Have you tried our new Owlers IPA yet?
This beer is inspired by Dorset's early smugglers, or "owlers" - it's a new take on US West Coast style beers with a beautiful hop character, bursting with citrus hop aromas and delivering a complex hop-charged taste.

As the winter season draws on, our menu changes to feature warming comfort dishes like our new Mushroom, Chestnut and Shallot Pie or Stargazy Pie, but you’ll find our popular classics are still around; the Golden Glory Beer-Battered Fish and Chips (pictured) goes nicely with a pint of Badger!

Walked in with no booking after visiting Wakehurst Place (a mile away). Seated immediately, staff friendly and polite. Lovely, well-kept building, good atmosphere - tables not too close together, nice buzz but not sitting on top of your neighbours. Food a tiny bit pricey but exceedingly good - well worth paying the extra for. Will go again, definitely recommend.

User

The food is traditional pub grub with an edge but what makes the difference is the staff. Truly welcoming, polite, helpful and a credit to the landlord (never met him/her though).

Sunday lunch is the bomb. Book or eat somewhere less impressive.

User

Stopped here yesterday late afternoon for a quick bite before the 'Glow Wild' event at Wakehurst Place. Great service, good value, delicious food. We will be back again for lunch when we next visit Wakehurst Place.

User

Our second time here. Sat by the fire with a glass of wine as we arrived early. Charming, friendly staff. Wonderful menu to choose from. I had the sirloin of beef, I hate fat so asked for all to be removed which was not an issue for them. When it arrived I had three good slices of perfectly cooked, tender meat. The Yorkshire and potatoes were as good as a home cooked meal. We will definitely be returning again.

User

Lovely impromptu lunch yesterday (drove down from SE London with my husband). 2 courses each and we then shared a cheese board with a great Somerset Capricorn goats cheese, Yarg and a Blue Vinny, 2 pints of Badgers, 2 Hendricks Gins, a glass of Merlot, 2 macchiato £79 - excellent food and brilliant staff...

I went here today with 2 friends and my children. It was a lovely atmosphere clean tidy and very welcoming. The outside area was lovely but chose to stay indoors.

The service was amazing, and our order went in and we got drinks and food very quickly.

Food was outstanding and the lovely gentleman that served us was very kind and helpful.

Will definitely be going back for drinks and food soon.

User

I was there yesterday for my birthday lunch, the food was amazing and the staff lovely, even brought a dessert with a candle in for me, a lovely touch, beautiful pub, really worth a visit,

User

Had an amazing Roast Beef Lunch today! One of the best ever! Lovely staff made us feel welcome! Beautiful Pub & just enjoyed every minute there! Definitely be going back!

User

Great fish fingers butty. Great service. Was too full for pudding so will have to come again.

User

Friendly and attentive staff and the two meals we had were fantastic 👌

User

Excellent food. beautifully cooked and presented. Good range of choices and some very nice sounding specials. Would recommend it. Pity its an hours drive away for us.

User

Excellent food in generous portions. Very dog friendly. Staff were very pleasant and accommodating despite it been very busy. Obviously a popular place.

User

Called in after visiting Paws in the park. Had a lovely vegan lunch. Pleasantly surprised to see the vegan options. Lovely setting. Will visit again.

User

Very nice decor & comfy chairs expensive but nice food. Lovely for a treat. It was my birthday when we went there.

User

Phoned to book but was told they had no availability, we thought we would chance it after walking through the Reservoir. Luckily they could seat us but it looked very empty?? Anyway, service was really good to begin with very pleasant staff.. throughout the meal this deteriorated so I do believe some staff better than others, the guy who brought us the desert menu forgot to mention the specials with a much better choice. The food was really good (Sunday roast) and was ready very quickly! I would go back.

User

Enjoyable with very good staff and excellent beer. Food was ok but nothing special. My burger wasn’t very hot but tasted ok. Tried the chicken pie - a bit bland. But ok. Good surroundings though.

User

We used to eat here regularly, as a caterer it was a nice close place to eat on a Sunday afternoon after a tiring weekend. The last two occasions it’s gone really down hill. A while ago I had a fish pie which was watery and flavourless with hard little lumps of fish and I vowed not to go again. Today with hungry children and tired from a busy weekend we thought we’d pop in. Halloumi shared by the children was dull, 3 deep fried pieces for £6.50. Prawns shared by my husband and I was ££12.50 for 3 prawns each and lacked flavour, the sour dough bread with it was stale. Three of us had burgers, no longer the nice chunky bacon, over cooked re heated strips, dry crumbly burgers and a really stale bun. Skinny fries cooked in oil that needed changing. £13.50 and no side salad or garnish. Massively overpriced for stale very average food. Staff were lovely and the extra star is for them. Food would be 1 star. Massively overpriced and very very poor. Despite you being conveniently on my doorstep I won’t be returning no matter how tired. I strive hard to provide excellent, locally sourced food at prices that reflect that but still offer good value. You would do well to give this a try too.

User

So disappointed with our visit yesterday. I've been here numerous times before but very poor on this occasion. We were allowed to book a table for 14:30 but on our arrival we were rushed to make our order in 10 mins because the kitchen was closing. Our table, for some reason, was surrounded by flies and wasps. The food was greatly overpriced for what was presented. £16 for a crab & lobster burger which was two small fishcakes in a bun. Placed on a plate and paper, served with fries. Unfortunately looked more like a children's meal from a motorway service station. Certainly not worth that price !! All in all it felt like we got the end of everybody's shift and they just wanted to go home. Another meal, steak, which was requested to be cooked as a medium came out swimming in blood and was left half eaten.

Greatly disappointed as we were eating with invited guests and we will be formally complaining. I'm hoping this was just a glitch as I use the Gardeners Arms for business and pleasure but I will never go back if this happens again.

User

Choose to come here for my sons 7th birthday. Was very disappointed with my food. I’m a chef and caterer but that doesn’t mean I’m extra critical. I respect all food. And praise good food when it’s good ! Everyone else on the table of around 10 had great food i must say but mine was not. About £20 for the steak I ordered. Chips cold unseasoned not fresh hot and crispy. Boring salad liturally some leaves and a couple of cherry tomatoes and a very boring steak. Good quality meat but cold and no passion in its cooking ie char lines. So that was it. Over £20 steak bad chips and a boring salad. For £20 was expecting it to be good. Would be nice to have a mushroom tomatoes or onion ring. Staff very very good. Friendly and attentive. Sort the chef that wrote the steak menu and the one that plated it. Chips need to be fantastic in a pub. These were a very bad one.
