Its been years since we last visited The Hillside and we are delighted to have called by late afternoon on a Sunday after a very busy day out, lucky for us the roast was still available and did not disappoint, the food was served immediately, huge portions of real home cooking with fresh vegetables.

We were so pleased we returned tuesday after an afternoon visiting relatives in hospital. This time we selected 3 different meals off the menu and they and the desserts were lovely too.

At last good wholesome home cooking we will definately be returning very soon.

User

We went on a Sunday night and had a great meal. The service was good.

I could not fault it

User

Had a starter as a snack and drink on Saturday blackened blue chees dip was lovely. On Sunday we were back again with friends, 2 x lamb shanks, 1 x veggie roast, 1 x crispy duck salad. All plates cleared. Oh and the sharing desert platter is just Yummy! Will be back soon. Thanks

User

Came here for our 5th anniversary , we were not disappointed . Food was good the waitress was very friendly and attentive. Man behind the bar was bit abrupt when I asked where the toilets were. But all in all we had a nice evening .

User

Nice atmosphere and friendly staff but sadly the food is not of a high standard. Our Margarita pizza only 1 1/2 cherry tomatoes on the top and no basil as the menu stated. It is a great shame as this is a great location for a pub and could with the right management be stunning. Have seen this place change over the years and sadly it is going in the wrong direction

I visited yesterday for my birthday with my family. The waitress was pleasent enough, but could have made an effort to smile and make us feel welcome. I ordered a pint which was flat. Didn't bother to complain however, which in hindsight wish I had.

My son ordered from the kids menu (he's 3), and wanted the Salmon only to be told a few minutes later they don't have any. My wife ordered the lamb, again to be told that's off the menu too. My meal was adequate (chicken and thyme pie), however the vegetables were rather plain and lacked flavour. For dessert there was no creme brûlée either so we didn't bother to order anything else. Shame so many items we fancied were not on the menu

User

Have been to this pub on numerous occasions.

However was not impressed this time round.

I felt it was different people again running it .

I had fish & chips. As it wasn't very nice. I was expecting a nice battered fish . Instead it was a sad shaped fish from a packet & i think not fully cooked either . As had repercussions later in the day.

The food served around didn't look like it was what I call all freshly prepped. Especially for the price. It wasn't cheap either.

Wont be rushing back that's for sure.

There are much better places to eat .

Had to chase for too many things tonight....we were out with our just turned 7 year old so booked a 5.30pm table. We were I believe the only ones eating at that time. Firstly we were given all adult menus so had to ask for a children’s, then had to ask for the all important crayons. Food was ordered quickly and arrived in good time but after that we didn’t see our server again. Had to go round the tables myself to find a salt that worked. After a wait I went and grabbed a dessert menu, then had to grab another server to take our dessert choices and get our plates cleared. Then we were left again so ended up putting my coat on before we were offered the bill. After all this we finally left at 7.15pm having had only two courses. The ladies were helpful when we saw them but felt we had been forgotten at times. Had we been a couple on a night out then none of this would have bothered us much, but when you have a child in tow it’s frustrating for everything to take so long. We really didn’t enjoy our evening as in the end we just needed to get home.

User

Came in Saturday, food was ok, service was ok. I would of scored you more but my drinks arrived with plastic straws in them.

Do you bit, you have a duty.

User

Came here yesterday lunch with my dad and we ordered a couple of bottled beers the tall guy behind the bar I'm not sure if he knows how to smile.we ordered 3 starters which was scallops and prawns/mushroom dish and a calamari which was wasn't very hot. I asked the waiter if we could have 2 side plates as we were sharing, he turned up with 2 saucers??? He came back and said theses are the only plates we do.ok I said .

There was nothing whatsoever with the waiting staff to ask if our food was ok?? feed back I would call that..after the meal not one member of staff said thankyou for coming.so that's next to no customer service at the hillside..disappointed

User

The food was cold. We had to wait a while for our waiter to ask if we wanted desert and then I had to ask if it was on its way after another long wait no very impressed with the service at all.

User

Ok Had a platter with a dot of lobster about 5 small prawns and a bit of salad 3 very small slices of bread (and a mean small) and small bit of pate ÂŁ15.00 !!!! expensive and that was for 2 sharing

User

Even though the Hillside is still a great place to meet for a drink, recently the food has been appalling. On a previous visit recently we ordered the Kale, cous cous and cauliflower salad and when it was served there was no kale, cous cous or cauliflower in it. Three pretty key ingredients in that particular dish. It was just a mixed salad at best. Tonight we ordered two of the same salad. After waiting 45mins we were then informed they had no cous cous.....again !! We were offered a Caesar salad instead. After explaining one guest was vegetarian, we were offered a mixed salad with haloumi. The Caesar salad that arrived was barely a salad, consisting of lettuce, a tomato slice and a lump of anchovies. The mixed salad for the vegetarian was exactly the same, but with haloumi cheese. After explaining that the fish and Caesar sauce were not vegetarian they took it back to change. Once everyone else had eaten the replacement salad returned. It was a plate of lettuce with burnt haloumi...... nothing else, just lettuce. There was a time when people would travel for a meal here. Not any more. I won't mention the visit for Sunday lunch when they didn't have veggie gravy and said it was beef stock gravy or nothing.

User

Unfortunately we had a very poor experience on Valentine's Day . Service was poor , food was bad . 4 out of 7 starters were not available on the set menu that we booked a week previously . Will not be visiting again and will warn anyone I know to avoid and eat elsewhere .

User

Really dissapointed, we used to love it here, had the roast dinner, dinner wasn't hot, so the 2nd dinner came and the potatoes were boiled and not cooked, Yorkshire pud wasn't cooked, and because there were no parsnips left, we were told there would be extra veg, but I couldn't see any extra veg on our plates! We spoke to the manager, who was very nice, the 3rd dinner came, was pipping hot, lots of veg, but the Yorkshire pud and potatoes still weren't cooked enough, but were edable. We paid for our drinks, and were given the dinners. We gave the waitress a tip, think she'd had a bad day, there were others who weren't too happy.

User

Ordered a burger without the burger relish. Waitress said it comes on a pot on the side. I said I still don’t want it. Burger comes out with mayonnaise underneath I said to the waitress can I have a bun without the mayonnaise please (it was only on the bun). Server: you didn’t ask for it without mayonnaise you asked for it without burger sauce. Me: I didn’t know it came with mayonnaise otherwise I would of done, it doesn’t say it comes with mayo on the menu and you’ve still given me the burger relish. Her: I said it came in a pot. She took it away and came back with a completely different burger??? And said I have checked with the chef and he said it should come with mayonnaise next time you order it can you make sure you order it without first?!?

Next time I do visit (which will be never) I must remember my crystal ball to make sure I ask for something to be removed which I didn’t know I was getting in the first place!!!!

User

Disgusted by the service we've received today on mother's day we booked a table for mothers day, arrived slightly early as thought we would wait in the bar area but there is no seating spare, so had to stand at the bar with three children then to find there is a set menu and u can only have that 3 courses for ÂŁ21 which we didn't want so had to cancel the table, pay for our drink and wait standing at the bar to have our drinks before leaving.

The food was cold. We had to wait a while for our waiter to ask if we wanted desert and then I had to ask if it was on its way after another long wait no very impressed with the service at all.

Unfortunately we had a very poor experience on Valentine's Day . Service was poor , food was bad . 4 out of 7 starters were not available on the set menu that we booked a week previously . Will not be visiting again and will warn anyone I know to avoid and eat elsewhere .
