First Aid for Equine Eyes!
The horse’s eye is a vulnerable and sensitive structure and its prominence in the head predisposes it to a variety of disease processes.
One of the main difficulties in diagnosing the wide variety of problems seen in the horses’ eye is the pain, which prevents a proper examination without the aid of drugs. Pain represents itself in a very similar fashion despite the range of different conditions – swollen eyelids, squinting, crying and light sensiti...vity are regularly seen. The outlook for the future sight and comfort of the sore eye depends on the right treatment being instigated for the particular condition. Therefore, a thorough examination is clearly necessary to achieve the correct diagnosis before prescribing treatments.
Some treatments may help one condition, whilst causing another to deteriorate. The use of sedation and nerve blocks around the eye may facilitate the correct diagnosis to be made, offering pain relief and safety for your horse during examination.
It is our aim as veterinary surgeons to attempt to achieve, as rapidly as possible, a pain-free and fully sighted eye. The importance of the instigation of the correct treatment is therefore paramount in achieving this aim and an early examination of any ‘sore eye’ is strongly advised – never just assume that a swollen eye is due to flies!

We are thrilled to see this photo of one of our nurses Heidi competing on her horse Bea last weekend, at the Munstead 90cm Hunter Trial.
Bea went lame two years ago and underwent an MRI at Liphook Equine Hospital. The MRI showed inflammatory and structural changes within the navicular bone and effusion of the distal interphalangeal joint.
Bea had to have a year of rest in the field, whilst continuing to see our vets and farrier Richard Lovejoy. Richard shod her with leverag...e reduction aluminium shoes, with a wedged pad and shock absorbing sole pack, which resulted in making her sound.
The MRI image shows a distal border fragment of the navicular bone.
Great to see you back on board Heidi!

We would like to introduce to you Iain Brunt BVetMed MRCVS, who has joined the house vet team.
Iain graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in 2017 and has since been working in mixed practice whilst also doing charity work, in Namibia. He has a particular interest in equine internal medicine, and in his spare time he enjoys running, climbing and enjoying the great outdoors.
This means we have to say a sad farewell to Ellen Heddle, who leaves us this Friday. We wish Ell...en the very best in her future position.
We currently employ 4 house vets who stay with us for 18 months. Their main responsibility is to look after the veterinary needs of all of our in-patients. Their prime duties are emergency assessment, anaesthesia, intensive care monitoring and the day to day management of the 50 hospitalised in-patients, including both diagnostic procedures and treatments.

Today is officially the first day of Spring!
Winter seems to have been never ending, but as it finally draws to a close we can start to pack away our horse’s winter rugs and attire and dust off our riding boots. As we look forward to longer/warmer days, spring can also bring worry for many horse owners. Which is why we have put together this video on ‘Spring Health Preparations’ to help you ‘Spring Into Action!’.
Turn up the volume!

After yesterday's post on worming, we thought we would share with you some images which were taken recently from a microscope, in our laboratory. They show Stronglye eggs, in an equine faecal sample.

User

Excessive worming within the horse population has led to a growing resistance problem. This has manifested with some wormers only having a 10% efficacy in most horses in the UK. It is therefore essential that the problem is tackled and the first step is to start intelligent targeted worming by collecting faeces for a worm egg count.
Whether to treat or not can then be discussed with your veterinary surgeon hopefully leading to a reduction in the risk of resistance, damage to... the environment but also saving money in the long term.
With intelligent targeted worming most owners can dramatically reduce their wormer use throughout the year.
So, if you are thinking of worming your horse then STOP, collect a ball of faeces and have it assessed. Hopefully your horse will be one of the 80-90% of horses that don't need worming regularly.

Only 5 days to go until its officially Spring!
With winter nearly over and spring in the air we are starting to think about bringing our horses back in to work. Many of us are unable to ride over the winter months due to the dark evenings and no access to an indoor school or floodlit outdoor school.
Before you get started with exercising your horse, check your tack as your horse is quite likely to have lost muscle and their shape may have changed. Make sure they are also soun...d and ready to ride.
Whether you ride for pleasure or competition, it is always beneficial to have a well-designed exercise program to work towards. Do not rush! If you do too much too soon your horse is more likely to sustain an injury.
Start off slowly by beginning to hack (or lunge if you need to). Do lots of walking to strengthen muscles, ligaments and exercise tendons, joints and bones, then gradually increase the distance, speed and workload. Balancing hacking and schooling within the exercise program aims to strengthen all these areas. More training and gradual building of the exercise regime will decrease the chance of injury.

