"I’m Emma, the Learning Engagement Manager here at Sulgrave Manor. A key part of my job is creating experiences for our school and family visitors which are fun, exciting and memorable. Seeing children engaged and enjoying themselves is the best part of my day!
Days at Sulgrave can vary from leading a school visit in full Tudor costume or chatting with visitors during family activities, to planning and preparing those ...experiences behind the scenes. At the moment I’m developing our school learning programme with the support of some of our fantastic visiting schools to ensure we continue to provide unforgettable learning experiences.
If I’m not at Sulgrave Manor then you’ll probably find me with my amazing Scout Troop climbing, hiking, camping or doing something else exciting!"

Located just outside our Great Hall is a selection of swords. Our Collections volunteers are keen to explore the significance of the different handles which you can see here. Sometimes it's the small details which can tell an interesting story and when looking closer it is clear that the details on these were, at the time, designed individually for a reason...

We receive visitors from all over the world as well as the farthest corners of the UK. Many are first time visitors but some are 'serial' visitors who know what a lovely place this is to relax on a sunny day. Some visitors first came on school trips and now bring their own children here! Many have read the book 'Stars of Fortune' by Cynthia Harnett about the Washington children of Sulgrave Manor and want to come and see where the action was set. We are lucky to still stock t...he novel in the shop as it is now out of print. Recently a couple of visitors brought their old copy of the Sulgrave Manor Guide Book with them. It was from 1972 and was priced at 15 pence. Our current guide book has increased slightly in price but does have the added benefit of colour photos!
Our secondhand bookshop is also open in our Brewhouse which welcomes donations too.

These 17th-century shoes are a very interesting object from our collection! The elevated section was designed to create height so that the long dresses that were worn did not get caked in mud when walking outside- clever! If you look closely, you can see a delicate floral pattern too.

Here's a look back at our orchard in July. Ever changing with the seasons, a relaxing place to be and a firm favorite with our visitors!

It's #sulgraveselfie time today from one of the team here at Sulgrave!
Hi, I’m Sally, the Visitor Services and Volunteer Manager here at Sulgrave Manor. I really enjoy getting to be a part of the way our visitors experience the manor and gardens by making sure there is lots to do for everyone who comes through our doors.
Recently we changed the way you visit by making the house open-access instead of going round with a tour guide. This little change has made a huge differen...ce and we are receiving a lot of really positive feedback from our visitors. We still offer guided tours for groups and we have had over 150 people come on guided tours this year already! A big part of my job that I really love is managing the volunteer programme here, did you know we have over 30 volunteers at Sulgrave? And that number is always growing… from house volunteers to learning and collections volunteers to our team of garden volunteers, there is always something going on!
Our volunteers here at Sulgrave play a key role in keeping Sulgrave a fantastic place to visit. We have volunteers of all ages and backgrounds and they all put a lot of effort into making Sulgrave such a great place; so great in fact, that we recently won Best Heritage Organisation 2018 at the Northamptonshire Heritage Awards – something we are very proud of!

In our series of 'Meet the Team' posts, today is the turn of Thea, our Group Bookings Manager. A tour with Thea is guaranteed to be full of fun and facts!
"I have worked at Sulgrave Manor for fourteen years, welcoming hundreds of groups and giving guided tours of this unique House and Garden. It is a delight to share the stories of the House and the Washington family while focusing on particular interests for example the American connections, the New Elizabethan Embroideries,... the fine pieces of furniture, the social history of the time and the historic garden.
A visit to Sulgrave Manor is ideal for groups as it is a small site with not too much walking involved and plenty of seating inside and out to relax and take in the atmosphere of past times, enjoy the colours and fragrances of the lovely garden and the surrounding Northamptonshire views.
The Manor is set in the village of Sulgrave and a delightful stroll to the Church adds to a whole day visit. Pre booked morning coffee, lunch, cream tea means there is no queuing and the Gift Shop is open displaying a range of gifts, cards, books and plants, grown at the Manor." bit.ly/sulgravemanorgroupvisit

South End Junior School had the most wonderful day here today. We all learned so much to introduce us to our topic of the Tudors. The staff were fantastic and extremely knowledgeable. A fantastic venue. Lots of ideas to inspire our children. Can't wait to return next year!

On behalf of myself and my husband we recently got married on 19th august 2017, at this gorgeous venue. We would like thank all the staff but especially Charlotte and Alex for their assistance in making our day so special. It was a perfect venue and we would definitely recommend it to future couples getting married.

Me, my mum and my 2 girls all went for the Santa grotto event. Fantastic!!! So well set up from booking through to leaving with staff saying goodbye with a smile. Mr and Mrs clause were absolutely fabulous my 2 year old loved them and Santa was so good with my 11month old calming her and talking to her to the point she was smiling. The arts and crafts were lovely and well laid out. The story telling was great. We had such a lovely day will definitely be back again and as soon as we can book in for next year we will be. Thank you everyone who made it a magical day xxx

User

Left it until last minute to book for the grotto and emailed a lovely lady called sarah-louise.

She responded to my emails quickly and although fully booked she emailed me later in the day to notify me of an available slot. I phoned and secured the booking and the staff were helpful.

Upon arriving we were greeted by some lovely helpful staff and directed to the craft room where my children had plenty to make and do.

We visited father Christmas and Mrs Claus and my children thought it was the best. So magically laid out and they both took plenty of time to speak to my children and not rush them out the door. They got a lovely little gift too. We will definitely be returning for future events.

I cannot rate Sulgrave Manor high enough! Our second visit to Santa here and we were not disappointed. My eldest may not have been to see santa but he still grabbed a pic with Mrs. Clause! Lovely staff, lovely activities.

I attended the psychic fayre yesterday with two of my friends. We had a look round the gardens and will definitely be going back to look around the house in the spring . If it's as beautiful on the inside as it is in the outside we will be in for a real treat.

Came for the Halloween event with my two boys and we all had a lovely time! The staff were so helpful and friendly and the gardens are beautiful and great for the kids to play in. They loved all the activities and it was nice to learn a bit about the history there. I will definitely be visiting again!

Being a born and raised Virginian who somehow ended up with someone born and raised in Northampton, the moment I found out about this place I couldn't wait to visit. Remarkably even being from there, my partner had passed Sulgrave many, many times, even noting the sign, but never investigating into what Sulgrave Manor actually was. So it was a very special moment to share between us when we came for a planned visit recently. We were not disappointed and we both learned so much! The staff was very friendly and helpful. The grounds were lovely and it was just so peaceful walking around the home, taking in the sweeping views of the countryside surrounding us. Ofcourse the home was lovely and it was wonderful to see all of the original items therein. I see us returning again sometime in the future to this treasure of Anglo-American interest.

User

We only stopped to stretch our legs, so just walked through the very pretty gardens. Impressed by the herb and flower gardens and the huge number of bees. The staff we met were friendly and informative. We'll come back to look at the house some time.
