New Year – Better You
Many of us make resolutions for the New Year, with detox and weight loss often being at the top of the list. During the festive period it is easy to over-indulgence by over-eating the ‘bad’ foods, and drinking too much alcohol. Even in this short period of time it is easy to gain weight and put stress on the liver.
... This is where The Herbalist can help.
A body detox can help dispel the build-up of toxins in our bodies, cleansing and strengthening the liver and other vital organs. This period of prolonged self-indulgence can affect your health, therefore it is important to re-establish body equilibrium.
We can also help with your weight loss goals through the application of Traditional Chinese Medicine therapies. Detox doesn’t mean weight loss, however a natural side-effect of detox is weight loss and with the introduction of therapies such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, and dietary advice we can help you to shed the extra pounds gained during the festive period.
So what can we do to help?
We recommend booking a consultation with our Traditional Chinese Medicine specialists for an assessment to establish your body condition and personal needs. This will help us to devise a treatment plan that works best for you.
The most common treatment may include:
• Professional Consultation • Acupuncture • Acupressure Massage • Cupping Therapy • Reflexology • Prescription Herbal Tonic • Over-the-Counter products
If you would like to book an appointment or more details about how we can help you, and for information on our full range of services, please do not hesitate to contact us, check out our website or visit us in-store.
From everyone at The Herbalist, we wish you a very Happy New Year.

Looking for a no-fuss way to stay healthy all year round?
Turmeric is a yellow-orange root culinary spice that is widely used in Indian cuisine and other tasty dishes which also has fantastic health benefits and healing properties.
Turmeric is an incredible spice which historically has been burned to relieve congestion and turned into a paste to help heal skin conditions. Turmeric’s vibrant colour comes from curcumin, which is packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory p...roperties.
Curcumin is known to target and attack cancer cells and protect healthy cells from cancer-causing agents. Turmeric can also help reduce cholesterol, aid in digestive function, and aid in the prevention of heart disease. Turmeric may even decrease and block the formation of beta-amyloid and other markers in the brain that can lead to Alzheimer’s disease.
Turmeric has a somewhat bitter and peppery taste, but this marvellous root can improve the function of your Stomach and Spleen. Traditional Chinese Medicine believes that warming foods such as turmeric help to heal and nourish the body, keeping your organs and entire system functioning properly.
This time of year it is even more important to nourish your body and protect it from external pathogens that may cause illness and a popular and delicious way to introduce turmeric into your diet couldn’t be simpler than a nice warming cup of tea.
There are a multitude of different options available in the supermarket, many with interesting flavour combinations to cut through the slight bitterness of the root, however making your own couldn’t be simpler.
Ingredients
1 stick of cinnamon 3 cloves Pinch of nutmeg 3 slices of fresh ginger Pinch of black pepper 6 slices of fresh turmeric (or) 3 teaspoons of ground turmeric 500ml of water Raw honey to sweeten Hot Coconut or Almond milk
Method
1. Mix all of the herbs together and add to the water, bring to the boil and then simmer for 10 minutes. 2. Strain the liquid, removing the herbs. 3. While still hot, add the honey and your hot milk alternative. 4. Enjoy the warmth!

Pressure Point Identification, putting your best foot forward!
If you are feeling cranky, irritable or stressed, then we have a simple tip for you to try at home, at work, or anywhere else for that matter.
Located on the dorsum of the foot in a depression distal between your first and second metatarsal bones (your big and second toe) is a very important pressure point. This point in Traditional Chinese Medicine is called Tai Chong, however it is commonly known as Liver 3.
... This point is by far the best point for calming emotions related to anger and irritability. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the liver is largely responsible for the regulation of emotions, the promotion of digestion and absorption, the maintenance of the circulation of Qi, blood, reproductive functions and our body fluids.
When energy stagnates in the liver meridian, it is finally released with force, like a big bang which can lead to symptoms such as irritability, anger, twitching eyes, PMS, IBS, headaches and migraines.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine the liver has several functions. • The liver stores blood • The blood from the liver regulates women’s menstruation • Regulates the smooth and steady flow of Qi. • Ensures a stable flow of emotions • The liver controls the sinews.
If you are suffering from any of the following; menstrual cramps, painful periods, endometriosis, nausea, stress, irritability, headaches or migraines, we would strongly suggest you press on Liver 3.
Run your fingers along your foot until you find the depression between your first two toes, and press down firmly until you feel a sensation. Repeat this process several times, about 10 times is enough.
So the next time you feel a little less than yourself, try this simple step for yourself, and see how you can improve your day with Traditional Chinese Medicine!

Traditional Chinese Medicine Terminology of the Six Toxins. 1/6
Are you a little bit Damp today?
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine dampness comes from excessive moisture that has not been expelled from the body. It is associated with a weak Spleen, and often with weak Kidneys and diminished Lung function.
... In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) the Spleen is associated with the digestive system and is responsible for converting food to nourish and support our bodies. This process is called ‘transportation and transformation’. The stronger your Spleen function is the better your body will be able to extract nourishment from any food.
Damp will combine with heat or cold to cause damp-heat or damp-cold. Symptoms include feeling of heaviness, puffiness of the skin, swelling or water retention, distended abdomen phlegm discharge, nodular masses, loose bowels, and other symptoms. If you experience any of these symptoms it may be a sign you have too much damp in your body.
Food is a major factor in causing dampness; those which increase it in our bodies include: • Dairy – milk, cheese, yogurts, ice cream • Wheat – breads, pastry’s, biscuits, all yeast products • Pork & rich meat • Processed foods, sugar & sweeteners • Concentrated juice’s especially orange • Saturated fats • Alcohol • Tobacco
Some people are more susceptible to damp than others, a tendency towards dampness can be aggravated by living in damp conditions and places or by a sedentary lifestyle causing an unbalanced internal energy called Qi. People with too much Yang energy and too little Yin energy will typically have dampness.
What can The Herbalist do to help? • Professional Consultation • Acupuncture • Cupping • Prescription Herbal Tonic • Acupressure • Reflexology and other therapies.
The Herbalist offers professional treatment services to restore your body balance, and if you seek our help to take treatment, adjust your diet, and complete a little exercise every day you can reduce the levels of damp in your body, and dramatically transform your state of well-being.