Stacey is a young Show Jumper mare who came to us in July last year from her home in Guernsey. Following a fall through a small showjump during a schooling session, she had become immediately severely lame on her right fore. Stacey was initially unable to straighten her knee or bear weight on the limb and an unusual swelling developed along the back of the leg. X-rays of the commonly injured areas did not reveal any signs of a fracture and once Stacey was comfortable enough t...o travel safely, she made the ferry and road trip to Liphook.
Stacey was seen by Rachel Tucker, one of the specialist surgeons in the hospital. Rachel examined Stacey, carefully palpating the leg for abnormalities such as swellings or areas of pain. X-rays were taken to evaluate the bony structures of the limb and ultrasound was used to examine the soft tissues. These revealed Stacey to have suffered an avulsion injury of the origin of the ulnaris lateralis muscle. This muscle runs from the end of the humerus to the cannon bone and functions to help straighten the knee joints (carpus). A small piece of bone at the muscle’s attachment to the humerus had pulled away, affecting the function of the muscle and causing pain and lameness. This bone fragment is visible on x-ray and ultrasound images on the lateral aspect of the leg, close to the elbow joint.
Stacey underwent 6 months of rest and careful rehabilitation and healing was monitored closely during this time. The video shows Stacey who is sound and back in work. Last weekend she went to a BS Rally after 8 months, and went and won her class.
We are delighted to see how much she is enjoying her jumping again!

We have just purchased a life saving defibrillator to be based at the hospital.
Over the last few weeks some of our staff have received training for CPR and how to use a defibrillator.
We really hope we never have to use it!

Wishing a big congratulations to Tim Adams on completing the Hong Kong Marathon last weekend.
Whilst Tim was out there he also got to attend the Longines Masters Show Jumping, and got to take a look behind the scenes.

User

Would like to thank Racheal, Sarah and suzie for all helping with the diagnosis and treatment of Troy. All the nurses that helped care for him whilst he visited, the reception team and all the other staff at Liphook are very polite, friendly and give the best service they possibly can. Liphook is highly recommended from me every time

User

These guys are amazing they don’t just take great care of your horse or pony but they will look after you as a person, they are always there even if it was just for advice, I would like to thank Tim for all that he has done for my ponies, I would highly recommend them and personally would not go any where else!

User

Thank you thank you thank you Holly. What a wonderful Vet and kind soul you were to both Feebee and us this evening. A HUGE thank you to Holly and liphook equine hospital who were with us so quickly this evening when we found our beautiful Feebee so unwell. For a short time as we sat holding her head as she layed flat out breathing heavily and uninterested in life we thought we were loosing her but thanks to Holly who quickly assesed her and kicked into action treating her, she is now up and about and picking at some hay with ears forward and shiny (albeit tired eyes!). Hopefully tomorrow our cheeky sassy little pony will be back.

Thank you for looking after my boy Star Catcher so well, I missed him but knew he was in the best hands, you are all so welcoming and understanding and took care of me and my horse when we arrived. I can't thank you all enough, every single one of you

User

Thank you Freya for coming so quickly and your patience and the calm way you treated our beautiful little girl, This morning she was bright and even wanted to go out so very different from the evening before.

We will see you again on Tuesday. Thank you

My mare has just had her 2nd stay/procedure at Liphook. I can't recommend them enough.

Every single member of the team from the vets, nurses, reception team all of them were absolutely fantastic.

Can't thank them enough for all their time and effort. Highly recommended.

My horse is currently a patient at Liphook undergoing treatment. He has been there just under a week. The team have been amazing especially Tom for his great work in surgery and Alice for her care and daily calls updating me on Sunny's progress. All of the staff from reception to the nurses and other yard staff have been fantastic. Sunny has been looked after really well and so have I, the neurotic owner!

Thank you, really appreciate your knowledge, experience and care.

User

My heartfelt thanks to all at Liphook for taking such good care of Riley, who came home today after a week in the care of the ICU team. In particular to David, Katherine, Tori and Jo who took every opportunity to explain in great detail his diagnosis, progress and treatment, and to the nurses who looked after his day to day needs. Every time I visited someone was attending to him and keeping him company, and he in turn seemed to provide endless amusement - not least of all with his name! He's delighted to be home and is now going to enjoy a well earned month of R&R! Thanks LEH - so lucky to have you down the road.

