About The Dolphin

The Dolphin in High Street Old Portsmouth has
been revived as one of the city’s great traditional pubs. Known for its historic links with Nelson, The Dolphin dates back to 1716 and offers 6 cask ales and a unique menu which includes a Sunday lunch with famously great roast potatoes.

It has a charming courtyard garden. Inside, the
pub has characterful furnishings of some age and pictures that reflect the history of the pub and the city - and there’s not a games machine or widescreen TV in sight.

The Dolphin is dog friendly, and well behaved
dogs are always welcome. We even have a
special “doggy” menu for your four legged friend.

Lots of great evenings of entertainment coming up for you at THE DOLPHIN, Old Portsmouth's Village Pub

User

Well kept and a good range of beers. Good food as well

User

Visiting from Australia we loved this classic English pub.

User

Very nice .went in with our dog after the England game to watch Russia and Croatia . We had pizza . Steak and the best sweet potato fries we have had .The staff were friendly and our dog was watered and welcomed .

User

The Sunday Roast was awesome as was the service too. It makes a change to be able to go to a pub and have a conversation without having to listen to loud music playing in the background. I would definitely come back here again.

User

Had a great company re-union at The Dolphin on Wednesday 30th November. A massive thank you to Nathan & the team for a superb buffet and great range of beers. Looking forward to holding another event there in 2018.

User

Had a fabulous evening at the dolphin tonight at the VE celebrations, atmosphere was fantastic, food amazing. Yes a small hic-cup when there was a broken water pipe. But staff reacted quickly to this problem, even with some of our table guests getting wet but it's only water !!! And added to the atmosphere. Staff was great to deal with the problem. And "The Three Bells" performance was perfect . Thankyou dolphin for another great experience we've had with you all xx

User

As soon as we entered we knew we had the right place. It just felt right & it didn't disappoint. Lovely place. Great food and a local beer named Punter. "Yellow" was also a friendly bar man

User

Lovely pub, great staff friendly and attentive. Food was good although not great portion sizes for the price.

Only thing that let down the roast dinner was the obviously frozen Yorkshire puddings...why??

Don't let down a fab meal with them. They are tasteless rubbish!

First time..whilst at gunwharf quays...Portsmouth old town..a few good pubs

Went here last night with family ( 8 of us) to celebrate my 60th birthday, I can only think the waitress was new as she didn't appear to answer any questions...when asked what wine/ drinks do you have she shrugged her shoulders so we all just went for wine and beer!!! Should we not have been given a drinks list? asked about one of the starters and again no answer! just read what it said on the menu. Overall the food was lovely ( although small portions) and service was ok. Having spent a lot of money would have been nice to have a little interaction and to have felt welcomed.

User

Nice friendly staff, lovely clean and tidy pub, easy to book. Food was nice although the Sunday roast could have been a bit hotter. No complaints though, a nice meal and reasonable prices (everything except the steak is under a tenner). Nice location and a bit of history thrown in for free!

User

Cannot fault the building and the decoration. In such historic surroundings you would hope the service would be a wee bit more attentive. Myself and my three brothers ventured in yesterday with a view to drinking most of the afternoon and having a meal. We first sat down and had our first pints. Irving ales, so knew what we were getting .

We Looked through the menu and it was time for another pint. My brother took back the empties and stood patiently for around five minutes, there was one chap sat on a computer and no one else in attendance behind the bar.

We decided that the staff were not interested in the fact that we wanted more beer and four meals. We picked up our coats and made for the Still &. West where we had another three pints each and four meals.

Sorry but the Dolphin lost revenue for the lack of customer care.

Waited ages for food and when it finally came out was stone cold! Nice little pub but terrible service

User

So it was my brothers 20th birthday meal, we came here to enjoy a pub atmosphere while having a few drinks and some food. Was disappointed when we turned up and they didn’t even realise we had booked. They then sat us telling us it would be a half an hour wait for food. 1 hour and half later our starters turn up and then 2 hours later our mains turned up. However they did get us a free round of drink and the food was nice. Just disappointed with the costumer service

User

Shocking service today 2 June

One bar staff and one waitress

Told them we were on a time limit as one of us needed to catch a train to be told no problem at all, there wasn't a big wait on food.............

40 minutes later still no food other clientele who arrived after us were served before us

Asked how long the meal would be to be told ours was the next one out and it wasn't

We apologised why we don't know as the service was shocking

Ended up leaving without food nearly an hour later

Shame as it seemed a nice place

User

Good selection of ales, however we ordered 2 plates of Nachos to share between 6 of us when they turned up they were shocking to say the least, a small amount of grated cheese which was obviously then microwaved with a few jalapeño peppers on served with a tiny amount of salsa, guacamole & sour cream served in little paper pots!! £6.95 each

User

Called in just by chance...

They had tomato soup with basil, my favourite.

Shame I was served Heinz cream of tomato straight out of a tin :(

Good job we only ordered a starter so I'm voting with my feet ;)

User

Not the same..

Upon entry it felt cold and lifeless, but I had been before and the food was nice. I stupidly didn't ask for a high chair before I ordered. When I did ask the reply was "we only have one and it's being used", shocking.

Food came out and was so below par.

Veg tasted watery and the roast potato was awful and Yorkshire was still cold in the middle which indicates to me they were frozen..

TERRIBLE!

Facebook asked me to write a review. 😂😂😂😂😂 I'll give some tips instead.

-Get a Manager who can manage

-Train the waitress so that she knows what you expect her to do

-Try to have one or two items which are listed on the menu actually available and with all the correct accompaniments

-Try bringing the food down hot

-Don't have a go at the customer when the staff have a breakdown because she didn't know what she was doing

-Don't just give all the food and drink away because you have no idea how to settle a dispute

-Don't blame all your mistakes on the fact that the customer booked their table too early in the week.

Great beer though and a fantastic selection. Had a taste of all the ales and they tasted wonderful!
