Went to the merchant house at lunchtime today for the first time with my husband and 11 month old son. Really nice atmosphere, child friendly, amazing food and if you like really ale, then you are in the right place.

We went for some food tonight and it was absolutely delicious! Thoroughly recommend the vegan hot dog and fried cauliflower. Yet again the staff were all lovely and friendly. So happy this is at the end of my road, lucky me!

Situated in a lovely part of Southsea. Great ambience, amazing and friendly staff and great food at reasonable prices. The vegan slaw was amazing as was the vegan house dog! Really good non-vegetarian food too. Would highly recommend! 5*!

Really hard work has gone into making this a bespoke parlour for discerning drinkers. Very nice beer and decent Southsea vibe about it. Should be a huge success.

Made a special journey today to try the food. Food was sublime!!!! I would definitely recommend people to come here, well worth a visit. XxX

I'm all about the beer, so any bar with Deya & Verdant on tap is a winner with me.. the trick is balancing this with a bar that my fiancée is happy to drink in, which The Merchant House pulls off. Good selection of non beer drinks, cosy decor and awesome staff, we will be back!

Brilliant bar, friendly clean with a great atmosphere serving good wine and beer. Great place to meet friends and enjoy the evening.

It's a great vibe, atmosphere etc, the only thing that let's it down is the vaping. Good on you for not smoking but sharing the sickly sweet clouds is not great and the only reason that not given the extra star.

Great new place...excellent choice of beers from all over the place...great friendly staff...good food too. Just need some softer furnishings to dampen the 'echo' effect in the place! (The wife's suggestion!)

Great beer choice, bar area needs some tables removed as there’s not enough places to stand/lean and drink, especially when it’s busy. Also suffers from problem a lot of recently done up places have, flat wood floor, flat hard walls, flat hard ceiling - loads of echo which means everyone trying to talk over the reflected sound which makes it worse. Needs a few soft items in the room to baffle the echoes down.

‘Official’ opening night was pleasingly packed so I hope the support continues. The “feel” of the place is ‘micro-pub’, as is the decor and furnishings but that’s where the similarity ends. A bar stocked like a pub, plenty of staff serving, ample seating (once the novelty dies down) is as far from most micros as you get. I feel this is going to appeal more as it caters for a broader range of drinker’s needs. Alas, it’s likely to be a victim of its own success - as with micros - tall ceilings, hard surfaces & simply nothing to soak up noise means the acoustics are terrible so holding a conversation anymore than directly opposite the table is impossible. Ideal for rowing couples. 3*.

Unfortunately, incredibly loud as no soft furnishings. Struggled to hear the person next to me. Was a Friday night, so expect a good ‘buzz’, but unfortunately the noise was so off putting it was enough to send us down the road for our next pint! Maybe less loud during the week.