User

Liphook have been looking after my horses for 10years now and always done a fantastic job. Just recently had the misfortune of my best horse needing emergency surgery but everything went brilliantly and he is now fully recovered and back in full work.

User

Just Wow, starting from your booking in staff to the receptionist, all your staff are friendly yet professional. My horse was well looked after nothing was too much bother.

It made the whole experience of her being away from home so much easier.

Big thank you to Jane and Siobhan for all your hard work.

User

I wanted to say a huge thank you to The Liphook Equine Hospital, and especially Huw Griffiths and Tom Hughes.

My mare has certainly run them through their paces with kissing spine, gastric ulcers, and a mystery hind leg lameness. The vets have been fantastic throughout patiently answering all of my (many) questions and providing thorough information and support.

Since leaving LEH (relocated due to work ) I have received numerous compliments about how well my horse has responded to her kissing spine surgery and how tidy the incision site is - your work has been admired across the south coast now!

So a big thank you to Huw Griffiths again from Callie and I - Callie is back in one piece and we're now regularly out exploring the Suffolk countryside and hope to be competing soon!

User

I can’t praise the whole team at Liphook enough. My mare needed a colic op late one Saturday evening. We were miles away from home, and I was on my own. The surgeon Tom was so patient and took time both before and after the operation (when I’m sure he just wanted to get home..!) to explain everything to me and answer all my questions. I had to head back up North the following day, but Lorna was absolutely lovely and called me every day with an update as to her progress and I was confident about leaving her in such expert hands.

User

Haseeb stayed with our horse and made him comfortable until the end today. I cannot tell you how grateful we are to you all, he was a wonderful horse and 25 years old - we were thankful that from spotting the colic to his last heartbeat he had the most professional care possible.

User

From the pilots to the grunts, even accounts! Can't thank everyone enough for the care and attention given to Tia over the last week at your hospital. Made me feel so relaxed and comfortable. No matter what time it is someone is always there to reassure you and explain things. It's never too much bother for them to talk to you. Thanx Tom and Shelley and everybody else there again. She looks a lot better than she did a week ago. Hope the slimmers club isn't any extra.

Could not ask for a better care for my little pony. He was a bit of a unusual case where his eye ulcer just wouldn't help itself. Surgery was the last option before removal and after lengthy chats, Rocky went through a tough operation. The care for him from start to finish was outstanding. Jamie, the vet, was superb and David, the surgeon, words do not describe his work, unreal and amazing! Every yard staff member and nurse i met were polite, friendly and clearly cared for all the horses and ponies there!

Rocky is now home and I have everything crossed his eye operation will be successful beating the eye ulcer and we can get back to what we love!

User

Cannot thank everyone at the Liphook Equine Hospital enough for all the incredible work they have done on countless occasions (unfortunately) with my horses over the years. Especially Tim Adams for his patient and kind manner, even when my horse decides not to behave! As well as not giving up and bringing my gelding right again, despite another vet had advised there was no hope!

User

Cannot recommend the team at Liphook enough. My mare has been unfortunate enough to have to have two surgeries in the space of just over a month. They handled her emergency colic so well and made her as comfortable as possible. Then a few weeks later she had to come in for scans and X-rays which showed she needed surgery as she has tore her cruciate ligament. They have been so helpful and have saved my ponies life twice! The facilities on the site are amazing too and I Would 100% recommend them and also use them again

Brilliant service yesterday and vets/nurses went over and above what is expected when my friends horse decided to protest about travelling alone and went over the breast bar just as we were pulling away. We cannot thank them enough for getting to us and getting Rufus out so quickly as we literally took the trailer apart with him in it thrashing around

After calming him (& us) he then refused to load despite help and we went back today with his friend and he practically ran on . Definitely not scared of trailer or travelling, just an idiot!!! Once again THANK YOU

User

Absolutely would recommend! Jamie was extremely helpful and brilliant at keeping me informed, the service made me feel completely at ease and knew that my boy was in the right place! The care given to him was second to none and I think he was a little bit disappointed to come home! Hopefully not disappointed enough for another visit ;) Thank you to all that cared for Rex whilst he was there!
