Sussex Equine Hospital

About Sussex Equine Hospital

Sussex Equine Hospital is a dedicated equine veterinary practice in West Sussex. Our team of highly experienced vets provide care to all types of horses from children's ponies and pleasure horses to top class racehorses and international sport horses.

Sussex Equine Hospital Description

The Sussex Equine Hospital is one of the oldest dedicated equine practices in the country. It was founded in 1951 and is currently the only Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons approved Tier 3 Equine Hospital in West Sussex. From the hospital, a team of 20 experienced ambulatory veterinary surgeons provide veterinary care to all types of horse and ponies performing at all levels, from children’s ponies and pleasure horses to top class racehorses and international sport horses. The area covered extends throughout West and East Sussex, into Surrey and Hampshire, however, our vets will also travel all over the world to examine horses for purchase and the hospital will accept referrals from any part of the country.
The ambulatory vets have the back up of the hospital into which horses can be sent for more complex procedures and surgery. There is a team of vets and nurses on site 24 hours a day providing intensive care when required, as well as an on site laboratory that can process samples 7 days a week.
Many of the vets in the practice have special areas of interest, thus providing a better depth of knowledge through a team based approach to veterinary care. We aim to provide a very personal service with good continuity of care.
The Sussex Equine Hospital provides both routine and emergency care, 24 hours per day. There is even a specialist team of vets with special interest in stud medicine on call throughout the year separate to the normal out of hours rota.
Referrals are welcomed from other neighbouring practices for more complex procedures and surgery.
The practice prides itself on investment in the most modern and up-to-date equipment, as well as training of the vets within the practice, to provide the best possible veterinary care to all its equine patients.

We would like to welcome Sally Hall to the ambulatory team! Sally will be working in the East of the practice on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Sally is an experienced veterinary practitioner and has worked in Sussex as an ambulatory first and second opinion vet for 18 years. She has also spent much time providing veterinary cover at endurance rides and horse trials, a highlight of which was being the resident stable vet at Bramham. http://www.sussexequinehospital.co.uk/tea m/sally-hall/ 🐴

Keeping your horse safe in a heat wave
While this long spell of sunshine is much needed for many of us after a seemingly endless winter, we must remember that the high temperatures can quite quickly become a problem if we are not cautious. The horses we keep, in most cases will be willing, and keen to please if you ask them to do a strenuous hours schooling in the mid afternoon sun but avoiding heat stroke should be at the fore front of your mind. Heat stroke is a serious con...dition and in some cases can be fatal.
So, what should you be looking out for? • An increased temperature (greater than 41C) • Increased respiratory rate • Increased heart rate • Dry gums • A tired, quiet horse
These are just some of the first signs you will see and are not exclusive to heat stroke but should ring some alarm bells in any case. If you suspect any of these symptoms you should call your vet to have the horse checked.
Prevention is better than cure! How can you keep your horse cool? • First and foremost, be sure to time when you exercise your horse carefully, early mornings or late evenings are by far and away best. If you can only exercise them when it’s hot, keep it short and sweet and not too taxing. If possible exercise them in a shady area like woodland or even take them to the beach for a splash around! • Following exercise, a cool sponge bath will help them to cool down but don't forget to remove excess water with a sweat scraper. • Ensure they have access to fresh, clean drinking water! If they are known to be poor drinkers you can add some apple juice or offer water that has been used to soak hay or put more buckets around the stable if your horse is sensitive to sugars i.e. laminitic or has cushings. In addition, a bucket of water with electrolytes can help to reset their salt balance if they have been sweating. • Ensure your horse or pony has a shady spot to stand in if he or she wishes or put them in a cool stable to force the matter, some horses will seek the sun as some people do but remember you have their best interest at heart. • Give your horse a haircut! Removing as much as possible of your horse's coat can make all the difference. • Finally, be aware that if your horse has a pink nose he or she would appreciate some suncream. While it doesn't contribute to heat stroke it can cause problems in the long run we all know that sunburn can be really unpleasant! 🐴

The SEH was pleased to welcome a team of cardiologists to the hospital last week to help treat a difficult heart condition in one of our patients. This horse suffers from atrial fibrillation, a condition where the heart rhythm doesn’t beat correctly leaving the horses tired and lethargic. This modern treatment technique involves the placement of special coils into the heart via a blood vessel in the neck. Under a short general anaesthesic the heart is temporarily shocked, converting the rhythm back into normal. The horse recovered well from the procedure and is back home!

We received an emergency call on Tuesday morning for help with an unfortunate yearling who had slipped into a ditch overnight! She was found that morning with her yearling friend watching over her from the edge of the field. Ambulatory vet Sarah Davidson went out to the call and assisted the Fire Brigade Search & Rescue Team. The yearling was heavily sedated and had straps attached around her middle, she was then fully anaesthetised as she was un-handled, and the team were u...nable to assess her left legs for deep cuts or breaks. She was lifted and placed in a safe area of the field to recover from the short anaesthesia. She took her time coming around as she was very tired and during that time she was checked from nose to nail and was lucky enough to only have very minor injuries. After an hour she stood uneventfully, much to the relief of her yearling friend. Two days later she was doing well and just had a few scrapes to show for her adventures. Well done Sarah and the Search and Rescue team! 🐴

Do you have a mare that needs a home?
We are looking for mares that may be suitable to be used as recipient mares for embryo transfer. Ideally the mares should be between 3 and 10 years old, be healthy and have good temperament. Over 16hh would also be good.
The mares will be well cared for as they will be carrying special embryos inside!
... please contact the hospital on 01903883050

You could not wish for a better team to take care of your horse!!! The care our horse received was outstanding and we will be forever grateful for all the time and effort they all put in to caring for her. She definitely put them through some testing times. Mattie was amazing and did everything she possibly could to keep Molly alive. Thanks to her and the team we finally bought her home today after a 5 month stay! You guys are truly amazing xx

We had our pony with Arundel Equine for 21 years and prior to us having him he was still under their care. Always very special care from Pauline Williams and he did have his issues especially laterly. He always kept us in our toes but the care was always first class. He is sadly no longer with us we can never thank you all at this surgery fir your love and care to the very end. Ros and Eleni Thompson xx

The removal of the heinous erupted melanoma on my champion Connemara pony's neck was perfect. Thank you to Andy/Olly for performing the immaculate laser surgery, to Pauline Williams for her amazing support and to Helena Smith for her dedication to her job, also helping myself and Poacher get to the Hospital and home again safely. The would has scabbed over nicely and the pony has clearly been relieved by the melanoma's removal. Thank you.

Both my mares went here for AI after a disappointing time at another vets in Surrey.

Could not fault anything Paula is a great vet and kept me updated - if I had anything to pick up on I would have liked a update on how both mares and foals were, especially after one foal gained a superficial graze jumping off the ramp.

4 stars I liked it
